Mmm, panini Smile

I'm glad this is all behind us; I didn't have much faith in this to begin with. ALMOST reserved optimism...not quite, though Wink

Panini

A traditional small Italian sandwich that is pressed and grilled so that the bread has a golden crust on both sides of the sandwich. Typically, the sandwich is filled with a variety of ingredients such as meats, cheeses, roasted bell peppers, roasted egg plant, sweet basil, sun-dried tomatoes, and other similar sandwich fillings.

Very nice!

Muffin, don't take it personal,
but being Italian.... I must point this out for the greater good:

panini is the plural of panino

Ever since I moved to the States I found that people simply use 'panini' even when referring to a single sandwich.

...oh, and here's another tip:
there is absolutely nothing special about a panino. It is the Italian word used to refer to a sandwhich. So, a good dictionary should say that
panino is Italian for sandwhich.
Anything else they say about it is American marketing infiltrating culture (and that is a sad thing.)

Yeah, well, unless webslinger is *not* interested in ARG stuff Smile
In that case, what (s)he thinks is a timewaster might be *incredibly* interesting to us...
...all in all, though, I agree: this is probably off track and someone made a quick 21 q's from it Smile

I didn't know that! Don't worry, I don't take it personally - it did make me laugh though!

So what do Italians call a toasted sandwich? Having said that, on my recent honeymoon in Rome and Sorrento, there were plenty of signs advertising Panini's which on purchase turned out to be toasted sandwichs Smile

Anyway, nice bit of trivia

I find it hard to believe that WebSlinger (whoever you are...) actually handed over any money for an object that someone else wants. At least I sincerely hope that no-one connected to these here boards would ever be so stupid...

"Toasted Sandwich" could be "Panino Caldo" (i.e. "hot sandwhich"), or just "toast" (yeah, we use foreign words Smile. The difference would then be based on the type of bread. "toast" are sandwiches made with your common square sliced bread; "panini caldi" are usually made with other type of bread.

Yes, "Panini" signs are very common in Italy, but they don't necessarily refer to toasted or hot sandwiches Smile

BTW, Rome is *sooo* cool, but I've never been in Sorrento.

Ok, next I think we should move this to some alt.forum.italian.rants forum Smile

Cheers,
F.O.R.

Well! You learn something new every day (concerning the panino/panini dispute)!

Still, I stick by my statemen: "Mmm, panini" Wink

Yeah I seem to remember someone mentioning that being an ISBN.
Also, I don't think the person who won the auction handed over any money either, probably just didn't get any emails or contact from the seller once the auction ended.
