Signup cgi script on main page

I don't know if this will bring up more information, or is just a waste of time...but I was wondering if anyone had managed to download the cgi script that signs up your e-mail address. I have tried and not succeeded, it redirects downloads to thanks.html. The reason I want to see what is inside the cgi script is that, it doesn't seem to actually do anything. If you type in any jibberish it will still redirect you to the thanks.html file.

Another thing i tried yesterday...which brought up nothing....unfortunately...was to try and see if there were any directories with the missing e strings as the names. Tne first ten digits (first string) are missing from the log files, but it is the name of one of the directories.....so it followed logic, my logic anyway, that other directores could be named after the missing strings...oh well.

Please don't try and do this. Although it's not totally and utterly unallowed (like hacking), it does bend several of the ARG Commandments, mainly numbers 8 and 3.

I fully understand the frustration of sitting around waiting for this to kick off, but I don't feel that digging around for meta information is productive. There is also the potential that we'll be ruining our own surprises (I say this further to my response in this thread).

And in keeping with the tenth commandment, welcome to Unfiction SasunD Smile

Yeah, I don't think the script actually processes the information you give it at all, it probably just adds whatever you type in to a list, it probably checks that it's in a proper email address format first [hmm maybe the PMs will do this later], and then directs you to thanks.html regardless.

I even tried putting in senteSPLATperplexcity.com, senteSPLATprojectsyzygy.com, and also dinahSPLATprojectsyzygy.com, along with a couple of other variants, to try and get a different response but they all just redirected to thanks.html
My guess is that there is nothing 'secret' hidden there.

I'm somewhat confused by the whole 'e' thing, the only real reason I can see for it is for us to work out which order the cache files should be read in, but this does not explain the missing strings. Another question I've been thinking about is whether or not the fact that the number was 'e' in the first place is significant or not. e is one of the more common numbers in mathematics so maybe it was simply a puzzle to establish the cache order, or maybe it will lead onto something else? Who knows.

as was mentioned long ago the missing numbers seem to be subject separaters

I just thought that the script is very weird, why is it there if it does nothing? Wouldn't it have been easier for them to just make the press of the button forward you to thanks.html. The script doesn't actually do anything, it doesn't even check to see if you put in real e-mail addresses or just jibberish, therefore, I'm thinking that whoever put their e-mail addresses are not going to get anything back...

unless....the script is another test..it could be that it looks for a keyword that no one has thought of and then redirects to a different page once the right word has been entered...

anyway, its probably nothing, but by dismissing small seemingly insignificant things, we might miss something out.

Maybe its logging in your ip address, which is your REAL information it wants?

We don't know that it does nothing. It's very simple to write a script that writes everything that is input to a file and then forwards the user. The PMs could then go over it by hand as has been suggested above.

why put in email checking regexes if you don't have too, almost everybody who actually enters something will give a valid address.

Actually, if it was me, I'd have a second program use the data saved by this one. The second program would check for each entry received if they are valid e-mail addresses (and skip over duplicates, and possibly any e-mail that the PMs want to use during the game, such as perplexSPLATcity.com) and send an e-mail to the remaining entries... WHEN they will kick the hunt off Smile

Just to point out that they don't necessarily have to go through the entries by hand !

You've gotta bear in mind that we have a lot more time on our hands than the PMs to think about this sort of stuff.....

The PMs are gearing up to start the game - I imagine they've got a lot on their plate right now without setting up elaborate email-checking scripts and progs, especially when they could hire a temp to do it for them for about £35 per day (seriously - I used to temp and I've done jobs this lousy for that sort of pay). My money says it's just a simple script that appends every entry onto a text file to leave a big list of players.

How many entries are there gonna be anyway? It's a pretty safe assumption that most serious players are gonna end up at this forum so even if there's a lot of lurkers it's still gonna be under 1000 entries I'd guess. A temp could go through deleting the dud addresses in that list in a day or two no problem.

Frankly, I don't think there's anything else to find out there ATM. They might add more cache files or something at some point but unless anything changes I'm not gonna try to dig any deeper for now (don't wanna catch a glimpse of Oz by mistake Wink ).
