Cabs. Won't be cheep from the airport, but at night that's what I would do.
Another possibility - a van/shuttle service. Not scheduled buses, but vans that take reservations and take a group of passengers heading to the same general area. Normally cheaper than a cab.
edit: Here's one: http://www.supershuttle.com/htm/cities/nyc.htm
and another: http://www.airlinknyc.com/
and the site I got that from said the airport cab fare is a flat rate of $45 plus tolls. (http://www.panynj.gov/aviation/jgtsmain.htm) Also an estimate of 40-60 minutes to get to midtown by cab. So plan accordingly.

cabs Just to be clear the fixed taxi rate for the airport of $45.00 only applies to JFK - not all the airports. Also - that rate doesn't include the tolls.
I know that SuperShuttle is good and should take you to any address. I need to check the rate from JFK - but if ifor two people it is close to $45 you should just take a cab. The cab stand is easy to use.

Hi - I'm immensely interested in attending, but won't be able to unless I can room with someone, as I can't afford to reserve a room at the moment. Is there anyone with extra space? I'm a small person, very quiet, heavy sleeper
Is there someone I should contact? Rose? Diandra?

transportation I went with the super shuttle, they were cheaper than a taxi.
Thanks AD and Rose!

Fastest, but most expensive, most people reported ~$50 plus toll to JFK.
Cheap, but not direct, took longer than desireable for those who used this service. Drove them all over the city dropping people off in different places.
Shared with others but well organized and $16-17 ea way. 30 min trip to the airport (non-rush hour). While dropping off others, all destinations were in close proximity - no wasted time.

Mine wasn't too bad to/from LaGuardia. Each way it cost $40 and that was with a tolls and a pretty nice tip.

cabs For future reference cabs to and from JFK - which is a bit of a hike from the city have a fixed cost of $45
Quote:
Flat Fare is $45 to the first destination (plus tolls and tip). The taximeter and receipt should relfect that this trip is a flat fare. There is no $1 peak time or 50-cent night surcharge for these trips.*
I know Chippy took the airtrain easily - but I know people who had lots of trouble with that option.

Just for perspective:
The M60 from Laguardia to Lafayette Ave then the number 3 to Penn station. $2
About a 1 hour trip during Friday rush hour.
I wouldn't do it at night though.

I feel pretty comfortable with the subways now and would probably go that route, except late at night. We took a cab back to the airport and wished we would have taken one from the airport. The cabbie was great, he gave us all kinds of information that you can't get anywhere else (except the locals). The next time we come to NY and there will be a next time, we'll take a cab.
Curtis had such a good time this last weekend that it won't be hard to get him back there again

I took the train from Penn Station to Newark on the way back. It only took 35 minutes, including changing to the monorail thing at Newark Airport Station that takes you to the check-in desks. An easy option, and it only cost $14, compared to $60 in a cab (apparently so expensive because the drivers have to go into another state).
Although, I do agree with greywolf that you get great insider info on a place from the cabbies!

yep. airtrain to jfk was quite painless. ride the subway to jamaica and transfer to airtrain. seemed to take a while, though, the full journey - about 50mins.
