Get Well Gamers So now that most of us are going to be getting our shiny new copies of Halo 2 very soon... I'd like to make a suggestion on what to do with your used copies of Halo 1 (or any other old games/consoles you might have collecting dust).
The goal of the Get-Well Gamers Foundation is to provide video games and video game systems to hospitals so that the patients within can be entertained during their stay. Whether it's a Sega Genesis for a common room, a Game Boy Advance for a single bed, or anything in-between, the Foundation's aim is for every child in the hospital to be able to have some form of electronic entertainment whenever they want it.
It's like Penny-Arcade's "Child's Play", except that it goes year round.
The website is http://www.get-well-gamers.org
If you have any old games, hardware, or peripherals for any console system (new or old) that you don't use any more please consider sending them off to GWG.
They are a Non-Profit Organisation, and your donations to them are tax deductible. So you can clear some space for new toys and get a few deductions in for tax season at the same time.
Also, if you know of a Hospital that could use help from an organisation like GWG, they are always interested in being connected with facilities that need their help. The Get-Well Gamers Foundation is always looking to expand its network of hospitals. If you have a hospital you or your child have used in the past, or even if you just know of a children's hospital in your area, feel free to contact them and they'll be happy to add them to their network.
Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Thanks for posting this, HHM. I, for one, had no idea such an organization existed. Very cool. Very.

Well... They're not international right now... But you should contact them... Maybe you could start a NZ chapter or something!
Go All Blacks!

This is getting off topic... But I always love how Kiwis react when a non-Kiwi indicates that they know who/what the All Blacks are...
My coworker, who is from England, was less enthused when I would bust out with "Go All Blacks!".
Back on topic... Even if the hardware you have is busted and doesn't work (or doesn't work well) they will still be interested in it. If they are not able to fix it, they can use it for spare parts to fix other consoles.

Wow, this is really cool. I didn't know anyone had mentioned us on here 'till I saw it come up on a google search.
Yes, we are planning on going international at some point in the future, and we've already started collecting for it. We've got a small stack of PAL systems in our inventory, waiting for our first European hospital, heh.
So by all means, if you guys have a non-NTSC system you want to donate, feel free to send it to us. Just please include a note saying what reigon it is so it doesn't get mixed up with the others, heh.
If you need the address, it's
The Get-Well Gamers Foundation
21612 Hanakai Lane
Huntington Beach, CA, USA, 92646
And if it's too much to ship from where you are, feel free to e-mail us at GetWellGamers (At) gmail.com (Don't want spam-spiders picking us up, heh.)
Thanks again to everyone for showing an interest, and HitsHerMark especially for spreading the word!

When I saw the topic of this thread, I thought it was a get-well card to all of us going through axon withdrawal. Imagine my surprise when I found it that it was even cooler than what I thought.

Just a suggestion, guys -- and I have no desire to detract from HHM's post, but since she's the one who mentioned Halo 1 anyway, I thought I'd point it out -- Take care to make sure the games you send are kid-appropriate. Much as it's a generous idea to send your orphaned Halo 1's to the kids in the hospital, I don't know how much I'd like a sick kid to go around gunning down things...
Try to keep it E or T, if possible, folks.

Actually, that's not always the case. When kids have been going to the same pediatric ward their whole lives (Think cancer patients and other extremely long-term illnesses) they'll often keep them in their familiar environment up 'till they're 21 or 22, well over the acceptable age range for M games.

Are you looking for computer games as well, or just video games?

While we haven't officially expanded the Foundation's reach to include computers yet, we are accepting games in a kind of pre-emptive stockpile. Games need to be Win98 or better (no DOS games, unfortunately) and we're especially looking for edutainment games (Reader Rabbit, Putt-Putt, Oregon Trail, etc.)
Funny enough, kids usually start out on computers, go to consoles later, and then back to computers in their teens.
And if you need to know where to send games, just go to www.get-well-gamers.org and click on "Donate"
Thanks!

As already pointed out, the games you send in don't ALL have to be T for teen or lower.
But I do like that he's brought up checking what the game is rated by the ESRB . (Everybody should know about the ESRB, particularly parents.)
Only if you see a game that is rated "Ao" (Adults Only) should you reconsider sending it to GWG.
And even that shouldn't be a problem... The only game I can think of that would get an Ao off the top of my head would be "BMX XXX". Which, I have it on good athority, was such a crapy game why would you want to inflict it on anybody much less sick people.

Rumble Roses is another example of a game whose content we would consider inappropriate for donation. Manhunt would be as well.
