[QUESTION] The order of recruitment into Team Jersey?

I know that Kamal joined up before Jan, but I'm unsure about Rani. Certainly, when she arrived at Jersey's, Kamal and Jan were already there, but I got the impression that at least some of the damage to Jersey's apartment was done after Jersey got back from visiting her(in Boston?).

Can anyone offer a concrete timeline?

You're right on the money Very Happy
As far as Chapter 10 goes, just take the assembled files from humptydumpty and listen to them in the order you gave - Kamal, Jan, Rani, Jersey, (Herzog). That gives the chronological order.

I went through the wave files and reordered them/split them to send to some friends who hadn't followed it, and that was the best order for Chapter 10.
The other chapters in almost chronological/best order (for me anyway) were:
Weeks 1-3: Jan, Kamal, Jersey, Herzog for weeks 1-3.
Week 4: Jan, Kamal, Jersey, Rani, Herzog.
Week 5: Rani, Jersey, Kamal, Jan, Herzog. (Rani comes first as we hear about Reach. Then Jersey since he rushes in to ask Durga about it...)
Week 6: Jan, Kamal, Jersey, Rani, Herzog.
Week 7: Kamal, Rani, Herzog, Jan part 1 (till the winddown just before the body is being moved...Bigger Dog), Jersey, then Jan part 2 (Shh Baby).
Week 8: Kamal, Jersey part 1 (Burrito), Jan, Jersey part 2 (after the funeral... The Girl Had To Be Real), Rani, Herzog.
Week 9: Back to Jan, Kamal, Jersey, Rani, Herzog.
Then Week 11 is the all-in-one "Heroes".
Week 12: Ordered as it was on the original page - Rani part 1 (Cell Block), Jersey part 1 (Just A Little Sting), Jan part 1 (One Point One), Kamal (the entire part), Rani part 2 (Section Zero), Jan (They're Here), Jersey (Be With Me).

Those were the extra titles I gave them - I found it easiest to take the assembled files and just split them with a sound file editor according to how they broke in the original pages Smile

(Some people don't like putting it purely chronologically, but I do Very Happy There's also a bit in Week 9 where Jersey comes third but talks about Jan as if it is present tense - I decided not to split Jan, and put him third so it wasn't as jarring coming immediately afterwards. That's pretty much the only deviation from chronological order though).

Sorry for the long post - just wanted to get my favourite ordering out there Smile

That wasn't, quite, what I wanted to know, but thanks anyway. Maybe I should rephrase:- I think it likely that Jersey showed up on Rani's door before Jan joined the team, and possibly before Kamal joined the team. Perhaps Jersey got back just in time for Kamal to turn up on his door? Has anyone got any comment?

Incidentally, you mentioned a sound file editor? Where can I get one? Only I've got a WHOLE LOT of 30-second files that I'd like to see as a smaller bunch of longer files.

Okay - sorry. Smile I should have listened to the sound files before I posted, (and re-read your post)!

I personally think it is pretty much up in the air about the actual timeline for at least some of the files. There's absolutely nothing to tell us just when Jersey contacted Rani at her apartment. We just know it is within the week before the Saturday Meeting. So I agree, it could have come at three points, and it seems an argument could be made for each one:

Contacting Rani first of all - this could be the most likely as she is the important one to get to the artifact on Chawla Base. The recruitment of Kamal, then Jan, would be Durga just being efficient after already having a plan.

However, if we assume she contacted Rani after Kamal arrived, it also works. Durga had her plan, and was already planning to get Rani to help, and Jersey could have gone to see Rani when he was out and about getting a new lamp and dishes to replace the ones broken in the fight Smile

The idea that Rani was contacted last is probably the least likely, since I would think contacting her would come first unless you were confident of being able to use Jan. It just seems that Durga would have planned for Rani, then looked at who else was needed. But, if we are listening to the assembled wave files from humptydumpty, we need to place Rani after Jan, since her train trip leads straight to Jersey's apartment on Saturday.

So, this post isn't really any help at all! It could be any of them, and I don't think there's any way of tying it down further. So, I say just choose your favourite order and go with it Very Happy

(As for wave file editors - I use Audacity, an open-source sound editor available for Windows, Linux, Mac. I found it easiest to ignore all the little files from each page though. The humptydumpty page has the assembled files, and it is easier to just break those up into the wind-up - wind-down segments if you want to play with the order of things. It's much less work, and manipulating the small files will end up pretty much the same anyway!)

Hmm, I think you're assuming that Rani caught the train the same day that Jersey contacted her. That doesn't necessarily have to be the case. Smile

I've been giving this some thought and I feel more inclined to think that Rani was contacted first. If you listen to 'Jersey's Big Plan', you'll glean that there's still doubt as to whether the debris from the fight has been cleared up. This kind of suggests that the lamp and the dishes, the hole in the wall, and Rani turning up all happened on the same day. Jersey's response when he answers the door would be consistent with that as well. Laughing

(God, you wouldn't think that so much typing would be done over such a small detail, would you?)

btw. Where does Kamal live? That cop in 'Red Button' was with the Berkeley police, but there are three Berkeley's in the US. In 'The Devil', we're told that Reno is nearby, but there are two Reno's and each of the Berkeley's is within reasonable distance of one of them. Also in 'The Devil', Kamal says he's heading 'all the way to the east coast', which suggests, but doesn't prove, that he lives on the west coast.

Nope, I think you're definitely right that Jersey contacts Rani a day or more before she takes the train trip to Jersey's. But I was saying, if you want to listen to the files in the humptydumpty fully-assembled form, you have to put Rani just before Jersey, and that means they have to come after Kamal and Jan. So you'd have to accept a time break of a day or two within Rani's assembled file Smile

I also agree that Rani was contacted first, but I'm not sure about the fight happening on the Saturday (the same time Rani turns up) - maybe it's just because I'm lazy, and it would take me a day to go out and buy a new lamp! Plus, if it was the same day, you would think Kamal would have just stayed at Jersey's, but there's no mention of him when Jan goes to Jersey leading me to think it's the next day, and he's not there.

So I would personally go for something like:
Kamal starts travelling to New Jersey.
Jersey goes to see Rani beginning of the week.
Around Thursday or Friday, Kamal arrives and lamp gets broken Wink
The next day, Jan sees Jersey after getting turned down at the recruitment office (possibly Saturday morning)
Saturday they all meet at last. Smile

I have no idea about geography though - I barely know my way around my own city let alone another country!

Okay, so you're gonna have to ask yourself just what exactly is Team Jersey. Is it the team that infiltrated Chawla Base or is it people that Durga has been spying on, or what? Team Jersey's first referrence came in week 5 or 6 (I'm too lazy to re-listen at the moment) when Durga insisted that that was their team name. Durga and Jersey then helped Jan kill Kinkle. Even though Jan didn't kill Kinkle. So was Jan officially a Team Jersey member then? I'd say so, since Durga was used in Jan's revenge mission.

Kamal was Yasmine's brother, so obviously Durga knew him longer than Jan, but she didn't get in contact with him (aside from the chatter) until the Chawla Base mission.

For a good split by scene rather than thread for weeks 1 and 2 (so far) go here and here... trying to write a chronological story from audio threads that potentially take place simultaneously is ... fun... to say the least Smile

and BTW, I use Goldwave for my editing... it's shareware, but it's a fully functional program with a 'toll' fee per command, so once your total gets to its max (per session) it just pops up a reminder every few commands... very unintrusive, and quite powerful, IMO... not sure if there's a non-windows version though...

Now you've got me doubting my order Very Happy
To be honest - I didn't even think about splitting the humptydumpty files till I got to Week 7 and it was jarring with the Jan/Jersey intercut. So, the first ones I just figured they would be able to get the picture much like a movie often does, by going through an entire person's view and then swtiching to another... But, now I'm wondering if I could have ordered it better for my friends - I will now go compare and contrast with yours... after all, you've done all the hard work already Smile
(At least I sent them your link as a good starting point, along with FireFlies wiki - they can always check for themselves Wink)

yeah, and I totally agree, most chapters until later can work thread by thread... there doesn't seem to be any definitive order to the scenes... it all depends on how you want to spin the story... mine is just one of many possible ways... technically, because all the threads take place simultaneously for the most part, you could theoretically tell the story scene by scene jumping from threads... so giving your friends the threads in their order may still be a perfectly reasonable lineup... mine's just another. but ya, it'll be fun when it gets to the later chapters... Smile

I can't help thinking of the Tarantino film Pulp Fiction. The story followed the antics of each of the characters in turn, with little regard to chronology.

Oh yeah, and Kamal lives on the west coast. Durga mentions in 'Just A Little Sting' that she's booked him a shuttle there.

btw, Thebruce: When you're writing Creeeepy, do you refer to the Axon Plot, or the sound files? I only ask because there are a handful of tiny errors dispersed through the Axon Plot, which I only noticed when I read along with the files. Smile

Yeah, when I'm writing it I'm actually listening a lot more to every single word in order to write the narrative... I've already found a few typos, and they got corrected. Larger ones I'm simply correcting in the fiction and not worrying about in the axon plot... once creepy's done, the axon plot will be forwarding over to the respective Creepy chapters...

and BTW, I know the next update is now 3 weeks late... I'm going to attempt to get all 6 (*shock*) chapters done this week for the next update...
