Beer Gardens in Astoria?

That's walking distance from my house. Awesome place in the summertime. Hoegaarden on tap....mmmmmmmmm.

I have already located a place that serves a good brunch with unlimited mimosas and bloody mary's, for those interested in that sort of thing.

Would you be thinking of Candela Restaurant, on 16th St. right off of Union Square? It's also unlimited screwdrivers. I've taken full advantage there before. Great place.

I look forward to bagsbee's primer on NYC (though I doubt he will have anything about my neighborhood in there).

It'll be more of a "tips & tricks" for NYC more than about specific places, there are loads of sites that do that already.

As for Ground Zero, that is still a tough one for me, but I have been there a bunch of times in the past few months so I definitely think I can make a trip there with anyone who wants to go. Somehow just looking at the ugly hole in the ground/construction site that is there doesn't really convey the story.

I don't mind going, but I, along with most New Yorkers, don't understand the fascination. *shrug*

Now, a mini ARG, well, dang, do we need a curtain or not?[that is not a rhetorical question, but it requires a META answer so someone else can advise.] I would think it is safe to assume that some sort of puzzle/game or various combinations thereof, online and off will be in the offing....

Yes, curtain. When danman_d called us out of nowhere during our MU reunion-mini-ARG-fest-o-Con, it was very cool, mainly because we weren't expecting it (props, dan!)

I'm In

I'm in for NYC - but I would like to throw hat in ring to help with the Chicago gig (obvious reasons).

Oh man

Please push the date back until after July 25th, then I'll be able to drink with everyone!

But seriously, I am really excited about this. I live/go to school in NYC, so this is hella easy for me. I kinda don't get what the format is going to be, is there going to be a central location, like a hotel or something for the con? An easy (and free) place to meet for a smaller group is always a Barnes and Noble or similar location. I also feel like we should have panels. Panels are fucking great. We could have ones on codebreaking, PMing, etc, all sorts of cool stuff to dork over for hours on end.

Also I have a lot of experience with convention life from attending anime cons over the years, so if any help is needed in the planning let me know.

NYC - Primer

New York City - A Primer

NYC is unlike most other cities in the US, and not just because of it's size. Here's a few tips and tricks that will help you maximize your pleasure:

- DON'T RENT A CAR. You can get pretty much anywhere you want much more quickly and cheaply by subway, bus or taxi. As much as the natives slam it, Mass Transit is actually very good in NYC. And taxis charge per ride, not per person, so cab rides can be very economical if you travel in a group.

- Dont believe the hype, crime is way down in NYC in recent years. The biggest thing to be careful of is pickpockets, they can spot an out-of-towner at a thousand yards in high winds. Always be aware of your surroundings.

- Airport preference, best to worst: LaGuardia, JFK, Newark, Islip. It's worth the extra $30 to fly into LGA rather than NWK, because you'll easily spend more than that travelling to/from Manhattan.

- NYC in July es muy calienté, don't let the higher latitude fool you. It ranges from "quite comfortable" to "heat wave". And it's not that dry SoCal or Arizona heat, it's practically sub-tropical. Dress appropriately.

- IMHO, the only "must see" in NYC is Times Square at night. It is a sight to behold. Everything else is a matter of preference. Oh and most museums are closed on Mondays.

- Smoking - As of March 2003 there is no smoking in any indoor locations: bars, restaurants, etc. (although you can get smoking hotel rooms). Non-smokers love it, smokers either hate it or get used to it. Also, cigarettes are very expensive here, sometimes upwards of $7.50 a pack. Plan accordingly.

- Alcohol - Bars close at 4am. You don't buy beer at liquor stores, you buy it at convenience stores, supermarkets or bodegas. Liquor stores are closed on Sundays. And you cannot (legally) buy any type of alcohol anywhere between 4am - 12pm on Sundays (blue law). The more you know...

- Don't ever buy jewelry/designer bags/etc off the street. It is always fake, no matter how authentic it looks. It seems like such a no-brainer, but I've seen loads of out-of-towners not heed this advice, and get ripped off. Only buy it if it's so cheap that you don't care if it's fake.

- There are lots of homeless people in NYC. And crazy people. And crazy homeless people. They are (almost always) harmless. Also, NYC is not exactly the cleanest place...and the subways smell funny. Pointing it out won't make it better, and might rile up the natives.

- Contrary to popular belief, New Yorkers are friendly people. We just have a built-in defense mechanism that can make us seem very rude or cold on first contact. Once you get to know us we're some of the nicest people you'll ever meet Very Happy

That's it for now...

a few things

For the record -

I don't know anyone who has ever been pickpocketed here, and some of my relatives are about as clueless as a tourist could possibly be.

One tip to avoid looking tourist-like: you can cross the street as long as the light is green. Look at the traffic light, even though the little "don't walk" man is blinking, you can still start to cross the street as long as the light is green. There is a built in "jaywalking" factor.

We can guide you about where to go and how safe it is-- I go to the South Bronx and am perfectly safe, but I know when to go.. we can make sure that you are fine here in Manhattan

Every place has air conditioning, even the cabs. Subway platforms are the only exception I can think of.

As for must sees, I am an active fan of musuems and the theater so I would recommend visiting at least the Metropolitan Musuem of Art. (Although the newly reopened MOMA is pretty amazing but expensive for non-members).

A little known fact is that the MMA admission fee is a "suggested" amount, you can give them a dollar and still get in. So pay what you feel comfortable with. You won't be cheating, the policy is designed that way to encourage people to visit. Also, they are open on Friday and Saturday evenings and music is played. It's a nice not too crowded time to go, the museum closes at 8:45pm so you still have all night to go out.

Also, Central Park is a must see. Lots of people like the Shakespeare Garden and Strawberry Fields.

I think the Statue of Liberty is a must see as well. You don't have to go to Liberty Island though, a round trip on the Staten Island Ferry goes pretty close and is free. Plus you can visit the famous spot where bagsbee sang "golden slumber" to Melissa. Lower Manhattan has lots of music events downtown during the summer and I will post the options when I find the updated calender.

Well, expect to be hosting an extremely long distance visitor. I'm planning, and definitely hoping, to be in NYC that weekend, and maybe head down to DC with the DC boys, and spend some time there...

.. so you'll have your very own Kiwi for a few days. I'm about a third of the way through the fund raising process, and I'll keep you guys updated. Getting fired from my (admittedly awful) job today isn't helping, but I have a few sources I can quickly get money from if I need to, so no need to worry just yet...

... whee? Very Happy

Even though I haven't played much this year, but I'd still like to go. Anyone know where they might be staying and/or where a good place might be to stay?

Anyone who wants to can crash at my place. Also I was thinking it might be cool to rent a suite at some hotel like the Plaza or maybe one in Times Square.

Addition to the primer:

- Always plan on spending a little more than you think you will. Cab fares, subway fares, litle things, all that stuff adds up, and then suddenly you realize, "hey, I just got a slice and a coke, how did I end up down 30 bucks...oh, yeah..."

So budget about 10-20% more than you think you'll actually spend. You'll end up breaking about even, if you're lucky.

Also, the east side sucks.

NYC in 05 - Chicago in 06

I am still in and down for NYC in 05, but I do need to know WHERE I am going. Flight is an easy thing, where oh where to stay, that is a completly different story.

As for ARG-06 - Put me down as host and (at least one of ) the "play" makers for that one.

Sorry, been quiet, but not gone.

So sad that I cannot attend, but next year, at ARG-O-CON-FEST-FANTASIA-SUMTHIN FIVE, "The Awakening" or whatever it is decided to be called... I'm all up for it here in Chi-town.

I'm in a suburb, but the city is less than half an hour away, and that's in medium traffic. I'm not like a city guru or anything, but I know my way around the brew and view, as well as some great cheap places to see some great rock, as well as the standard tourist fare... so anyway, just putting up my bid to be there in 2006, stinking it up along with the smelly bunch of ya that also live here in the Chicagoland area...

Have fun in NYC, everyone! I'll be there in my mind! (oh wait, I'm not even here in my mind... oh dear... Laughing )

Since I have yet to hear any objections, let's set it in stone now:

Friday, July 22nd - Sunday, July 24th, 2005

I would certainly encourage you to spend a couple extra days before or after those dates or even a week if you can, there is no possible way to run out of things to do in NYC. I'll be taking a couple days off work to play tour guide if anyone needs, and I believe joebrent is pretty much free as well (again, there I go volunteering Joe).

As a little teaser...yes, there are some surprises in store, no, you can't have any hints, and no, you don't want to miss it Very Happy Cool

tour guide

I am planning on acting as a tour guide too. We(I) will be putting together a list of possible places to stay, etc. within the next couple of weeks as well as some other guide stuff. Stay tuned.

ps joebrent - I know you hate the east side but some of us actually live there...
