[OT/RANT] Do they just not get it? I've got a lot of friends. Many of them play video games as a past time. But out of all of them, I'm the only one who had any interest in ILB. Interactive fiction is fringe and weird, so I understand if they didn't enjoy the prospect of singing into a payphone in the middle of a mall.
But some of them just dismissed it as an overblown advertisement for Halo 2, and instantly didn't like it.
And not just my friends, but legions of slashdoters, something awful goons, and similarly uninformed masses who wave it away.
This mentality just pisses me off. ILB is so very unique in its ability to evolve. Listening to the PMs talk about how we influenced the game really shows how malleable ILB's story was. To call this truly unique piece of interactive fiction "Just an ad." and leave it at that infuriates me to no end.
Have other people had similar interactions and reactions?

i had a friend tell me he wouldnt give in to the microsoft rumor mill. He was saying stuff like "So many people thought halo 2 was going to come out early, why would I play [Ilovebees] to give into microsoft's rumor mill?" He just didnt understand, almost like it was a conspiracy. Oh well, he doesnt know what he missed...

ARGs are pretty much a subculture of a subculture, and in this case even one level deeper. If this wasn't related to Halo 2, the ARG would have been a subculture of role playing games. But throwing Halo 2 into the mix adds video gaming in there as a parent subculture somehow. The family tree gets messy here. And I think most people just don't know what to make of it as a result.
Most of the time the reaction I get is "oh, that's kinda cool... but not my thing".
I too was disappointed by the /. and SA reactions, but then again they weren't unexpected either. Throw the word Microsoft at /. and the knee-jerk reaction is to lash out in anger. And SA tends to be rather mean spirited to begin with.
But hey, their loss! And less of them meant more game play involvement for us

I honestly don't care what those who did not participate think... lets talk about those of us who did... we grew to quite a sizeable voice, made many new friends, were part of a potentially history making moment in gaming. Kudos to beekeepers.... the few, the proud, halo's truest gaming marines!

I know what you mean. I tried and tried to get my friends into this because I know they'd enjoy it. Unfortunately, they just shrugged it off as one of my little (and, I'll admit, often quite dumb) 'projects' I do now and again. To this day, my best friend still won't listen to the wavs Oh well. Like someone above me said, more involvement for us.

You said it early in your post - Interactive fiction is a fringe thing. I think its safe to say that Halo fans (by and large) reside strongly in the casual, mainstream gaming demographics.
The less you're into something, the less you factor it in when you judge something.
Its something that annoys hardcore gamers a lot. To those not appreciative, Fallout is "Just another post-nuclear-war game". System Shock 2 is "Just another lame game." Halo is "just another repetitive FPS".
To your friends, ILB is "just an ad for Halo 2." Thats cool. You disagree. Equally cool. No sense getting angry over it.

I babbled incoherently at my friends for the first few weeks of ILB, then I just gave up. It honestly, at that point, was a little hard to explain to somebody who wasn't already involved.
The wav files make a pretty decent stand-alone story though. Three of my friends are really into the Halo sidestories (i.e. First Strike and The Fall of Reach) and I finally just burned the completed audio story to cds (six) and put it in their hands. They are all enjoying them.
I think they will be ok with everything that happens until chapter 11. That's when the 2004 part of the story starts to really come into the picture and I can see them getting them confused. At that point I'm aiming them at thebruce's site and I'm sure they will get hooked from there.
They are probably going to "play" Ilovebees after everyone else has gone home. Kinda cool actually. It will live on in the new viewers, if only a little.

Well, he did tag his post, "[OT/RANT]"...
In other words, no sense getting huffy about not getting angry about it

not getting it My feeling is that people who don't get the fascinating concept of ARGs and see the potential of these games just completely lack vision and imagination.
People have to play a game to understand it. From the outside, the world of the game looks and feels different than it does from the inside. It is like the difference between standing around watching people ride a roller-coaster and actually taking the ride. You have to be willing to say "yes" to a new experience and see where it takes you.
Still, these games can be frustratingly difficult and excessively time consuming. While we write summaries, support newbies and make it easy to play, the truth is that after a while the learning curve becomes pretty steep in these games. This limits our ability to recruit friends into the game world.

So true! I have some friends that really like sci-fi stories/movies and we're not willing to give a chance to ILB! It's one of the best stories I listened/read/watched for quite a while!
It's a shame some people don't have the open mind to enjoy this! Even if they were not willing to participate on the game itself, they would certainly enjoy the story by itself! Some people would not consider paying attention to a story based on a video-game, other would consider this a marketing campaign not worthy of their time. Well, their loss ...

Being one who's finished the game already, I can tell you right now, ILB and Halo 2 have two totally different styles of plot... it's VERY likely that a strict Halo fan would probably be bored by ILB, and someone who loves ILB for it's story, might consider Halo 2 a typical sci-fi plot... don't get me wrong, Halo 2's story is very well written, but it's in a completely different environment and style than ILB. Both equally great... well, ILB moreso
I really, honestly, hope that there is more in the future along the same lines as ILB for story... it's like there's two loose story ends now *sigh*
