request/suggestion to mods: can we not have this back in the perplex city meta forum? took me ages to find it here!

but anyway, this letter was in this months EDGE magazine (UK game industry mag). anyone wanna claim it?!

Quote:

Before raising the idea of investigating this issue, I realise that you mentioned in a previous issue the emerging aspects of Alternate Reality Games such as the BBC's Jamie Kane game. I feel, however, that a more in-depth look at these games should be given by your writers in a forthcoming issue, especially with online games such as Perplex City (www.perplexcity.com) providing new and potentially revolutionary ways of looking at the ways in which we engage with games. Perhaps even a glance at websites such as the Alternate Reality Gaming Network (www.argn.com) would suggest that the emergence of these games is perhaps a move into the mainstream, and that these games provide a level of interactivity unseen in other conventional formats.
Martin Hollis

Edge:
Interestingly, alternate reality gaming, despite being initially perceived as one of the 'geekier' offshoots of traditional gaming, is one that is drawing in many new players. Expect more coverage in the coming months.

They seem to be coming through on their word too, the website has already had a feature on the sin 2 game coming out in relation to some video game or other.

Can I second that? I thought this page had been deleted for no apparent reason! Or even just post a sticky in the PXC forum to notify people as to the whereabouts of this thread! Anyway, saw this in the Business section of the Observer yesterday:
Quote:
Hare grip

Hands up if you remember Masquerade, the children's book that became a national obsession long before Harry Potter. It triggered a treasure hunt for a golden hare that stretched minds and sanity - otherwise normal adults roamed meadows with metal detectors for three years before the mystery was solved and the treasure unearthed. A quarter of a century later and some new treasure has been buried, only this time it could be anywhere in the real or virtual world. Ahead of the official July launch, 25,000 people - not all of them geeks and half of them women - have joined the hunt to find the lost cube of PerplexCity. The reward is £100,000 and the clues are everywhere. The creator Michael Smith, 30, (the brains behind the Firebox web retailer and backed by private equity firm Index Ventures) once watched his parents dig for the golden hare and has wanted to create a global treasure hunt ever since. 'Nine of us have worked on this for two years,' he says. 'We do not think there is a human being alive who could solve this puzzle on their own.' PerplexCity even has its own bank, PCBC, and a newspaper. Wannabe journalists are already at work contributing their columns. Wannabe chief executives should apply to the bank.

And a follow up bit of Press at Edge Online

Alternative Alternative Reality Gaming
Today, 01:23
Alternative Reality Gaming (ARG) has taken an interesting turn, after confirmation from the makers of Perplex City that the game is a completely stand-alone project rather than a glorified commercial. Until now, the real world-based games have either been home-grown amateur efforts, or promotional material for large companies. The previously most prominent game, I Love Bees, was eventually revealed to be a marketing build-up to the launch of Halo 2. Others have unveiled themselves as advertising for companies such as Stella Artois, BMW or movies like Spielberg's AI.
The people behind Perplex City, London-based Mind Candy, told Wired.com that they intend to fund their $200,000 prize for the person who discovers the game's missing cube through the sale of game cards that will help players get closer to the answers. Mind Candy's CEO Michael Smith explained that the $5 packs will further integrate the web-based game into the players' real lives.

The reason we think this works is that the game is very sociable. You can take the cards with you to the pub or do them at work on your lunch break.

Perplex City has been running for a couple of months already, but the game will start proper over the next few weeks as the cards go on sale around the world. Packs are available at £2.50 each from PlayLounge on Beak Street in Soho.

For more information on ARGs and their current incarnations, check www.argn.com.

So no pressure Mind Candy, then.

Small article in the Guide section of today's (23/07/05) Guardian, Page 30:

The Guardian wrote:

In the 1980s, Kit Williams' book Masquerade contained clues to a treasure hunt that would lead the successful reader to dig up a jewelled sculpture of a rabbit for his or her trouble. This century things are a little more convoluted, and when Mind Candy Design decided to bring the opportunity to win £100,000 to the attention of a jaded public, it did so in the form of the mysterious Perplex City. Using a series of cryptic messages sent by post and online, it leads players into the mystery of a missing cube, the recovery of which will bring your reward. As an Alternate Reality Game (that's ARG, acronym fans), the solution is scattered around websites, blogs and tems in the real world. Begin your search at www.perplexcity.com. NG

this is followed by a picture of a sticker on a tree next to a rather gothic building. No scanner I'm afraid. Smile

[UPDATE][PRESS] Mind Candy Press/Guardian, July 27

I did not notice this elsewhere, but the Mind Candy Design website has a minor update to its press section, which includes a link to a Guardian blog/article that I had not yet seen.

http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/games/archives/2005/07/26/perplexed.html

[EDIT: merged with the newly reborn Press thread. yanka.]

From the Edition of Stuff Magazine UK released in July
Quote:
CANDY SAYS
Mind Candy's Perplex City is a brilliant new alternate reality game - get hold of a pack of cards from www.firebox.com, and get sucked in to a world of cryptic clues and mind-bending puzzles with buried treasure prizes totalling £100, 000. Check www.perplexcity.com
The bit that interests me is the last bit. BURIED TREASURE PRIZES TOTALLING. THis implies that there is more than one thing buried, and the things are worth money in themselves, and it's not a reward.

Then again, how many times has the press incorrectly reported on ARGs? I'm thinking of the ILB article talking about "the Melissa" - I'm not saying it's definitely wrong, but I wouldn't put too much stock in it.
