I can confirm the cards and starter pack V.2's are already in the Borders in Birmingham Very Happy that was quick.

Major props to Borders for being the first major chain to catch on.
When the U.S. deal breaks and Mind Candy can get a big marketing push over here, it's on!

EDIT: Thing is, never heard of 'em before, at least not on Long Island. Confused

Ermmm, haven't WHSmiths already said they'll carry them before? I seem to remember a few pages back.

Just a shame they don't sell em yet Sad

And, MC seems to be up for another award.

Pulled from the Gaming Report, Perplex City's up for the Diana Jones award.

Quote:
The Diana Jones Award for Excellence in Gaming was founded and first awarded in 2000. It is presented annually to the person, product, company, event or any other thing that has, in the opinion of its mostly anonymous committee of games industry luminaries, best demonstrated the quality of "excellence" in the world of hobby-gaming in the previous year. The winner of the Award receives the Diana Jones trophy.

Past winners include Peter Adkison, Jordan Weisman, the role-playing games Nobilis, Sorcerer and My Life with Master, and the board-game Ticket to Ride. This is the sixth year of the Award.

Honestly, I have absolutely no idea who'll win it, since they're all really good entries.

Who knew that ARGs could be reviewable before they even finished?

Perplex City Review, by JustAdventure.com

Along with the review itself, they give a mainstream-esque definition of an ARG. Random excerpts follow.

Quote:
Perplex City is an ARG (Alternate Reality Game). What is an ARG? It is the latest form of computer gaming. The is the next step in the evolution of Adventure games. It is what Adventure games have been all along.

Quote:
The other thing to distinguish an ARG is that it can only be played once in real-time (Reality does not repeat. Neither does it have a Save Game feature). So it needs to be played with as many people as possible. This allows for puzzles which are much too difficult for any individual, but are perfectly solvable for the Hive Mind.

Quote:
The people behind Perplex City spent two and a half years working on it. There are currently over 26,000 registered players playing it. There are puzzles for the individual via the cards and there are puzzles for the Hive Mind via the on-line real-time experience.

This is my first experience with ARGs, so I cannot say how innovative Perplex City is. But as a game critic I can tell you that the effort is spot on. It has been done right.

I am giving Perplex City an "A", not because it deserves a place on your shelf – it won't be around five years from now – but because you need to be playing it. NOW!

I think they *are* wrong! Rolling Eyes
Why else would MC call the 256 cards we're working on now, SEASON one? Shocked

Finally, and most intriguingly, we have Contact Magazine - which should have an article and a picture of the front cover - but the links are presently broken.
Contact Magazine, from what I can find, is a business-to-business marketing journal produced by Redwood Publishing for the Royal Mail. Mind Candy are pushing their marketing into new areas it would appear Smile

J

P.S. There's a rather lovely photograph from Clapham too, featuring (among others) Ollie and Dysper.

P.P.S. Links to the article and the cover of the magazine are now fixed, and can be found here and here. Thank'ee for fixing those Smile

If anyone wants an actual copy of this for their collection, I have nabbed one from work and will happily post it out to you..... Drop me an email.

Looks like pxc has hit the big time with this..
Well Done Mind Candy..now we need to make sure they stock them so we need lots of people to give feedback to say how wonderful those cards are!

Lets hope they do stock them because it would be SO convenient for me to just go in and get cards whenever I want.

Press Release

From a press release issued today comes another mention of the Borders agreement, but nothing new:
Quote:
Perplex City BORDERS on Finale

New Perplex City clues released in search for the £100,000 prize

LONDON, ENGLAND – May 13th, 2006 – Perplex City, the clever and intriguing multiplayer Alternate Reality Game (ARG), has launched a new wave of puzzle cards, partnering with the UK-wide Borders book chain to open the game to a mainstream consumer. To date the cards have been sold online and through hundreds of independent stores around the world, but now the game is opening up to a wider audience.

The penultimate wave of cards, launched this month, provides a host of new clues to enable players to find the Receda Cube, a stolen artefact from fictional world Perplex City. The cards also include a fresh stack of new puzzles to work on, leading the players towards the £100,000 prize.

Michael Smith, Co-founder and CEO of Mind Candy (the company behind Perplex City) said: "We're really excited to partner with Borders and think that there will be an excellent fit between the Perplex City brand and their existing audience. The new partnership opens the game up from early adopters to more mass market consumers".

In addition to the launch of the Wave 3 and a brand new Starter Pack, the creators behind the game have been extremely busy adding extra functionality to the hugely popular PerplexCity.com website. Players are now able to complete a comprehensive profile, upload photos, add tags showing their interests, as well as subscribe to regular updates. They are also able to sign-up to a fortnightly newsletter, informing them of their progress, as well as additional game events and key developments from within the city.

EDITORS NOTES:

The game so far:

In less than a year Perplex City, fondly known as PXC, has successfully blended real-life treasure hunting, interactive fiction, puzzle-solving, online communities, and live events in cities around the world to offer players the most intense interactive experience imaginable. At this very moment thousands of players from all over the world are all taking part in the biggest treasure hunt ever created.

In order to take part players purchase silver packs that contain six, cryptic puzzle cards. Ranging in difficulty from fun and easy to captivatingly complex, the wide range of unusual puzzles include beautifully crafted riddles, origami challenges, pop culture trivia, logical mindbenders, 3D mazes and Egyptian hieroglyphs. Once solved, they provide the player with their first clues to the location of the buried treasure. Players can enter their solutions online at www.perplexcity.com and receive a number of "Perplex Points," dependent on the difficulty of the card.

As players progress, they have the option of getting involved in an exciting story which plays out across a variety of media, from blogs and websites to text messages, coded newspaper adverts, and even skywriting. There have been live events in both New York and London, one even featuring a getaway by an in-game spy on a helicopter. The game has even gone so far as to have Perplex City book publisher, Seaside Press, make a player written novel, 'Stories From The Third Planet', available here on Earth. Players can even buy a music CD from Perplex City record label, Hesh, and listen to bi-weekly podcast enabling players to catch up on the latest goings-on from Perplex City whilst they're on the move. A group of several hundred players (and non players!) have also collaborated to donate their spare computing power to solving a complex encryption puzzle, called The 13th Labour.

This one contains the immortal phrase: "Damn you, Michael Smith. Damn you to hell."

Very nicely written article Smile
