Since the thread is somewhat active again, and because I just decided on an avatar, I will share its origins (even if nobody reads it) Very Happy
Obviously, to all Terry Pratchett fans, it is the Librarian of Unseen University, as drawn by Paul Kidby... (It was this, or Death of Rats...and that was in pencil).

My name comes from a long-ago time when I played RPGs - Gestas was my thief character. I stole the name from one of History's most unlucky thieves - Gestas being one of the two thieves (Dismas being the other) crucified at the Cross with Jesus. Unfortunately, the name appears to be in wide use by a lot of people on the net... ah well Smile

Trivia time: When you view a cross with Jesus on, you will sometimes see the foot bar tilted at an angle. In many illustrations, this represented the fact that Gestas didn't repent when offered the chance and went down to Hell, but Dismas did and went to Heaven (even becoming a Saint in the Catholic Church no less!). So, the higher end points to the side Dismas was on, and the other for Gestas... (for an atheist, being raised Catholic has proved useful in some very odd ways).

/me didn't know that krystyn spoke Orc.. Razz

Gabriel Blade's a long story, I'm sure many of you think it's because of the Angel, but it's not, actually. My old sig-name used to be just Blade, which is actually an evolution from my old "Blademaster", which itself is derived from the 1999 Game of the Year, Homeworld, a 3D Real-time Strategy game based in Space, where one of the ships was the Blade MkV Interceptor. Blademaster just follows thanks to my huge ego instantly knowing I would be an ace pilot. Gabriel Blade came from needing a first name for a reasonable last name, (and I've used many horrible puns, like "Sharper than your average.." in siglines..) The reason I chose Gabriel was actually thanks to one of my other favourite games, Gabriel Knight..

So I put the two together, and since his inception, Gabriel Blade has been tearing up many many forums in his various guises, as a cocky fighter pilot, (or more recently, a slightly more level-headed Admiral directing his fleets), an entrepreneur, and a con-man. (Which, really, is two for the price of one, when you think about it. Wink ) On the IRC chan, I just go by Gabriel, but I'm still the same loud, arrogant, fighter pilot persona.

Unless you get to know me, and you'll realise that Nic is about as far from Gabriel as it's possible to be. I'm loud, noisy and arrogant as a sheild.

As for an avatar.. I'm still working on that. Razz

Not Orc, Orangutan.

Gestas, where did you get the images? I'd very interested in seeing them in their entirety.

My avatar...I like Mountain Dew®. I drink an awful lot of Mountain Dew®. One day, I was vacation on the beach, drinking a Mountain Dew®, and I thought "You know, it would probably be a cool picture if I placed said can of Mountain Dew® with the beach in the background."

It was.

Thus, my avatar was born.

On the subject of my name, it's a mix of my "jedi name" (remember that??) and the name that Knights of the Old Republic gave me in character generation. It's not a very exciting story, but at least it's unique and pronouncable! (and, incidentally, it contains 70% of my name).

Oh, dear. You said monk-- err, that word. I'll try to distract him with some peanuts, but really, in future, he does get awfully upset whenever anyone says monkey oh $#!t.

Did someone call me?

My avatar: an oatmeal cream pie.

Why: I am a monkey. Krystyn puts it this way:

You are hanging from the light fixtures, and throwing erasers at students' heads, all the while freaking out over me being so quiet in the morning whilst eating oatmeal creme pies.

Yep, orangutan, definitely. Not m... oh, wait. Krystyn did that joke already Very Happy

I "borrowed" the image from http://www.paulkidby.com. You can also go through http://www.paulkidby.co.uk which resolves to the .com but with a different navigation page Smile

For some nice large pictures though, you should visit http://www.lspace.org. It has a great section on art from the Discworld, (including a Paul Kidby section) and even some full-size Christmas Hogswatch cards/pictures too Very Happy

(I like these ones)

Ah, well. My old avatar was a detail from a photograph that I liked (copyrighted -- I am a Bad Girl).

The new one is Natacha Atlas, from the cover of her "Something Dangerous" album. I no longer like Ms. Atlas as a musician quite as much as I once did, but I was struck by the photograph on the album cover: it's probably too small to see here, but it's sort of metallic-looking (especially the hair) and almost looks like a drawing until you look closely and discover that it is, indeed, a photograph.

More importantly, when I cropped it to its current dimensions, she looked like she was thinking. I liked that.

Very cool avatar Phaedra Very Happy

And not as creepy as a large eye.

Watching, watching me from the page, seeing everything I do, seeing deep into my soul ....

Ahem.

Glad you changed it Wink (Now if only Nova would change from an eye to something different... as long as it ain't a clown. Scary little things. Can't stand 'em)

(Now off to read the other threads. Boy, I'm off-forum for around two days, and there are 340-odd posts to catch up on!)
