I agree that is what i was trying to say in my earlier post, most of the users in this forum who are active have been in the arg's from the beginning, myself included... I cant see any of us who are actively participating renegging and taking the money for ourselves. It truly is a game and should be played as such. And the person's name would be up in lights anyway, because we would all know who won when it's said and done anyway. I just dont think there is a need for an outside group.

I think that anyone who does solve this using information from these forums would donate the winnings to unfiction.

It's the least we can do for this site.

People are scum, though. I can understand the concern. There could easily be a lurker who hides in the wings - we wouldn't even know who it was.

But at the risk of overstepping my boundaries as an utter ARG noob, I think those of us who truly believe in the collaborative aspect are just going to have to do what we do and hope nobody screws us.

To a degree, I agree with both sides here. Yes, Unfiction itself is designed and operates as a community that solves such things together, and thus to cast it aside and use other means, more secretive means, of solving such a puzzle is in itself defeating the purpose of Unfiction.

But on the other hand, the possibility of someone just lurking and waiting for a decent enough answer is very likely. And thus, since the idea of the group is to further the information and attempts at solving the puzzle, in hopes of ensuring the prize money is donated properly to Unfiction (or the ARG community in general), it may be best if we feed slightly off of the competitive nature of this particular puzzle and seperate from the public. That way, the group that does so can keep tabs on its members. If they are not making a true effort in the solving of the puzzle, then the group would be able to make note of that. Unfiction is so large, and open to the public beside, that we would never know of such a person here.

I would say to keep the end of the I Love Bees in mind. While the combat training missions were only mentioned and intended for those that had been participating in the ARG, it was through a public format. And so, other Halo 2 fans heard the rumor, stopped by the website, got the information they needed, and cashed in on the event, while others that fully deserved such a chance were left out.

Guys, remember-- these PMs aren't stupid. They're probably monitoring all the active forums constantly and due credit will be given where it belongs.

verdict?

If it isn't clear from my posts, I am not in favor of a private group to do this. It is contrary to the collaborative process of unfiction.

Still, I respect whatever choice anyone else makes. At the end of the day it is up to the individual who solves the puzzle to determine where they want to post the solution.

I know I'm a newbie here and all... but I intend to think aloud throughout. Sometimes I'll be full of hooey, I'll warn you that right now, but that is mitigated somewhat by some good ideas I will toss out there. I think I had some good angles on the connection between 1 & 2, but obviously since it has been solved by others, I am not alone in that. I need no feathers, I have no cap!

But if I figured it out for myself, I would certainly and unabashedly share immediately with the world so that we can all attack level 3 more uniformly as a communal brainpower team. There is always competition in these things, and that may come to roost at the endgame which is always a little up for grabs, but until that moment, I think the interesting part of these boards is the collaborative way people think. Yah, some suggestions are goofball, but even those are intriguing to see the way folks make connections in their minds. So, I'm entirely above board on the game, but not placing myself above the board - if that makes sense. Would I love to solve it all in one fell swoop? You bet. But the journey and the challenge of trying to figure out with each other is the fun.

I think the reason these boards/games linger a bit long and become increasingly niche games for very small core groups of players is sometimes because of this obtrusive obstruction. Once in a while it would be nice for the folks who have solved some levels of the puzzle to gently say, "hey, buddy, you are on a good path there... keep thinking." Or, "Barking up the wrong tree there, pal. Find a sycamore stand instead." But that is, as they say, just one man's opinion.
