Vortech:
I dunno, More than anything I just have NO faith in hollywood to make a movie where we NEVER see the protagonist's face.

Just wait till you see Sin-Jin Smyth Smile

Phaedra: Bade Runner is an excellent movie, as is the book. On a curious note, the movie itself actualyl harkens back to pure film noir, with Harrison Ford as a hard boiled detective. I t also encompasses many philosophical points. The final speech of Rutger Hauer will definitely make you think in new directions.

I would like to see the Master Chief not because I want to know what he looks like(hollywood's version would be a strong, handsome, square-jawed guy under there), but because it is part of the story.

If you remember from the books the Master Chief has been in that armor for a looooonnnnggggg time. In fact, he was put into cryo sleep in the armor when they made the "blind jump" which landed them at the first Halo. He was brought out of that cryo sleep with basically freezer burn all over his body. He is scarred, torn, battered, bruised, broken, frozen, pale as death and a multitude of other things.

It would have to be done very delicately. You can't just have him taking his armor off, and they don't even have to show his face, but I believe that seeing him, in the flesh with all of the wounds on his body could further the story line very well. James James always said how the 2.0's aren't human...well, let's see it.

that could be interesting... do it like the intro in Halo 2, when MC puts his helmet on... we know it's off, but the camera moves up his body as he puts it on so when we get to his head, it's on Smile

but yeah, right now, playing MC, there's no 'illusion' of playing someone else - it's like you are the chief... if they show his face, or characterize him in a movie, it'll be like playing 'that guy' in the game... the books are different because they really make MC 'real' per se... he still doesn't have a face... all he has is personality, and it's a personality the gels with the gameplay itself... the books help us know what MC's like, but doesn't make MC a 'real' person like a movie would...

It wouldn't even have to show his whole body. It could be a scenario like this:

Scene: The MC goes into the infirmary to get checked out by a doctor. He is standing there, naked, as a doctor is looking him over to make sure that none of his wounds are too serious.

Camera: The camera angle would have to be right, as well as the aperture setting, but the Doc could be kneeling at one point looking at a foot injury(or any injury). the camera is technically focused on the doctor, however, one side of the MC's body is also focused in there from just below the shoulderblade to the just below the knee. Not his whole backside either...split him right down the middle..follow the natural crack of things, you know Wink

Can you picture it?

Yes.

However, I don't want to see Mini-Chief, so I'll pass on this idea.

lol.

There is something to be said for showing MC in the past, though. With all the heavy themes of how this war has made some people totally lose thier humanity, others view humanity differently, and even humanity springing up where you least expect it, you could have a very rich movie focusing on John. The movie could totally focus on John's progression from a six-year-old prodigy to a piece of UNSC equipment in other's eyes.

If done correctly, it wouldn't have to cause any immersion problems for those playing the game, and there's plenty of room for development of dramatic relationships while they're in training (where we see him as a human) contrasted against his life sentence into the prison of his mark4 armor. It would deal with John's own struggle to remain human while being always surrounded by death and destruction. Or to be a person when he's faced such brainwashing and training. Does he remember what its like to touch skin-to-skin? Does he secretly wish that he could go back to how things were when he was still human? I can picture a really powerful shot of him looking at a symbol of his past love/humanity/freedom later in the movie, with the camera trained on the reflection in his helmet...it could be fairly powerful.

Or take the ILB approach.
Or follow Dr. Halsey.

Movies based upon games are usually bad because of bad directing, acting or some other creative force in the movie going awry. Resident Evil isn't too bad from what I hear, and Xmen/SpiderMan/LOTR are all fairly true to their respective concepts. A halo movie could be done and be a-okay. It really just comes down to who writes, directs, stars and produces.

I would think they'd name it something else than Halo if it weren't based on the original games.
