[Info/Meta] Significant Digits

I did a search and was suprised that no one had posted on this yet, so I'll just throw it out there.

In the Bible, when numbers are used, they are 90% symbolic. Example: when the number 40 is used, in all likely hood, it doesn't mean the exact number 40, it means alot. So 40 days and 40 nights, really just means it rained for a really friggen long time, but the exact number is unimportant.

6 is the number for imperfection. 666 is extreme imperfection (sign of the devil)

7 is the number for perfection (days in a week) 777 is the number used to symbolize god.

so 777?

dunno what it means, it could just be Bungie having fun, but it maybe relevant. Have fun specing!

I'm sorry Alex. Your surprise that no one has mentioned this is unfounded.
I haven't ever given anyone a trout so I'll just say...a couple of months late.

its been a documaneted fact that Bungie has a loved for the #7. They have used it many many times before in the storys/games/media anything. 777 was more than likly decided because it is the magic number for bungie.

Bungie loves 7s. Simple as that. They also like 3, but not as much as 7.

They don't like 3 as much as 7 because they have to add 4 to it to make 7. Shocked

just to let you all know, 3 is another Biblical number. i.e. the Trinity: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Spirit.

6 is the number of man. 666 is the number of man imitating God.

7 is the number of God. 777 is nothing more than the number of axons needed to unlock more axons.

When the Bible says '40,' it means 40. When it says 100,000, we have little choice but to assume that it means 100k ... maybe not EXACTLY 100k but certainly something more specific than 'a lot.' When it says 'a countless multitude,' that's when you can assume it means alot.

This is actually my first post (I've been here since late July...I guess I just never felt I could contribute anything significant with how fast everyone else is, that includes now Wink ).

I only say this because I took a course in religion recently; judging by your name your probably an afficionado on religion so don't take this as the gospel truth...haha...nevermind (rood means cross, right?) but as I recall 7 is considered a divine or holy number of some kind and in Biblical text, things that come in sets of 3's are considered to be emphasized "to the max" as it were (holy, more holy, most holy type of thing). So I can see the claim:

Quote:
777 is the number used to symbolize god.

having some validity in terms of Biblical meaning. Or at least having more significance than being nothing more than the number of axons, etc. But however Bungie interprets it is known only by them.

I did do a search and didn't find anything on it, as far as being two months late, all I can say is that I'm not suprised that this has already been mentioned.

As far as the disputing of my facts by DreamoftheRood, the difference is probably just a difference in faith. I was repeating off some highlights of a Catholic Bible school class from several years back, Baptist and other Christian faiths tend to take exerpts from the Bible at literal value, something that I don't agree with, but can't argue with either, so I guess neither of us can really be considered wrong in this case.

In any case this is old news. Perhaps locking would be the best choice for this forum.

Locky!

That, for some reason, made me laugh so hard I snorted. Thank you.

Can't comment on the 666 -- it has no significance in my beliefs.

<puts on kooky face>

But you are missing out on the deep significance of the number 777: the first verse of Genesis contains seven Hebrew words (count 'em: Bereshit bara Elohim et hashamayim v'et ha-aretz) and three names: G-d, heaven and earth. The sum of the gematria for those three names is 777! The secrets of the universe are clearly contained within this number!

(Okay, that was actually me doing a parody of people who try to find numerical codes in the Bible. My bubble bath has probably steam-cooked my brain. Return to your regularly scheduled [SPEC].)

Quote:

That's about as specific as you can get. Seven symbolizes a lot of things -- completeness, sanctity, perfection. The holiest of days (in the Hebrew calendar, anyway), Yom Kippur, is in the seventh month of the year. Noah takes seven pairs of clean animals on the ark. The Sabbath is the seventh day of the week. Samson loses his strength when Delilah cuts off seven locks of his hair. A menorah has seven branches. The world was created in seven days. Seven priests with seven trumpets at Jericho.

And so on. Generally, seven in the Bible is a sign that G-d is involved. You try and make it more specific than that, you start losing examples.

It's pretty widely accepted that when a man asked Jesus how many times he must forgive his neighbor--as many as seven times?--and Jesus answered "Not seven, but seventy times seven," he didn't really mean that the man must forgive his neighbor 490 times. He just meant "so many that you may as well not bother counting, and just forgive him always because he is your neighbor, a fellow child of God, and no less perfect than you. Love thy enemy and all that."
Of course, the fact is there are many different interpretations of the Bible anyway...some of the most devout Christians I know accept the story of Adam, Eve and Eden as nothing more than a fable.

Ummm... I don't mean to stifle anyone's beliefs here, but if someone replies to Platonix's comment in the wrong way, we could end up with a small holy war on the forum, something that no one needs. This whole thing is just a ticking time bomb for confrontation, which is why I requested the lock 3 posts up from here.

Think maybe we just leave this thread where it lies?

I can see why you would think that, but really, this is the most concise and civil religious discussion I've ever seen, sticking to the facts and never attacking another's beliefs. Applause all around for that.

If we ever see the signs of the discussion breaking down ("[insert denomination here] IS t3h SuX0R!!!") we may have cause for concern, but at present, the discussion has been notably warm and amiable.

But definitely, thanks for the "meta-moderation;" it's always good to know when someone is concerned.
