This is not a red herring

We were told by Marlene that "Keep in mind that what looks like a red herring might not be. "

Then this picture was given to us with the hint...

Ceci n'est pas un hareng rouge (This is not a red herring)

We've all seen how if you fold the picture like in the Mad magazines you see a fish and "Red HerRing". Obviously we're missing something here, so what else could this mean?

Red Herring Clue Solved

I do believe we can now put this clue to rest

Red herring (fallacy)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
A red herring, also known as ignoratio elenchi (Latin: ignorance of refutation) or irrelevant thesis, is a logical fallacy where an irrelevant topic is introduced to divert the attention away from the topic that's being discussed, or an argument where the premises are not logically connected to the conclusion. It's commonly referred to as "changing the subject."

It is also worth knowing, however, that there is a very famous painting of a hat (I believe it's by Magritte) which has above it the words "ceci n'est pas un hat" (or whatever hat is "en francaise"). His point was that it is indeed not a hat, but a picture of one.

That help clear things up a bit? Wink

Well, originally I would have agree with you. When we had only the picture I too thought it was a red herring. But the picture was reintroduced to us with the phrase - Ceci n'est pas un hareng rouge (This is not a red herring).

So were we wrong to think the entire picture is a red herring? Was only the folding of the picture the red herring? That's the route I'm leaning towards.
