[META] ARGer, how old are you?

From the New York Post, this bothered me some:

Not to disparage any 19-year-olds that are playing (I've seen very few here who I would label as "immature") and I know that there are probably a lot of 19-year-old (or less) Halo fanboys here playing this game (heck, I'm a 27-year-old fanboy), but with the high level of coordination, intelligence, and general maturity that I have seen here, I have a hard time believing that we're all video-game obsessed 19-year-olds.

But I'm a man of data, not speculation. So it's poll time.

Well, I dont have any data to back up my speculation, but here's how I break it down mentally(Please, no offense if I malign you in this breakdown, I have no doubt that the vast majority of all people playing are particularly sharp, cognitive and mature. I love you guys!Smile ):

12-18 years old - A high likelihood for impatience, and less of a likelihood for an innate appreciation for puzzles and the mental rigors of the game. Also, immobile schedules(high school), parents, and the higher chance of not having a car to drive anywhere suggest to me that a lot of players in this group are either watching from the sidelines because they can't participate/ just want to play Halo.

18-25 years old - College kids, funloving, more open schedules, highly likely to be axon hunters, some of the "star" puzzle solvers

25+ years old - Less of these players, most of them seasoned or mathematically / puzzle inclined, I figure this is where we find some of our moderators, old hats and puzzle-solving champions.

Damn, I thought my life got more boring when I hit 26. Guess it's because I don't love fun anymore. Just bees. Very Happy

Just picked up Halo one for PC this weekend. Soon I will be a 28-year-old fanboy. Woo hoo!

I don't think media quite recognizes yet that we first generation computer users are aging. All we ever hear about are script kiddies and college freshman that go wrong. Or people who are too old and how they don't understand about patching their home systems, or decent passwords, etc. What about the millions of people who grew up with this stuff and do it right? (ok, thousands, ok hundreds Smile ). Don't we count for anything?

nothing wrong with aging fan boys as long as priorities are in order. I be 33, and though I cannot hang with the rank and file who tear up legendary like candy, I can handle myself in multiplayer. Wink

Got you beat, Daboking, being the 41 year old old goat out here. But one who has made arcade games literally my life for over 20 years, having designed, composed music for and working at 2 major manufacturers and back to repairing and programming retro games.

PS: Based on my showing at the anniversary ARG, I truly *SUCK* at mathematical puzzles!

<Sigh> Yet another generalization from the uninformed mass media. I say mad props to Weepun for both being critical of such 'journalism' and for bothering to test the local waters.

I also want to take a moment to convey that my experience has shown ours to be a community of mature, enthusiastic and insightful participants. I joined expecting flames and trout and instead found players rallied around a common goal. I encourage everyone to keep up the great team work.

I am a 20 year old working man. I unfortunately have the worst schedule for this game. I call it the anti-ILB schedule (8:15am - 4:45pm EST). Before I leave for the day, the site hasn't been updated at all, and when I get home in the evening everything is solved (or there are only about 5 audio files left to enhottenate). If only I was back in college, I would be an axon fiend.

i, however, am the 20 year old pro-ILB scheduled college kid (only 2 classes on Tuesday - 12:50 and 6:15 and I can miss my 12:50 one...)

the sad thing was i couldn't get to an axon (until this week!) so i could only update wikis, and watch people solve stuff (since IRC chat is outlawed here on the UF campus... retards who can't lock up their system caused a virus outbreak throughout the kids who use IRC to download movies and the like...) (:

Looks like I'm the raw wet-behind the ears kid.

A mere 18-year old over here, though that is fit to change in a month or two.

Then I can grow up to be the New York Times stereotype.

Score!

I'm a 31 year old fanboy. Except for Halo, which I've probably finished 50+ times, I have never completed a game more than once. Whether it's solo on Legendary or Multiplayer with friends, the framerate drops from all the mayham I cause.

I work in the restaurant biz so my schedule is adjustable. I post here, hit multiple axons, and have even put a MAJOR contribution into solving the most difficult puzzle to date (even though no one saw fit to recognize it).

Beyond that, the community here has had it's moments but always seems to come back to it's senses and govern itself justly. I have truly enjoyed being part of it and can't wait to play Halo 2 with the people I have met here.

22 year old part-time employed grad student here, amazingly with no class or job on Tuesdays! Couldn't have planned it better if I tried.

Cheebers:

Well said, I agree with what you brought up about those of us who grew up with gaming wholehartedly. I got my NES sometime around age 5 or 6 and never looked back. Just look at the game types out there today (Halo, MGS, BMX XXX, etc.) compared to back in 'the day' (Mario, Zelda, etc.). Much less exclusively kid-friendly today, be it in content, complexity, or both. The gaming industry does recognize that the target audience's upper age bound is expanding.

Though it does seem strange to picture myself at my Grandparents' age still gaming away... What a strange world that will be when everyone is of a tech-literate generation that grew up with computers.

I'd also like to salute the community here. This is the first public forum I've been involved in that had no trolls or flames to speak of (knock on wood).

I am a 19 year old college freshman at Colorado School of Mines. I love video games, and now I love ARG's. This is so much fun, I want to do more, but without the motivation of finding out more about the Halo world, I don't know if I will be able to participate in any more. (Well, I have two other reasons. First of all, I'm horrible at the puzzles, I haven't solved anything. Secondly, after November 9th all my time will be spent playing Halo 2!) While I do fall into the catergory, I hate stereotypes like this, but what can you do. Until vdeogames become as widely popular as say, music, movies or books, we will always be looked on as the minority. Oh well, back to playing Halo!
