Got a link, pal? There's no way I am spending more than 30 seconds trawling Gamespot's forums looking for a thread, heh. Smile

There are youtube videos that still exist, but they really don't show anything.

oh, nice.. good christmas present for the troops Razz
I'm reserving praise for Halo 3... mainly because I honestly don't feel that graphically Bungie can outdo Gears of War. For me, Halo 3 is now about plot and gameplay, since the Halo universe spans more than just 3 games, but also books and more. Halo 3 will be special. But Bungie's got a lot of work to go before it will look as good or better than GoW. IMO. I hope I'm wrong though Smile

A couple of the stills do look nice though... the release date can't come soon enough Very Happy

Halo 2 still looks good to me.

For me, it's all about the man cannon jokes.

I do believe that Bungie can meet or exceed the graphics in Gears simply because of the shear manpower at Bungie. Remember Epic only had about 80 people working on Gears for a few years; Bungie has a few hundred working on Halo 3 so it is still feasible.

it's feasible... but manpower is just one aspect; and from an artistic standpoint, I think Epic started off with a 'how real can we make this seem' perspective, while inherently Halo's world is much more 'sci-fi'ish. They may be able to pull off the technical quality that Epic's engine boasts (though I find it unlikely myself), but the environment, colours, characters, gameplay, for me at this point at least, are still in GoW's favour... and I hate to say it, because I absolutely love Halo. I really hope that Bungie is able to pull off an amazing game in every way, to rival even Gears.
I've always felt that video games really are too 'colourful'. The more realistic visual games IMO are ones where the colours are less saturated, and there definitely needs to be HDR (which Bungie's added to Halo 3, thankfully). Even in Xbox's day, I was mightily impressed with Wreckless, because its graphics really showed that a game can visual look realistic (even if it had endless clipping problems Razz). And some of the recent war FPS's have been grittier and visually bland, really helping with the realism. Too much colour can really draw away the realism. Plus, well GoW's environment are littered with 'stuff', so there's much less flat surfaces and ramps all over the places.

Anyway, it's not so much technical quality of the engine being used as it is artistic style, IMO. Epic and Bungie just have two styles, and in the case of GoW and Halo, at this point GoW's style better fits a gritty realism than Halo. But we'll see Smile Hopefully soon they'll start releasing gameplay videos; well, the multiplayer beta opens soon, so that'll suffice =)

Only problem with that-not every war zone is bland and dreary Razz people have fought on bright, sunny, summer days. Lots of color there!

I like to go shopping at the mall!

edited to add: Actually, beyond maybe Midship, most of the Halo 2 multiplayer maps are pretty muted and gritty. There's cracks and fissures and deteriorated machinery and all sorts of detritus - crates and rocks, armories, skids, etc.

I suppose the sandstone orangey tone of maps like Coagulation or Foundation or Headlong might seem more colorful, but after all, it is a clear and sunny day/early evening out when you're there.

(oh, the image, if it's not loading, is just a thumbnail of Ivory Tower.)

Yeah, but I think that the Bruce is right in that Halo has a lot going against it in that it's just easier to make a grimy street corner realistic than it is a beautiful alien world. Seriously, how do you cover up those razor-sharp corners and perfectly flat roadways when there's nothing but forest and beach (and covert military base) for miles? Grit is certainly an easy way out in terms of realism, but it seems to be working out for Epic quite well, and it would be hard for Bungie to match that realism in worlds made entirely from scratch.

Of course, it would be nice if sunny, picturesque landscapes would be beautiful in videogames as well; obviously, they're generally more beautiful in real life than grimy street corners. I'm also just sick of grit, it's everywhere. I'd like everyone to realize that film noir was not actually the height of American cinema. I mean really...

....

From what I hear, though, Gears of War's graphics are not only good, they have merit, which means they are artful, full of what makes good graphics great. I am thrilled, because art in gameplay is sure to follow as a trend, if art in graphics catches on, and from what I hear, Gears of War is no slouch in that department either.

(edit when I realized I missed your point) Sure, Halo's worlds are full of cracks and fizzures and miscellaneous debris, but the point is, they are still neat and pretty and full of flat edges and razor-sharp corners. When you create a world from scratch, as in Halo, it becomes all the harder, and all the more imperative, to make the world convincing. Can I imagine myself on a beautiful alien ringworld? No, but Halo makes me believe, and that's no small feat. It will be difficult for Bungie to achieve with their picturesque alien landscapes what Epic achieved with their gritty urban locales, simply because it's easier to cover those razor-sharp edges with grit than by making those details nuanced in themselves. (I'm not knocking Epic, I'm just saying they had an easier challenge ahead of themselves, but a challenge nonetheless... have you ever tried to make grit look pretty?)

Oh, and it should be noted that manpower is its own enemy. Talented artists in large groups tend to come out with aesthetic hodgepodges with no clear direction or focus. Beautiful landscapes in games like Halo or Metroid Prime tend to come from small teams of about forty or so, working for a long period of time. A lot of mediocre games, on the other hand, come from enormous, 100+ teams slave-driven over a year and a half. Manpower can work and be helpful, but their needs to be a clear and focused artistic vision and an established heirarchy where everybody knows who is doing what. In that sense, adding more employees can completely undo the effort being made as well as bolster it. It's a tough balancing act that has human-resources people (good ones) in a constant bind. (Any company that tells you employees are their most important asset is lying; employees are a dime a dozen, and genuine talent cannot be bought and generally comes from a few smart people with, well, a lot of manpower. Do you see the problem? Hmmmm...)

(Now you see why "design by committee" has such a negative connotation. That's why I loathe the 360 console design so much, even if I love its functionality; that concave behemoth was created to appeal to everybody, which is impossible. I'd take the minimalist Wii design over the "sleek and sexy" 360 design any day, or, rather than that, the futuristic Dreamcast design, which says that, in the future, we'll have sworn off neon green for good. Ugh!)

(...Not to mention people can fashion themselves as leaders and abuse their underlings quite easily under this model. As Scott Adams noted, idiocy has a way of floating to the top... see, there's no easy way out. I've talked myself into a bind. I should get back on topic...)

(I love human resources, Microsoft should hire me to run their company...)

(edit: Ooooh! Oooh! Reply to new post! Yes, the new Halo 2 maps for 360 thingy is 100% true, I read it on Next Generation. Can somebody dig up the link for me? My fingers are tired, which is all my own fault, because I should learn to write more concisely. But yeah, I'm really excited. New maps yay!)

Has anyone else heard about Halo 2 releasing new maps just for xbox 360. I was talking to some players on GoW and that was brought up I didn't know if it was true or BS. I can't seem to find any info on it so I am assuming it is the later of the two.
