Even if you do buy them, we can play match-made and custom games with you. Just because you don't have the maps doesn't mean you can't play with us. They're making a new matchmaking playlist that uses the bought maps... that's the only place you won't be able to play with us. Well, except for custom games, but I'm sure if you're around, we aren't gonna just kick ya out to play on the bought maps.

I figure $6 for 2 months of entertainment is better than $8 for 2 hours of entertainment (a movie). Sure, I'm paying for it twice, but I often pay to see a movie in the theatre and then buy the DVD afterward.

I was really going to try to hold off, but your movie analogy was such a perfect example that I happily pay for things twice in the exact same way all the time. Plus...I really want to play them.

I can't wait to play them!! Turf sounds like one of the best, but I'm really looking forward to Sanctuary as well. Containment seems to huge to me! I don't know if I'll like it ... Will see.

Yeah, me too; the ol' movie analogy was a staple of mine going way back... in an arcade, I'd finally think I'd nailed a game if I could play for more than 10 minutes on the same quarter because that was the break point; $2.50 (matinee/Tuesday) for 120 minutes works out to $0.25 for 12. (I know, I know, but you don't buy popcorn at video games so the discrepancy evens out.)

And what the heck, it's not that much money.

-- Steve's going to play those two maps a LOT over the next two months, just to make sure. Wink

Even cheap ass /me is going to break down and buy the maps (even though I don't play enough). I figure:

1. We are all going to die anyway that is such a small amount of money for the untold amount of joy it may bring.

2. I can just skip lunch this week and make up $6 (and let me get home earlier to play on Wed!)

Which reminds me:
Team Training this and every Wed 8pm EST till 10 EST (or bored)

We can play with NEW maps and leave the late adapters out! Twisted Evil

CoffeeJedi, there have been some folks experiencing trouble with the download (it took one poor fellow over on HBO an hour to download the free maps alone) but the great majority have managed download times of 10-20 minutes for all 4 maps combined. It took me just under 10 minutes.

I don't know what causes the speed discrepancy and connectivity issues... I guess to be safe make sure something else isn't trying to monopolize your connection. The maps *are* over 100 MB combined.

-- Steve took a quick tour around them earlier this evening. Gosh, they're purty.

New Maps

The new maps are amazingly well done. The quality of the maps, however, does not guarantee my enjoyment of them.

Because I rarely play with the same set of people every game, let alone have time to practice with them, I find "objective" games like CTF and Assault to be crashing bores. Either I'm stuck on the team that has NO organization, and we all stand around with our thumbs up our butts until the other team wins, or I'm on a team where everyone else has a role but me, and I stand around with my thumb up my butt until my team wins.

Either way, thumbtacular.

Games like slayer, oddball, KOTH, or territories require much less organization and are fun to play with just about anyone.

This leads to my problem. Everyone seems to LOVE Containment, which is a great map, but suitable only for CTF and Assault. I could imagine an 8-on-8 team slayer being fun, but that won't happen often, and never in matchmaking. CTF on Containment will probably end up being every Beekeeper's favorite game but mine.

Turf will be a solid map for just about any game, it's so well-balanced. Let's not overdo the CTF and Assault in Turf, though.

Warlock and Sanctuary are easily the two most beautiful of the bunch, and both are great maps for slayer, oddball and KOTH. I was a big fan of rockets on Wizard, and rockets in Warlock has much the same feel. I just hope it isn't the only game played in Warlock, because that will get dreadfully old in a short time.

I'm looking forward to some solid slayer games in Sanctuary - I'm just afraid I'll have to wait until June for it to show up in the playlists.

The new maps are awesome. I think I want to have Containment's children. Shocked

Fun times. Let's do it again soon, eh?

Further madness on the new maps:

Turf is indeed great for King of the Hill games and Territories. My crew and I did a bunch of custom games I've made on each of the maps (save containment), and Turf is definitely the man for both those games. Give me command sometime and we can all try out "Nunavut Style" and "Tommy Guns" on that map.

We also did an Assault game, single bomb, on Sanctuary. Now that was cool. Vehicles were Spectres, and the bomb was touch return. Add that to a starting combo of SMG and Battle Rifle and you had one intensely crazy game. Another really fun one on that, I liked it.

Warlock is good for many games. We did a custom Oddball game that was absolute madness, American Gladiators which could've benefitted from more players, and a Ghostbusters game, which also could've used the same.

Standard Team Slayer games were great on all these maps. Try playing Turf with no radar to get a truly creepy experience of never knowing where death will come from.

My crew and I will as always be on wednesday night if anyone is interested in joining us. I wants to get some large scale games going on these maps.

I'm kind with you. I do like Containment, but I think it's just too huge for my tastes. I think the flag location is just too close to the teleporter, which makes little sense, since the base is so big! I love CTF and Assault games, but I agree they can become a bit boring when it's on these Huge maps. Part of that is that I suck driving vehicles, so I'm usually on foot. And it's sooo frustrating to walk for 2-3 minutes just to get sniped in the head!

But I gotta say I love Sanctuary and Turf! Turf is a bit small, but it has tons of places to set up traps! And that big gate is just too awesome!

Sanctuary is a lot bigger than Beaver Creek despite what they said. I love the layout and the possibilities. I hope they put this map on the Skirmish and Slayer playlist, even though it's a bit bigger than most maps, but then again, they have Coag on the slayer list! Rolling Eyes

Clayfoot, seriously, you're missing the 2 best new maps, in my opinion ... They're worth it!

Nah, after our game last night, I was unimpressed. The map is just too big, with too few vehicles. It would really benefit from a Ghost and another warthog.

I'm surprised that so many people like it, honestly. To me, it feels a LOT like Coagulation, which everyone seems to hate. It's fairly linear, two bases, teleporters that teleport you outside the base, warthogs & tanks, snipers & rockets... I don't know. Maybe it's just me, but I think it's going to be even more frustrating than Coag. It seems like a map that would be good for 8+ teams... 8 people seem to just barely fill the map, and less than that is gonna suck like nothing else. Can you imagine 6 people teams on Containment? You could go days without seeing anyone else.

I'm sure I'll have many more oppertunities to rant about Containment in the future.

Personally I'm much more a fan of the other 3 maps.

Oh, and Mike, the reason I didn't send you an invite last night was NOT because I don't like you, or ignoring you. It was because the party was at a full 16 people when you sent the invite. And after the game was over, I jumped ship to get to bed. So sorry about that, I don't hate you, I promise.

Edit:

I don't think it's bigger. It's just wider. Beaver creek is longer than Sanctuary, while Sanc. is wider, and is less linear. There are definitely more possibilities on Sanc. than on Beaver Creek, although I think I'm still gonna prefer Beaver Creek over Sanc., at least for the forseeable future. At least until I get used to Sanc., and learn all the ins & outs.
