[META] Rampancy in Halo

Thought I'd move discussion of this out of the Chat announcement above, so it doesn't divert the thread.

The term "rampancy" is culled directly from the three novels. It is known that after approximately 7 years AIs essentially get "too smart for their own good" and begin to self-destruct. It is all explained in great detail in the novels, which IMHO are highly recommended reading.

That's actually incorrect as none of the three novels ever mention the word "rampancy". The origin of the term Rampancy when it comes to A.I.s actually extends to Greg Kirkpatrick's writing in the original Bungie FPS game Marathon. The three Halo novels only allude to the previously mentioned thinking-to-death, but never give it the name that was used in I Love Bees.

Yesterday I rewrote the Rampancy entry in the Fireflies glossary to take this into account.

Archon is right. The word "rampancy" does not appear in any of the three novels. It does crop up in the game, in reference to the Master Chief, if you start killing crewmembers on the bridge of the Pillar of Autumn... Cortana puts out a broadcast that the Master Chief has gone rampant, and in come a squad of Marines to put him down. But that's it, and it doesn't refer to an AI.

-- Steve's trying to be careful with the subject, as it could turn out to be important later. (And we'll find out in a bit more than two days! *giggle*)

I think the fact that Durga mentions that she may be going Rampant is VERY cool - its nice to finally have a DIRECT connection from Marathon to Halo, instead of all the "coincidences."

Quoted for emphasis. I don't think some of you realize how important this is.

Oh yeah, no kidding. It's one of the major jump-out-of-my-seat references I've seen thus far. I just wonder if Bungie or 4orty2wo wrote it.

One of the PM's in the chat said that they wrote, rewrote, rewrote, rewrote, then had Bungie give an approval on all of the scripts. So, it has been approved by Bungie.
