Second Urn Found!

Mike's blog:

Quote:
Once Peter and I were underwater, we realized how difficult it would be. The water was running fast on top but it was muddy below. Hard to see. We kept diving and resurfacing all day until I thought I found something metallic.

It was a lock box but it was lodged in the sand so deeply that it was impossible to pull out. That meant that we had to try to open it underwater. We became so absorbed in opening the box, that neither of us noticed the air in our tanks running low.

Finally, Natalie noticed and urged Peter and I to surface. But we were stubborn. Determined to open the box despite the odds.

I noticed Peter getting woozy so I motioned for him to share my air with me. We passed the mouthpiece back and forth, fighting to see as we were losing light. Finally, Peter figured out the numerical sequence but it was impossible to open the rusted door.

If it hadn't been for Natalie, well, I don't even want to think about it. I'm just glad she was there. That we all were. It took all of us to get the urn.

Peter's blog:

Quote:
Mike and I rose early again and started diving. We went down together this time. Mike signaled me. I could tell he was excited by his body language.

He pointed to something metallic lodged in the sand. A lock box? We swam toward it and dug away at the wet sand.

But I was having trouble breathing. I surfaced. Examined my tank. Realized that yesterday's mishap had created a pinhole leak.

We'd have to share one tank. Mike dove down first, aiming the underwater lantern toward what we thought might be a lock box. He surfaced quickly. It was the lock box!

We dove down together, sharing oxygen. Tried to pull out the lock box. Impossible. It was wedged too deep in the sand and the current was working against us. We'd have to try to open it underwater. Mike held the lantern and I tried to make out the lock in the murky water.

As far as I could see, the lock box had a numerical keyboard that read:

123
456
789

First I tried randomly pushing numbers. No luck. Then I tried a series of other combinations. Again no luck. What I didn't realize was that our oxygen was running out.

I was feeling a little faint. Kind of sleepy really. Then I remembered the pi coin in the purse. I knew it had some significance. I rapidly pushed in the decimal expansion of pi: 3 1 4 1 6. The box didn't exactly spring open. It was rusted tight.

I surfaced again. The next time Mike went down. He couldn't get the door open by himself. Natalie showed up on shore with a tire iron.

Then something went terribly wrong. Mike tried to open the lock box with the tire iron and it slipped, hitting him in the head. I had almost no oxygen and my thoughts were getting muddier.

Natalie surprised me. I think maybe she even surprised herself.

Natalie's blog:

Quote:
Peter and Mike were exhausted and they wouldn't listen to me. They just kept going under. We were losing the light and they couldn't get the lock box up or open.

I found an old tire iron in a pile of junk upriver. Mike took it and they both went under.

I didn't see any bubbles from the tank and I began to get worried when they didn't surface. I held onto a branch and waded out into the water. It was so cold. And I couldn't really tell what was going on.

Finally, I held my breath and stuck my face under the icy water. I saw blood swirling around and a gash across Mike's forehead. Peter was trying to get him to the surface but his air was nearly out so he had no strength. The lock box was open a crack.

I went in deeper and reached out with one hand to Peter, holding onto the tree with the other hand. My wet hand was beginning to slip and I thought I'd lose my grip. Just then, I was able to yank Peter up. Peter had a firm grip on Mike so I figured he'd be right behind, but Mike's foot caught on the lock box, holding him back.

Once Peter surfaced, he took in some oxygen and dove back without the tanks. This time he managed to free Mike's foot. He went back one more time with the crow bar. When he resurfaced, I thought he'd failed. Then he smiled at me and I knew. He had the urn.

woo

This is great stuff, the idea seems to be that we follow the same steps for the third urn... without the physical part that is.

We need to review all the information before the registration on Monday.
