[Halo 2] How To Spot Standby Cheating Here is a video IMnotGarbage recorded as a safeguard in case they were cheated.
And they caught a few groups.
Here is the evidence, the first game of which is a good example of how to recognize the standby cheaters.
The others are less obvious until certain moments. Watch for the lag reverts, and notice the "new" location of the bomb/flag carrier.

That Spartan Looks Oddly Familiar.. What are the odds that there would be two people using the name IMnotGarbage? Launch Every Beekeeper for Great Justice!
My question is, do these F'ers get banned from XBL and have their rankings stripped or not?

I can't believe I didn't connect that!

What is "standby cheating?"

If you are hosting a game, and have a router that has a "standby" mode, you can switch your router into standby, 'causing everyone else to see the BSoD. However, while they're all sitting on their thumbs, you're still on the map, allowing you to get the flag or plant the bomb or do whatever uncontested.
It's a vile vile vile method of cheating.

If you rat them out, yes. If you catch someone cheating, make sure you go to "Recent Players" in the after-game lobby, select their name and press "x", and send negative feedback (select "cheating") to Xbox Live.
If you want to make certain, there's a sticky post on bungie.net in their Zanzibar forum for people to post links to the Gameviewer for the game in question so that Bungie and Xbox Live can review it for proof. (Can't give direct link, due to cursed firewall at work.)
-- Steve encourages players to help keep the playing field clear of such trash as standby cheaters.

Gee, I already have my XBox piped through my VCR to accomodate my aging TV. I'm sure this has happened to my party more than once. You want I should start recording all my sessions?

Say, why does IMNotGarbage shoot and stick a grenade on a body that's clearly already down? He does this more than once, so I know it's not an accident.

Because he knows the deceased player can see it.
I think it's our IMnotGarbage; he accepted my friend request. He's a level 24!

holy cow... ok so that only works when you're the host of the game?
that's interesting, because aren't all the games hosted on live servers? Or am I wrong in that? Is the host actually hosting the game itself and everyone is connected directly to them? The way you can pass the hosting from person to person in the lobby makes me think everyone's connected to a central server, rather than everyone switching who they connect to as the host each time...
then again, maybe the lobby is hosted on a central server, and once the game starts, that's when the actual connections are made from players to the host... hm. That would explain why the game ends when the host leaves right? man, I'm not thinking rightnow...

We've been victims of the subtle cheat before-in Colossus, where our flag would vanish from the center trench, and then within seconds, they'd have a point. We reported em, but I couldn't tell you if anything got accomplished.

There is a new way for non-hosts to pull it off. Not cool.
What IS cool is that IMnotGarbage, IN THIS VIDEO, caught the NUMBER ONE RANKED Minor Clanmatch Team members cheating!

No, the game is hosted by a participant's Xbox. Live servers handle the administrative stuff, but the actual gameplay is driven by a 'box somewhere.
I don't know the full gory details, but I do know that. That's why Halo 2's ability to automatically swap hosts was considered such a bonus... most Live games dump everybody out if the host leaves.
-- Steve hasn't noticed whether this works terribly well or not... so either he hasn't run into hosts abandoning or it works terribly well!
