I've found that plasma weapons (pistols, rifles) seem to reduce shields more quickly than their human weapon counterparts. And conversely, human weapons (magnums, smgs) seem to kill faster once said shields are down. Whenever I'm "dancing" with someone dual-wielding a pair of smg's, and I've got a plasma + smg, I'll more often than not, win. Also, an overcharged plasma pistol shot will kill the shields in one shot (even against an overshielded opponent!), so pair that up with a magnum for a follow-up-headshot-2-hit-kill-spectacular! Only thing is, the plasma pistol's shot moves pretty darn slow, so it's best for when you know you'll be getting in close and you'll most likely need to lead your shot.
I've got that habit of jumping in a fight too, but I think it does more harm than good. While you can change directions to some degree, your maneuverability is pretty slow and is very limited in the air. A good sniper will know where you're gonna land. Despite knowing this, or rather despite thinking this, I still can't help hitting the jump button anyways, so what do i know? Confused

EDIT: agh~ i must've skipped page 79 when i wrote this reply, as it's been addressed. Well, at least I get page 80 Razz w00t!

Uh, indeed.

This is true and intended by bungie. Plasma weapons will alwasys reduce sheilds faster than their projectile counterparts, and of course projectile weapons will always reduce health fatser than the plasmas.

Even if the pistol is slow it is a huge advantage one on one, even for small maps. Just charge your pistol, as soon as you are about 2 seconds away, realease the pistol, enemy's sheilds go down, and start shooting with the smg/magnum. At that range your opponent will be dead before your sheilds go down even if he started shooting first. If you are at close range you should still win, even against dual smgs.

Stats in Excel

I don't know if this was posted elsewhere, but Major Nelislon (Microsot Xbox Live head) has a link on his blog to an awesome Excel workbook for downloading and analyzing Halo 2 stats

I can definitly see dumping the competition's stats for heavy analysis before a big match.

I provide this assuming you guys will not download and laugh at my stats (or lack thereof) Embarassed

Now, who loves ya?

This excel file is awesome! It'll be essential if they start to purge old game stats. They already said they will be purging game viewer from old games, but I'm sure they will have to start stats eventually.

Waters makes a good point about the shotguns in close quarters. I'm thinking that you want the shotgun when there are lots of nice, sharp corners. The corners allow you to wait for someone to come in at close range, so you can blast 'em.

I played last night on a LAN game with 6 other people. Two of them are devastatingly good, so we finally split them up. Those two prefer to play on a 2 man team against everyone else, working together and picking off the rest one by one. This is what Rendon and a few others prefer.

I tried out the handicap mode to see what happened. Here's the thing: when I turn on the handicap, I become apparently slower. I move slower, and my hits are slower. When the timing is close on a mutual hit, I lose. When I locked and lunged with the energy sword, my opponent didn't die.

Has anyone else tried out the handicap settings? I know the best players disdain handicaps. RoboGriff just tells me to "get better", but if players are wildly separated on skills, then the game is only fun for the best players. For the players last night, I turned the handicap off. I could see it's use in beekeeper matches, especially with very new or casual players. If I recall, the settings are mild, moderate, and servere. I could see myself with a mild to moderate handicap, and the better players with a severe handicap. After some experimentation, we could have games where any combination of teams would result in close matches.

I played some team slayer matchmaking last night! Apart from getting my ass kicked quite a lot, it was nice to notice that team work is necessary on these matches!

I played by myself and most matches I lost (5-5 record) was against parties of 4 that played very coordinated team work! I got tons of deaths when it was 4x1 or 4x2 close range combat!

The "bad" thing is that most level 1-2 team slayer players are not really level 1-2. They just didn't play before ... So I think I got some matches against level 10-13 guys.

And Clayfoot, what are the handicap settings? Not familiar with those.

I don't think that you can set a handicap in matchmade games. You can, however, set a handicap for split screen and LAN games. What the handicap does is as Clayfoot said, it slows you down, reduces the amount of shield you have, and makes melee less harmful. It may do some other things that I'm not aware of yet.

It makes it really nice for people like Clayfoot played against last night. Makes a challenge for the really good people, and makes things much more fun for the people who aren't otherwise able to kill them.

When you're "in game", press the Start button. One of the menu items is "handicap". You select a value from the list, for how much you want to disadvantage yourself.

There's no point to using handicapping in matched games: Bungie.net is already trying to match you up fairly. When you're playing custom/open games with other beekeepers, it makes more sense. I haven't tried handicapping on XBL, yet. Anyone know if handicapping works in custom games on XBox Live?

My favorite kills with shotgun is after I make a run for the flag, grab it and run away while instantly people start shooting at me. I go to a corner, drop the flag and just wait for the person following me to 1-shot kill them! I know a lot of people do it, but it's just instant pleasure! Wink

About handicap, I'm not sure if we have that much mismatch on most of our custom games to justify this. I do agree that it's not that much fun when you're just getting slaughtered over and over! But when you're playing with the right people, even getting killed is fun! Laughing

You may have typed this sentiment, but I live it. Wink

I think there's something to be said for sucking really badly in a map full of pretty good players. There's an adaptive process that happens, almost without you realizing it, and sure enough, you may eschew grenades, but suddenly the desperate grab for a ghost means you discover that you're good at splattering.

Sometimes just learning how to hide is a skill. Not like I would know about that. I'm just sayin'.

I've gotten better because you all kill me so much, and are so good. I watch and observe you without even thinking about it, and I even start to imitate your gameplay in really subtle ways. Team games really help in this respect, because the impetus is there to help each other already, so it's even easier/more advantageous to tell someone how to improve their game, because it helps the whole team. It's one of my favorite things about capture the flag, really.

Good point.

Maybe use handicaps only for slayer/team slayer matches? I'm afraid this might overcomplicate things! Who's gonna use handicap? At what settings? These kind of things.
