It's not really an ARGcon, it's an ARGfest, more of a meet and greet, drink, eat and be merry type thing really maybe with a little puzzley bit added for fun.

I've not been to one myself before, but I certainly wouldn't expect hundreds of people, although this sounds like it'll turn out to be larger than the others...

It's actually an ARGFest-O-Con, get it right Very Happy

There will be, in no particular order:
- sightseeing
- puzzling
- drinkering
- discussion-ing (of some sort)

I would love to have a structured, formal discussion with former and current PMs. I've spoken to a few people about it, and they seemed pretty gung ho, but this would also require having some sort of space (conference room, etc), which would require $$$. Would anyone else be interested in this?

conference

I am committed to making a conference (or at least a brunch or dinner meeting) happen while people are here. I have already started talking to people about various ideas and I hope to get something official set up within a month.

Once we have a sense of the number of people we can find a place to hold the meeting. I have access to several places of various sizes we can use to meet, including a friend who owns a restaurant who I could work something out with, a friend who owns a club and stuff like that. I have access to a whole theater space too, but I don't think we would want to use that. I am not worried about being able to find a place for us to meet at a very reasonable cost.

So I hope people will assume that some organized ARG discussions will be part of the festivities.

What type of organised ARG discussions are we talking about here?

I'm a native, but I wouldn't make a very good tour guide, I get lost too often.

I do gotta say that the Bronx Zoo is much much better than the Central Park Zoo. It is the premiere zoo in the world (at least I think so). I used to know it like the back of my hand. Anyway, during the summer months they have this really cool butterfly exhibit when you walk through this building that is full of butterflies. Just flying around loose, landing on you and stuff. They also have a new tiger exhibit where there's observation areas inside it, so you can get pretty close to them without any risk.

I would also recomend the Aquarium and Coney Island in Brooklyn, and South Street Seaport.

You can find more info here
This site is constantly updated (I know cause I do a lot of it) so as we get closer it will list things that are more current.

DUDE awesome summary. . . . The "sis" is going to use it as her "tourist guide" when she goes to NYC this spring.

Thanks again,

I'm still quite keen on coming to the ARGFest-O-Con since New York is relatively easy to get to from London, although it all depends on timing and other uncontrollable factors. Anyway, if I'm there, I would love to take part in a discussion about ARGs.

I'm going to try to come, depending upon some things I'll be there. Can I bring ppl who aren't very ARG-ish?

This has always been a highly entertaining element of being a part of this community -- trying to explain ARG to people who have no clue about what it is.

I say, the more the merrier, as long as you think your friends can handle the inevitable round-table discussion pertaining to the comparable hotness of Dana v. Laia Very Happy

Seriously, though... by all means, bring whoever you want, it's not an exclusive invite-only function by any stretch of the imagination.

bring everyone

This is definitely a "more the merrier sort of thing" and we promise to be good hosts and not completely bore our guests. Very Happy

Also - what we are working from is the idea that people will want to do some sight seeing or other things on their own or with a smaller group. Not everyone loves the Metropolitan Museum of Art or the ballet as much as I do (or the 4th Street Bar either, for that matter, although those people have serious problems.) So you shouldn't feel that you are trapped into a group thing that you cannot escape.

I am working on calling a few hotels to see about group rates and I promise to have it together by Monday evening.

And Kazic - really nice sig -we never get enough poetry.

wishi: I thought we could talk about whatever topics seem most relevant -- maybe people could post some ideas of what they are interested in hearing.

What I am trying to do atm, is get the guide together and invite every PM person that I can think of, to see what response we get. I am excited that Dave is planning to be here-- with his new book-- and I know that others are considering the invitation. When we get this group of people together there are a vary wide range of topics to talk about, so what are you interested in?

Astro - given that the total number we had in the past (given that the community before ILB was a bit smaller) We had about 25 or so at the Orlando gathering - we spent the days at Orlando Tourist places and had a "mini-quest" that was designed to have us hunt locations (and take pictures) that eventually soved to a restaraunt in City Walk at Universal for Drinkering. We generally had a few meals together in several very nice places and it was a lot of fun.

The itinerary may change as the number showing up for these gatherings grows, but It was nice to be able to put faces and voices to the nicknames.

As for "ARG" school, you could just ask a few of the "usual suspects" for some pointers, or look through the PM guide section here at UF.

Be part of the studio audience!

Many people have expressed interest in being part of the studio audience for the taping of one of the many TV shows filmed in NYC. Some tickets are harder to get than others (for example SNL), and most no longer do group tickets, you can usually get up to 4 at a time. Tickets are free. What I would recommend is that is you even have the faintest desire to want to go to one of these, try to reserve tickets anyway - did I mention they're free? Here's some links/info:

- The Daily Show with Jon Stewart - No tapings the week of ARGFest Sad , only available from Monday 7/25 on, for those staying a couple extra days. They may do group tickets, I'll pass by the box office soon. In the meantime you should order tickets anyway.
- Late Show with David Letterman - Only 2 tickets max. These are tough to get. Plus they are non-transferable.
- Conan O'Brien and SNL - Conan is loads of fun, he's great at working the audience. SNL tickets can only be gotten by standby, basically you go wait in line at 7am the morning of the show.

MTV also has some shows in NYC, although I can't in good conscience link to their site (hint: put a ".com" after it). There are also free studio tours and such (NBC has one, see the link for Conan/SNL above), check the respective sites for more info.

arg planning

For filming of shows, expect to spend alot of time waiting. Waiting for tickets, waiting to get seats. SNL gives out tickets for the last run through they do before the show goes live. Those may be easier to get.

While working on the guide, I found a site that links to webcams in various spots in NYC. (the Empire State Building has one but you have to register.)

these include:

views from the circle line

various times square locations

WTC: site status

and my personal favorite: the penguincam from the Central Park Zoo

baseball

So, my favorite team, the Yankees are away that weekend - but the Mets are here playing the Dodgers. Any interest? There is a Friday night game and games on Saturday and Sunday in the afternoon.

I am sure we could get group tickets should there be any interest.
