I'll take this one. I've made attempts to derail this thread, but I'm going to actually make a concerted effort to create a cogent response to this query.

Hi, this is actually Phaedra, not Kali -- I want to do something nifty with my 777th post, which this would be, but I did want to respond here..

Actually, I wanted to know what thebruce believed. But interesting nonetheless.

As a sidenote, I find it interesting that you leave the 'o' out of G-d. If I remember right, the ancient Hebrew alphabet didn't have letters for vowels; they just kinda mixed and matched their consonants to get vowel sounds. So, we've got no idea if YHWH extrapolates to Yahweh or Yowoah.

Mm. Nice try, but unfortunately you're wrong. Razz

Ancient Hebrew didn't have nikkud -- the Masorites invented those -- but the consonants weren't "mixed and matched" to get vowel sounds. There were no vowels, period, except for vav, which was actually pronounced waw at the time, and can be an "o" or "u" sound, and yod which can be an "i" sound. But the pronunciation was fairly carefully maintained and passed down. These are words, not just collections of letters, and the Name of G-d was part of the Yom Kippur rituals, so pronouncing it correctly was a Big Deal.

We can't completely be sure of the pronunciation of the Tetragrammaton, but we're fairly certain it's "Yahweh." We know, at least, that the first part is "Yah" because "Yah" is actually another name used for G-d in the Bible. Hebrew names frequently incorporate it. For example, Elijah is "Eliyahu" in Hebrew, which means "the Lord (Yah) is my G-d." ("El" is "G-d", -i is a first-person possessive suffix, and "Yah" is "G-d." Never mind about the -u for now.)

The reason I leave the O out has nothing to do with Hebrew vowels. If we're talking about G-d in Hebrew and we don't want to say "G-d", we don't leave out letters, we say "HaShem," which means "the Name." A lot of Jews write HaShem, rather than G-d, as well. The O is left out because of a prohibition against defacing the name of G-d. To err on the side of caution, many Jews simply don't write out the word, in case something should happen to the paper it's written on and the name inadvertently become defaced. And there are other reasons not to use the Tetragrammaton -- I don't call my father by his name, either. Most rabbis have ruled that it's okay to write it out in an electronic medium, however, but I continue to leave out the O both out of habit and as a reminder to be careful just how I invoke G-d.
