So, my favorite team, the Yankees are away that weekend - but the Mets are here playing the Dodgers. Any interest? There is a Friday night game and games on Saturday and Sunday in the afternoon.

I am sure we could get group tickets should there be any interest.

I'm game, Rose.

I don't suppose anyone knows someone who works for an airline who has some connections in that area?

All of us UKians are trying to find some cheap flights, a feat which seems near impossible right now.

Not a direct airline connection, but I'd recommend folks look at the ITA Software site for flight info. ITA code runs the engine for sites like Orbitz and Cheap Tickets. You can't book your tix via ITA, but their search engine is better than most. Just take what you find there and book with the airline directly.

Disclosure: my hubby works for them. Cool

As a frequent flyer, I'll second Gupfee's recommendation; it's a FF's favorite search tool. Some info: JKF = Kennedy, LGA = Laguardia, EWR = Newark. When you run the search, you can choose your preferred airport but opt to search for others within 25 miles. Sometimes you can get better (non-stop) and even less expensive flights arriving in one airport and departing from another.

If you need transportation between JFK & the city, you may want to use the $5 Airtrain.

Unfortunately, summer flights UK-US are some of the most expensive of the year. The good news is you have plenty of time to find a flight. Keep an eye out for fare sales. If I find any, I'll post info.

Nah, just kidding. Congrats on signing Johnson though -- you know, the other 41-year old with a bad back on your roster. Hope he doesn't try to punch out any walls like the first guy (which, incidentally, was the first thing he punched out in a while).

I come back in June -- hey, just in time to catch Bernie Williams's annual groin injury!

update

I know people have been patiently awaiting an update as to accomodations.

We have decided that the Times Square area is the most central location for people to stay.

We have decided that it is impractical to expect everyone to feel comfortable in the same kind of hotels. So I am listing some choices here. People need to peruse these choices, all of which, except the Hotel41 which bagsbee is checking out, I would verify as being acceptable.

1. Marriott Marquis: one of the better hotels right in Times Square. The on-line form says that rooms are not available, but when I called, they do seem to have rooms. If a large enough group is interested in staying there, we can work out group rates. I need to have a sense of the number of rooms we might reserve before I can get firm rates. Some special offers may apply. Again, we can book meeting space there should we need it.

2. Hotel Pennsylvania - not really in Times Square(but not too far away - a walkable distance) but cheap and pretty decent.
They offer the cheapest rooms that either Lou or I could find for a room. They also have meeting facilities should we need to book them.
Again, group rates are available if people are interested.

3. Courtyard by Marriot In Times Square
They offer suites for people who are willing to share a room. (organize your own suitemates please Smile imbri and others suggested that suites are nice to have a place to hang out as a group or part of a group, plus they can be very cost effective.Again, group rates may be available.

4. Hotel 41
They offer tiny or small rooms but are very reasonable. Bagsbee is going to check out the quality. The rates are similar to sharing a suite, but spacebass leans towards this location for privacy issues. They also have a "queen penthouse" that has a small balcony and could be shared by people.

I realize that we also have students traveling from Europe and from right here at home. These accomadations may be beyond their budget. But do not fear, there are other options, including hostels that I will explore. Also, I realize that we have local people who may need an inexpensive place to crash for the night. We can work this out. If people can post what they think they will need, it will be most helpful.

I know this is just a start, but I can recommend these places as good choices. After discussing it in the chat room, it became apparent that people want different types of accomodations. Spacely and people like him may be happy with a smaller, less expensive room and privacy ( how much time is actually going to be in the room anyway?) while Lou and others may prefer sharing a larger suite that also has room for people to hang out. So I didn't want to just pick a place as a "one-size-fits-all."

Please note, that other than the Hotel Pennsylvania, all of these hotels are within very short blocks of each other. The group will remain close together, even if in seperate hotels.

Europeans?

We have a request to start a list of people who will be attending ARGfest from Europe.

I will put Giskard on this list as he must attend.

Anyone else, please just post in this thread for now.

Penn's near Macy's, right? 5 minute walk to Times Square. And, as always, I have plenty of floor space.

BTW I think the Penthouse at Hotel 41 is where Annie Hall lived.

I'm attempting to come along with sequoya.

Fi's planning on trying to come too.

Anyone any idea what the Hotel Pennsylvania group rates would be like? The cheapest double rooms they have are $126/night (averaged across the days I put in).

Details of the Hotel Pennsylvania

Hotel Pennsylvania: the location is good, see above in this thread. I know sapagoo stayed there and said it was fine.

Group Rate:

Rules: to get the group rate we only need ten people not ten rooms. The group rate gets locked in and is used for the whole stay, even if you stay longer than the rest of the group. We can lock in this rate for everyone who wants to stay there once we book it as a group.

The rooms we get as a group are"superior" quality rooms which have been renovated, the rooms offered online have not been renovated. Also, the online price has a service charge, has to be paid when booked and is non-refundable. If you book with the group, you can cancel up to 3PM the afternoon before and get a refund.

Rates:
for a single or double is a flat $129 plus tax per night -that is per room not per person. They can make triple or quad in a room for an additional $15 per additional person - a triple is $129 plus $15 plus tax and a quad is $129 plus $30 plus tax.

They also have reasonably price meeting space we can use if we decide to hold a meeting there.

I think this may be the best deal we can find for hotel rooms. If there is sufficient interest in suites, I can look into that as well.

And, as per wishi's request, we are efforting the search for a hostel - but it is like the Arctic outside today so I am not planning on checking any place out until it thaws a bit. I hope bagsbee survives his trek to Hotel 41. Smile

Harvest Inn Motel in Pine Bush NY.

Sitting only a mere 1 and a half hours from the city, this place is cheap and nice.

I have personally been to this hotel for quite a while, and while the rooms can get cramped for anywhere over 5 people (but what place doesn't) the faciluties are nice and kept well, and the location is in very convienient for other reasons. Within a very short walking distance is the 24/7 supermarket Hannafords (Brand New), McDonald's, Dunc'n'Donuts, Liquor store, and Subway(resturaunt).

It's distance from the city is not quite pleasing to those who want to get in quickly, But I will be able to choufer 3 mabey more people each day to and from. There are also a variety of sites to bee seen (asthetically pleasing and recreational) within a very short detoure from the route.

Pro: Well Reviewed and tested, Area is safe, comfortable and NICE. VERY CHEAP Rates

Kon: 1.5 hours from NYC

Yes, I am planning to come.

Is it worth creating a wiki for this, so we can have more interaction of peoples ideas and suggestions? This thread is a bit static, really.
