I can help out anyone who needs something too. My tour guide abilities are somewhat limited to the ability to read a subway map however Wink

I'm probably mostly useful as a tour guide for touristy stuff during the day, but then more for the >21 crowd at nights.

I'm definitely, considering going, Curtis said he would come too if he can go to the Letterman show. I guess he wants to see Dave up close and personal.

In Vancouver with all of us at the same hotel it was really nice. Of course, my room upgrade helped alot. I think everyone should try and stay at the same hotel or as close as possible. I know that some budgets can't afford a pricey hotel and maybe if enough of us go together we can get a group rate somewhere.

I get a big hotel discount through my union, that's definitely something worth considering. Also rental cars, if anyone's crazy enough to rent a car in NYC.

Y'all gotta stop having threads about gatherings all over this forum, man!

OK, so I am planning on going, unless I get into some show or something, OK?

Alrighty then.

Well, if I make the reservations, it shouldn't matter, so long as whatever hotel we stay at doesn't find out that a million people are crashing in the same room, and we don't do anything Keith Moon-ish, like park a car in the swimming pool.

As always, many more people can likewise crash at my uptown apartment, so long as you don't mind the whole sleeping bag thing. Floor space is plentiful, but couch space would be at a premium. I do, however, have a nice view of the Hudson (the clean one, not the infamous East River which is full of hospital waste and cement shoes) and easy midtown access via the famous A Train.

Sing Ellington tunes at your own risk. That goes for my apartment as well.

I'm likely to pick a hotel around the theater district. I have one I like but it's not particularly cheap. Easy walk to the TV Studios (does MTV stilll do TRL from the studio on Times Square?) and big store shopping. But if anyone knows of a nice safe clean mid-price hotel anywhere between Penn Station and Central Park, that might be nice. I spose the Village would be OK too (streets pretty safe at night?) but I know even less about that area.

We were in the city in 2000 and originally stayed at the Gramercy Park Hotel, but it was so terrible (things like, our room stank of rodent pee) that we fled and moved to Le Parker Meridien near Central Park. It was a really nice place, and I think they have significant discounts on the weekends. Very convenient location.

Yes, TRL still operates out of Times Square, which means I try to avoid it like the plague to stay away from all the shrieking teens. There are several hotels in the Chelsea area, which is on the west side between 14th and 34th, and of course many more in the Times Square area and along Central Park South, including the historic Plaza, which I recommend, no matter when cynical New Yorkers say about it. And the Soho Grand is my favorite hotel in NYC, but that's way down off Canal Street, about a 10 minute subway ride from midtown.

Where oh where to stay?????

As a confirmed "Chicago-er" I have no idea where to stay nor where the "safe zones" are in NYC. Looking at MS Streets and Trips I could pick from a zillion hotels . . . and probably get killed at most of them Wink

Help would be appreciated - hell just pick a general area that has a range and I would be willing to select from there.

I also have no clue about the "areas" you are talking about - mid-town etc. Help this feeble Chicago boy so he doesn't get his proverbial ass kicked in the big city.

I promise to do a ton of research when this moves to Chicago in 06, just help me to live that long.

HA

places to stay

Of course we will help you find places to stay. In fact, I hope to get a wiki guide for ARGFest ocon going this week which will contain a list of recommended spots as well as many other helpful tips. Bill has cheerfully agreed to host it for us at deaddrop ( yay Bill!) so check back for updates.

Regarding lodging, it would help to know the budget that people have to work within. I know we have a wide range of budgets and that there is no point in spending more on a hotel than you need to. I think that midtown- which is in the middle of Manhattan and for general reference includes Times Square--may be the most central location, but if it isn't close to anything you want to do it can be inconvenient. Perhaps bagsbee and joebrent have some thoughts. There are a couple of fine, but not fancy, places to stay on the Upper West Side. Nothing on the Lower East Side or the Village comes to mind, but let us work on it and we will get back to you.

By the way, NYC is the safest large city in the known universe and only good things will happen to you when you visit us.

Truly. As I said before, don't believe the hype. Not that you can't find bad neighborhoods in New York, you certainly can, there's just no reason to ever go to any of them unless you live there.

General rule of thumb, anywhere in Manhattan below 110th St. is safe. And for those who are considering staying at Chéz Brent, I can vouch for the spectacular view Smile
