I think, just for that, joebrent has to do stand-up at ARG-Fest-O-Con.

I know I'll be using some of those puns in casual conversation Smile

suggestions

Quote:
Btw, I think rose has some kind of list of suggestions or something, so if anyone wants to have these... um, activities... take place in July, you can probably talk to her to see if they can be added

heh, the wiki is open for anyone... but don't these people like to find each other privately Wink

not that I would know anything about that...um, look a distraction...

Uhm, it's illegal to suggest traveling for the purpose of any, uhm, inappropriate activities that might arise from a 3-some, if any potential participant is under the age of 18.

ARGFest = sightseeing, socializing, drinkering (if over 21), computers, but no "pron".

On the other hand - I'll be looking to share room expenses, and traveling without konashark, and over 18. Wink

I am sure that no one is suggesting that anything illegal occur at ARGFest or planning any illegal activity.

While we are still putting together our own guide, people eager to learn more about the city might try

this lonely planet guide

First off, we wouldn't dream of anything illegal going on at Argfest Wink

Ok back to why I was posting here, another place to look for hotels is hotels dot com. They have a pretty good list and some deals already. I can't afford a pricey hotel, I have to buy a new jeep for work. That's cutting into the vacation money. I've found a few that won't totally break what's left in the bank, so that there's drinkering money available.

A room with a nice balcony is a great idea. I loved the room in Vancouver, all of us would have fit on it with no problems!

Light, how I would love to attend something like this.... Shame I have no transportation from Nova Scotia to New York...and probably no free-time around the dates that have been set...and no money for accomodations....

Straight to the point! Maybe use this for one side of the shirt, and a puzzle on the other?

Speaking of puzzles? Will there be a pre-ARGFest internet puzzle?

more room choices

I've done some more research and I am looking into rates and group rates at the following places- they should be less than the Hotel Pennsylvania, at least enough to make a difference

My favorite:

La Quinta Inn Mahattan - good location for our general vacinity, Sky Bar - roof bar facilitating a meeting spot for us and, supposedly spacious rooms - remember in NY spacious means closet elsewhere.

www.applecorehotels.com

Then there is:

Mayfair Hotel - another good location, family run hotel. Note: this is not the "mayflower hotel" - which is the very posh hotel made famous years ago as the location of the "Mayflower Madame"

www.mayfrny.com

Upper West Side

Amsterdam Inn - may be more expensive than these, but I am checking with group rates, no elevator so be prepared to carry your stuff up the steps. No restaurant technically in the hotel, but there are about 10 within a half a block.

www.amsterdaminn.com

Downtown we have:
Cosmopolitan Hotel -Lower Manhattan is not my first choice, but I want to check the rates for us.

www.cosmohotel.com

And, finally:
Westside YMCA - Note: this is not the YMCA which inspired the Village People's song. There are some rooms with private baths and you get to use the gym and pools while you are there - my son took some swimming lessons here and it is an OK facility.

www.ymcanyc.org

Sorry I haven't been able to finalize the rate information yet - but I hope to do that today. Take a look at these guys and let me know what you think. Smile

PS. I will be updating the website wiki with this info as well.

PPS. PreARG puzzles are an excellent idea... any volunteers for organizing them can PM me, bagsbee, Sin Vraal or Anthrax or joebrent (actually being a NYC person is not needed to do this task).... I know there has been some talk about this already.... I suspect that I will not be the person in charge of this but I am reluctant to volunteer anyone else.

Reminder/Getting Real about a social area for us.

Unless somebody intends to get a giant suite for mega bucks in some hotel, I don't think we can count on having anyone with a room large enough to accommodate a group of any size for socializing. We got lucky in Vancouver when Greywolf got a free upgrade because her room was not available. A larger group in NYC may not be able to improvise like that.

Short of renting a meeting room someplace (again an expense we may not be able to commit everyone to in advance), I suspect our best bet will be to identify a restaurant for a specific evening (or one each evening) that has a separate eating area that they will let us take over if we bring a certain number of people. Just as an example (some people think this is a tourist trap but the food is great) - we could take over a bunch of tables in the north end of Ruby Foo's near Times Square, if we gave them enough notice or got there a little before the dinner rush. Plenty of room for any size crowd we might muster (again with enough notice). And out of the way (mostly) of other restaurant patrons. Wide range of prices on the menu so everyone can stay in their comfort zone budget-wise.

That's just a suggestion, and totally exhausts my knowledge of midrange restaurants, but I toss to the NYC crowd for further elaboration if you all are interested.

ruby foos

Aliendial: I like Ruby Foos as a choice. I think that may be a great choice for Friday evening. People may view it as a tourist trap, but I don't. The food is great and the Ruby Foo cocktail may be the smoothest drink I've ever tasted.

As for meeting places, we are working on that as well - the problem we face at the moment is the difficult to answer question "how many people will be here."

But as I mentioned, I am not really concerned about sorting that out for a couple of months. I know that may be disconcerting to out of town visitors but we have access to several locations - I can get conference space through the Bar Association, I have a friend who has a restaurant we could take over for not much more than the cost of food, we could even use the party room in the basement of a friend's building, joe and I both have access to some theater space.. so we aren't without resources.
We can get conference space at the Hotel Pennsylvania -which would be great if a group stays there.

I'm still working on the group rates at other places and the wiki.

Probably tough to arrange group rates until rose knows exactly how many people are coming. Please sign in at http://deaddrop.us/wiki/index.php?title=Who_is_going_to_be_here%3F&action=edit as soon as you know.

Ruby Foo's sucks.
