A girl that plays video games, other than the Sims or Tetris is a rare gem, and I congratulate all men who get a girlfriend who will beat their asses in Halo, and not just Dr. Mario. Smile

I've heard that the plural for "chad" is "chad."

At least YOU can try to get them into it. If you're female, well, by the gods, you'd better not mention you like video games. Make THAT fatal mistake, and suddenly, you're a pariah. You suddenly become childish, stupid, a freak and many other undesirable things.

Man, if a girl tells me she likes video games (specifically Halo) then thats an extra 10 hotness points in my book. Id love to meet a gril that would play on live with me.

Yeah, guys think it's cool.

But when you work in an office with mostly women (ie you are employed as a secretary), you'd better watch it.

I think part of the problem is that other women *know* it appeals to men, but they feel it is a means of competition that they cannot utilize. The way to deal with it, in a cultural sense, is to socially coerce all women to refrain from competing by that method.

This is the same reasoning that applies to why gender roles are more often enforced by members of your same gender. There's nothing worse than being cast out because you don't like to shop, or play football (for you guys).

And no, generally the hordes of drooling geeks don't bother me. I enjoyed giving them whiplash at GenCon several years ago (while it was still here in beautiful Milwaukee). In retrospect, I shouldn't have worn that top. I wasn't thinking about it, it was just a comfortable summer shirt. How was I supposed to notice how low cut it was?

Or maybe just lucky. Very Happy But of COURSE you know that those people exist everywhere, not just in school.

(Well, maybe not EVERYwhere. They don't seem to exist on most Halo fanboy boards. Crying or Very sad But everywhere ELSE, anyway.)

I'd say that sounds like the perfect set of qualifications for a professional PM.

kali,
Instead of women looking at video games as an edge in compition, we should encourage all of them to play. Thus, getting rid of the edge, so to speak. lol.

Nah, I understand how that works, my mother works in a similar environment, and while she isn't into video games, she faces similar issues in different areas. Thats the reason, that you have a life outside of work, so you can enjoy those things, even if it goes against social norms.

So are you refering to me as a drooling geek? Wink

Now I may not be a genius when it comes to Etruscan pottery or poetry or many things but I can tell you I know my fair share of information from differential equations to thermodynamics and static's and what I have learned is that it is important to understand that each person has their own genius and it is important to recognize their abilities. Sure the Machinist doesn't know how to do complex analysis but I need him because his skills are a necessary part of the production process. Even the stupidest man knows something you do not, and it is better to glean that information from them then disregard them and never learn from them. I am sorry you chose a major that sounds very specialized, but the fact remains there is little importance in industry(outside of academia) that requires the knowledge of Etruscan pottery. That is one nice thing about being a mechanical engineer. I know that in industry there are others like myself that know what I know and I can discuss things with. But what industry is there for Etruscan pottery? Information is important but it is impossible to expect everyone or even a small percentage of people to know specialized information. A good example is if I ask a random person if they know the Bernouli equation 99% of the people will give me a blank stare, and I don't expect them to know. I wish there was an industry for every topic but the fact remains we live in the real world and in the real world we only produce things we can put to use today, and I am afraid Etruscan pottery is at the very bottom of that list, while car's, jet's, and computers are at the top of that list.

Notice my horrible grammar, lack of punctuation, and run on sentances, clearly the mark of a science major.

Some of us are both:P And by that, I mean, a BS in "Math and Computer Science."

Though if we did away with the math portion, I wouldnt lose sleep. Thats what I get for not going to a trade school. You dont so much learn "Computer Programming", as you learn Theory of Computational Discrete Mathematics, and how to prove that addition works via logical proofs.

Bah.
