That's hilarious. I'm beginning to feel sorry for his cacti.

I have also found this place. They have 2-bedroom suites; I called them, and it seems that they are having a special rate of $439/night (plus tax is $506.41) for Jul. 22 - Jul. 25th. According to them, those suites sleep "up to 6 people", but, again, I can see how 8-10 desperate ARGers can bend those rules a little. Plus, we could probably use that place as a central party location, in which case we could all chip in to share the costs. That 2-bedroom suite even has a kitchen. Just another idea...

ARGFest hotels: chat Thursday Feb.17 10:00pm channel TBA

Lodging
I think it would help us with the planning if we had a chat to talk about issues relating to lodging and any other ARGfest issues.

Let's make it Thursday night at 10:00pm

I have two concerns:
1. If people are staying in many different locations, it will become a logistical nightmare. I am not just concerned about people getting lost - many people like Diandra, Ms_Gwyn and Addlepated have been here before - and, for those who haven't been we can set up some sort of "buddy system" with one of the local hosts.
I am bearing in mind SpaceBass's sage counsel that moving a group anywhere can be problematic, I think he said it took an hour to get a group to move from a bar to a restaurant at the ARGfest in Orlando.
We will benefit from having a central locus in other ways as well.

2. Number of people- I think that as the ARGFest date gets closer and as we announce our schedule of events, people will be want to be here. We already have a list of people who are certain to attend. A number of people are on the fence. Others feel that July is just to far away to think about yet.

Costs

I wanted to point out that we have done no fundraising for ARGFest at all. I know that we will be able to raise money which will help to defray the costs of events.

Hi,

I haven't really been active in this thread, and I really have to get up to speed on all the info in it, but as it looks more and more like I will be able to make it to NYC this summer, the "lodging problem" is one that keeps me occupied most. I agree that being spread all over NY would be pretty much inconvenient, and as I am not familiar with the city at all, it would be nice for me personally to find some place which is, let us say, "strategically well placed".

The problem is that 10pm thursday evening is in the middle of the night for me, which is not very convenient, so I would appreciate it when someone could log the chat for me! Maybe one of the resident New Yorkers could point me in the right direction or give me some hints afterwards...

someone just screwed up the wiki's front page with spam and I deleted it.

We may want to lock some of these pages

and the main page info will have to be added again.

I also found another hotel (Rose knows about it), On The Ave (http://www.ontheave-nyc.com/main.htm), 77th & Amsterdam (upper west side)....they are running a winter special for $179 and that amount applies to july.

ARGFEST UPDATE: GROUP RATES FOR HOTEL

About group rates- If you don't know where you are staying yet, go here

In our chat on Thursday, we decided that the best way to proceed with a group rate at a hotel is for people to sign up if they are interested. Each hotel has a minimum number of guests that they require before they can give a group rate. Someone, most likely me, has to sign a contract with the hotel specifying the number of rooms we will need. So we need a count preferably by the end of March. Signing up on the wiki is not an unbreakable commitment. We need to gauge interest. Please note whether you want a single, double (without a roommate), double ( with a roommate) or a triple.

Click here for the Group Rate sign-up

About finding a roommate - if you are willing to share a room, go here

Diandra set up the roomate finder. Please use it. As she said so eloquently in a post above:
Quote:
Some people I've spoken to say they'd love to come to ARGFest, but they could use a roommate to help defray costs. If this describes your situation, we'd love to see you there, so please make use of the roommate finder page just added to the wiki.

About other hotels- if you have made your own plans, go here.

We have a number of places recommended on the wiki. People may choose to stay wherever they like, but it will be much easier to keep people at least in the same general area. We will make schedules with directions, etc. But, as I mentioned I want to avoid a logistical nightmare!!
----
To help sort this out we have set up two tools:

1. The "Where We Are" page on the wiki. Post where you are staying if you want that information to be public.
Click here to go to the Where We Are page.

2. Diandra is also keeping the confidential master list for us. (thanks Diandra) The information she needs is on the same wiki page I linked above.
Please PM her here with your hotel information, even if you post on the wiki. That way she will be able to make sure she has a complete list.

EVENTS AND SCHEDULE

In addition to lodging we are working on a schedule.

Please read our ideas and post what you are interested in doing
on this possible group activities page

And please post comments about the schedule

on this Schedule page

About the wiki: editing is very easy- just click the edit button at the top of the page. Do not indent what you type. You can preview what you type and then save. It is that easy. If you don't feel comfortable doing that, then post here in this thread.

I've edited the discussion page to include some great places to pee and also start a poker/billiards thing happening.

Hadn't been to the wiki in a while, kinda surprised at the number of people who are coming, including pm's. Sweet, the more the merrier, wot I say.

This is actually a great idea. While NYC tourism in general is up, demand for suites is low, so you can get really good deals on them, especially if they are off the beaten path (i.e. not in Times Square). You may also want to check out Southgate Tower - it's also an Affinia property, they all have pretty much the same prices, and the location is better. I got a suite at the Beekman last year for a, er, party, and I can vouch for the size, we could've housed a battallion in there.

For anyone going to NY from the Portland, Oregon area......Jet Blue is opening up a route nonstop to JFK. From what I understand they will start flying out of Portland sometime in May, with a $99 fare each way. About the only thing they don't offer on thier flights is food.

Plenty of carryon food available from the airport food courts.
Jet Blue also offers that $99 fare from Las Vegas.

No age limit. Hopefully there will be something for all ages. However I must strongly urge under-18s coming to the city for the first time to liberally rely on the locals.

For a big city, it's very easy to find your way around, and it bears repeating that it is absolutely safe 24/7. But I'll post my cell number somewhere on the wiki in case anyone has any questions at any time just in case, whether it be about directions, restaurant/bar recomendations, anything. Don't worry about bugging me, better to do that than end up lost in the Bronx, performing unspeakable acts for bus fare.

Follow the link above and scroll to the bottom for my cell#. Just don't hack me or anything, I'll be very upset if those photos of me and Lindsey Lohan ever got out.

For the super-budget-conscious: there is, apparently, something called Gershwin Hotel, which has some sort of dormitory setup (I can't figure out if it's 4 or 10 beds per room, though). Anyway, Expedia is having a $32 deal on that Shocked . I'm not sure that direct links to Expedia pages work, but you should be able to find it by going to Expedia, and searching for "Gershwin" (after you've selected New York as your city, though) in the "Hotel name, hotel class" option box.

Good grief. Yes everyone is welcome, no age limits, but let's be clear. No unaccompanied minors! If you are under 18 you are welcome with a parent or guardian.
