It's also a shame that the Xbox 360 (The prominent rumor name of the Xbox 2) might not have Blu-Ray nor HD-DVD disc formats.

This had better not be true as I don't think people are willing to pay $300+ for a next gen gaming console that runs on the same disc format as the current gen consoles. The PS3 will more than likely follow the Blu-Ray format, as Sony is a big supporter of the Blu-Ray.

Well, if keeping the DVD medium means a higher chance of getting our beloved hard drive back while keeping realistic prices (meaning, lower than $250), then it's all good for me!

Truth is not many xbox games came close to the full DVD capacity! Most are small enough for a single layer DVD.

It'll be interesting to see what's going to be the PS3 price at launch! Sony may lose a lot of money on the console hardware side (like MS on the xbox), just so they can win the Blu-ray vs HD-DVD format! If they look at the big picture (and they usually do), blu-ray drives will come at no extra cost for the final customer! MS better be ready for that!

Personally, having games on multiple discs is not as bad as having no DD capabilities and HDTV resolutions on the Xbox Next (or 360, whatever). Those are key points for me, as a home theater fanatic ...

Didn't Sony INVENT Blu-Ray? I thought they were such a big sponser of it because it was their technology....?

Yep. Just like Betamax was better than VHS, Blu-Ray is "better" HD-DVD. We'll see how it goes! I still curse Sony for creating their proprietary formats, like memory stick and SACD (which sadly has Dark Side of the Moon ...).

Eh, I don't curse them for making them proprietary. Unfortunately they do happen to be slightly better than the competition. Unfortunately they haven't realized that better != winner all the time. If it did, we'd be watching everything on Betamax instead of VHS. (Well, we would have been... who watches VHS now anyway?)

Actually Blu-Ray was developed by a large group of companies, so it will not be proprietary:

Just look at all the formats around .... DVD-R vs DVD+R vs DVD-Ram, MiniDisc, Betamax vs VHS, DVD-Audio vs SACD, CF/SD/Memory Stick ....

This just creates confusion and problems for the final customer! I'd love to get HiDef audio, but a player that supports DVD-Audio and SACD either sucks or it's more than $500!

If you pay attention, Sony is involved on most of these format wars ... I still curse them every night before I go to bed ... Laughing

Sorry for being soooo off-topic! But hey, it's a 128693 page thread anyway ...

As a former employee of Sony, I challenge you to a dual then! Razz

Sony is involved, but it's because they know how to make good products. They're a leading R&D company, and they want to make sure they benefit from their research. Research isn't cheap.

I have no problem with this. It's just that happens too often with Sony ... As I said, final customer always gets screwed because of this. Come on, there's no reason to support memory stick when CF/SD cards are a lot more common and cheaper! And memory stick was limited to 128 (or was it 256?)mb till the pro version came out!

It's just a dual. You'll probably win anyway. Then we can go back to kicking the snot out of others.

Yeah, but I'd rather have the variety as opposed to being locked into a single format. Besides, you didn't have to buy MS products unless you bought Sony. You could have bought any other type of <item> that didn't use Memory Sticks. Then you wouldn't be hampered by the 256Mb limit.

Variety is good when there's enough difference to justify another format! Even DVD-Audio and SACD don't give you a clear difference between them! But memory stick and CF/SD cards are just portable storages! There's just no real reason to have variety here! It's not like one of them has different feature over the other! If I decide to go from a Sony camera to another brand or vice-versa, I have to buy it all over again!

Besides, I also complain about other proprietary formats, like MS releasing the xbox without a plain USB port! That means no force feedback and no real universal Wheel! I would've bought a PC wheel if it would work with the xbox years go! Mad

Tonight I realized that a team slayer game with just brute shots is WAAAAY more fun then it has any right to be.
That's all.

That is something I should consider. I'll plug it into my game types, and we'll playtest later this week.

Moving on ... treating people well is neither expected nor taken for granted on X-Box Live. If you treat your foes with respect in the post-game analysis, they'll generally return in kind. For instance, theBruce and I were playing against a highly-talented group of reds who we summarily stomped upon with all alacrity. In the post-game analysis, theBruce and I treated them well, and they treated us well. Very respectful. Very Awesome.

It's easy to get frustrated and act haughty upon your foe's defeat, but it's important to remain classy.

This Community Morality Announcement is now complete.
Good day.

The rules we used for it were basic team slayer rules-no radar, no powerups, normal shields, grenades, just every weapon on map, and to start with, are brute shots. It's really cool on smaller levels like midship and Battle Creek. Gave me a new found respect for that dumb thing, as well-it's not as useless as I always thought. The game is best played when singing the "American Gladiators" theme, which ended up being what we called the gametype Razz

I usually only talk trash post-match if the other guys were total pricks, otherwise I either just hop out or acknowledge it was fun.

I don't care too much about what format games are on, as long as the games themselves are good. True, 4 GD-ROMS vs the one DVD in the case of Shenmue 2 seems lopsided, but the game was good both ways, so hey, who am I to argue?

And for the other side of that, I watch Beta tapes just about every day. (OK, so it's digibeta)

Jinxie and I were on, and then suddenly, a bunch of people showed up! Bizarro night! I had loads of fun, though.

I've found the DSL in this place really seems to leave me lagging a lot... like, on a red bar when everyone else is on full green. This is not cool. :/
