[Halo 2] Question [spoiler]

What exactly happened at the end of Quarantine Zone? My dad came in during the cinematic and wouldn't shut up, so I couldn't hear half of it.
Specifically, what is that big thing? Where did it come from? What does it do?
I suppose he's sent the MC to the throne room of High Charity, but where did the Arbiter go?

(edit: i've added 'spoiler' to the topic, let me know if this is unnecessary -- catherwood)

Trout ALL OF YOU!

I called it a little shop of horrors rip off a long time ago. :p

I definatly think that the key to the storyline lies in that cinematic.

As my memory is a bit hazy, feel free to correct me anyone.

From what I recall, it is left unclear what Gravemind (that plant thingy) is. It is speculated that it could be a particularly advanced Flood, and that it is the controlling force behind the flood. Which makes sense, because while the average flood is just mindlessly attacking, they do seem to pop up in strategic points throughout the game. Anyways, I forget the thread that discussed this, and am at the moment too lazy to find it. The Arbiter get's sent to find the index, but at a different location than the MC.

Ookay, massive spoilers.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The Gravemind saves the Arbitor from his fall, and the chief from his watery grave. He says he is a 'monument to all your sins', and brings out the prophet of Regret and Halo 05's monitor-who he's very-flood like taken over. They argue about containments and sermons, and the Gravemind puts them away and says 'This ones sermon, and this ones containment are one and the same.' and something along the lines of 'do not mistake what the builders of this place built it for. All life in the galaxy will be wiped out if you do not listen' blah blah blah. The Chief agrees, and the Arbitor goes on about how the demon already destroyed one sacred ring and won't destroy another. The Gravemind says that if he won't believe him he will have to show him, and that there is still time to stop the key from turning. He sends the Chief to High Charity and the Arbitor back to the surface to search for the index in the two most likely places it would be.

And there you have it, there is a LOT said in that cutscene, but that is the general gist of it.

Yeah.. what DM said!

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I am pretty certain it is a Flood hivemind type thing, since Cortana blathers something about how the Gravemind tricked them into something or another. It was right when the Flood was using captured Pelican dropships to invade High Charity. Why the Gravemind didnt use those transporting rings instead.. no one knows.

Still, its obvious the Gravemind didnt want the Halo's fired, since he too would be obliterated. How he survived the original firing (100,000+ years ago) is left unsolved. From the delapidated state of "Delta Halo" (stupid name btw), it can be speculated that perhaps it DIDNT fire way long ago, and was the weak link in the Halo chain.. though why the Flood didnt escape in the intervening millenia.. I dont know.

Sigh. So many questions! But thats what I love about the Haloverse!

To quote 'The Art of Halo', page 56:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
"The Gravemind is one of the more shocking moments in Halo 2. Discovering that the Flood is not simply a mindless virus comes as quite a surprise. The Gravemind can be thought of as a cross between the Flood's logical evolution and a queen ant. The Gravemind is literally built from the bodies of its enemies and its own fallen warriors reassembled into a massive, tentacled, and intelligent entity, trapped somewhere in this new Halo."

The Art of Halo is a Bungie-authorized look into the design of both Halo and Halo 2.

I have the Offical Halo 2 Guide, which was co-written by Bungie. It says nothing specific about Gravemind, but it does say this:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
This cinematic interlude shoes the extrodinary meeting of the Master Chief, the Arbiter and the Gravemind - which appears to be the central "consciousness" of the Flood...

My guess is: is that the "little shop of horrers" guy is flood. It almost looked like it was "infested" to the Regret guy. I could be wrong but it kinda makes sense if you think about it.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
When you are the MC on the level at the end (cant remember, I think it is the last MC level. Forgot the name) and you fight the flood and the covies on the covie Space Station (Wink), the farther you go the more infested the whole area gets...

It sure is something that was left a mystery in the end, I bet it'll be answered in the next game...

Edited: Just read last few post, So he is Flood... now we have to kill it

My question is whether its a conciousness for the Flood as a WHOLE, or just the Flood it spawned.

Since on the 1st mission for the Arbiter, you are on the Gas Mining Station over Threshold, and there are Flood there. That is the same system the first Halo (Halo 04) was located in. Now whether they were being controller or were just 'free roaming' we dont know. It doesnt seem likely to me that the one being could control all the flood in the known universe, since.. well, thats pretty big. But its possible I guess, some genetic mumbo jumbo or something. Maybe telepathic? We haven't really seen anything like "magic" in the Haloverse yet, but we would be remiss to discount anything!!

Also, in replaying the Original Halo.. when the Flood capture Captain Keyes.. they place him on the bridge of the Truth and Reconcilliation, though he has been integrated into a large biomass of Flood. Could this possibly be the formation of a new "Gravemind"? The Flood were only released for a day or two game-time by this point, so perhaps it was only in the formative stage? We don't know how long the Gravemind on "Delta Halo" has been around for, but from his words it seems like it's been a long time.

I [spec]ulate that as part of its "natural" cycle, the Flood infects a strong mind and converts it into a type of leadership caste. Helping to futher propagate the species. Of course, Keyes looked nothing like the Gravemind, couldnt talk all scary-like and didnt have tentacles. So.. we'll see![/i]

I'm suspecting that all flood kept in quarantine zones on the rings are kept alive somehow. It would explain why all flood elsewhere in the galaxy is dead, and they aren't. Obviously the forerunners felt that there was some good in studying the Flood, and the fact that Johnson, having survived a flood infection, now has regenerative properties (like the flood do), would seem to give some weight to that argument.

I'm thinking, judging from the dilapidated state of Delta Halo (which looks likes a freakin warzone), that it was where the incident leading to the first firing of the rings started. I mean, compare it to installation 04, which was pretty pristine.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
My question, is now that the Gravemind and the Flood have reached High Charity, and, apparently, are probing Cortana for information, what's going to happen next. Without the forerunner ship, I doubt High Charity can go anywhere, and I don't expect the Arbiter to allow any Elite ships to even go near that thing, and risk an outbreak-but the rest of the Covenant, I don't know. And with Cortana, they could easily figure out how to construct a spacecraft to get out from there, too.

I'm beginning to suspect not allowing Tartarus to fire the ring could be a mistake.
