[Sable & Shuck] A game in the vein of :K:?

A possible new ARG/puzzle from Stella Artois in the vein of the BMW game. An advert in Vice for thisisnotatypo.com. The URL redirects us to the Hornchurch Star... and on it goes.

The Stella Artois connection comes from the spooky crossroads article - the image and the two witnesses both coming from a recent television advert for Stella. Marlowe, an in-game design company, also has a Stella Artois logo in it's portfolio. There's also a link in H* classifieds.

Everything is *very* interlinked - it's hard to miss a mention of a person or event as they're usually mentioned in several different places.

There's a couple of logins, a lot of contact pages, lottery numbers, GPS co-ordinates (KILL ME) and even some strange symbols!

Anyone up for an explore?

PS: Slightly worried that the adverts they're linked with were a while ago, that the copy of Vice the ad was in was from a couple of months back, and that this is uber-trout. Despite searching Unfiction til my eyes bled.

Edit by Addlepated - changed subject line for clarity.

A little more info.

The GPS coordinates here seem to map to somewhere off the coast of England (or possibly on land, I'm not sure the figures are specific enough to narrow it down that far) and somewhere in Mongolia.

In-game so far:
Hornchurch Star - local news site for Hornchurch in the USA, full of weird goings on and incredible luck amongst it's population. It just might have something to do with Sable & Shuck, a firm which seems to offer unbeliveable riches (etc) to those willing to sell their souls in return. The RichesEtc are delivered by Inferno Cargo, a partner of Trident Air, a spooky passenger airline, and Pathway Travel, an equally spooky travel agents. All the sites except H* are designed by Marlowe Digital. Interestingly they did a corporate identity onethreesixsix, while the population of Hornchurch is 1,366. Needless to say Sable & Shuck are the parent company of EVERYTHING including the parent company of the Hornchurch Star, Omni Publications - who don't seem to have a website.

FINALLY our protaganist! John Harker is trying to find out more about the man in black at He Walks Among Us. If you've visited all the sites above a lot of stuff here (like The Signs) are very familiar.

The question being, where are the puzzles? There's still the symbols from the previous post of course, some logins and the significance of things like the GPS locations and the 1366 coincidence. This table could be a puzzle? Happy hunting!

Meta-PS: There are really, really tacky references to the thing that this is promoting in the websites. I really have cringed a few times. It's all for Stellascreen.co.uk apparently. A timeframe clue at MD suggests that the game was open for play on August 27th with some kind of concluding event on October 31st.

Well I think this looks kinda interesting. I registered with Sable and Shuck (such cool names!) and got this in response:

Quote:
You have registered your details with Sable & Shuck, a company that provides commodities of supreme quality and worth, in return for human souls that meet our criteria*.

We will be in contact soon.

Director of Acquisitions
Sable & Shuck

*Transactions can only take place after a contract is signed by both parties.

I also signed up for the news updates on the Hornchurch Star ad got this response:

Quote:
You have registered for irregular news updates from The Hornchurch Star.

Look out for our irregular news in your inbox.

The Editor

I also sent them an e-mail asking why the links on most of the adverts on the main site go straight to an error page.

Unfortunately I'm at work, but will definitey be investigating further. I don't know why, but I really like the marketing based ARGs. Hmm, possibly cuz I work in marketing actually...

How did you hear about this btw? What is Vice? And what was the original advert?

Cheers for posting it!

Fi

This is interesting, thanks. You can sign up for most of the websites and receive autoresponses, as mentioned above, plus I registered for hewalksamongus:

Quote:

Thanks for signing up for updates about he who walks among us. The more support I get, the more chance we have of fighting him.

I am currently researching the man in black's involvement with an institution or company called Sable&Shuck. All the evidence suggests that they are involved in a plot to acquire human souls by promising unimaginable luxuries in return.

I will let you know more as soon as I discover it. Remember, knowledge about him is power over him, so please forward this on to any friends or loved ones you wish to warn.

Defiantly,

Jon Harker
http://www.hewalksamongus.com

You can also book a trip with Pathway Travel for the tiny price of your soul Wink I tried booking to Devil's Island (where Trident Air are based), for 1, Whenever. I received this autoreply:

Quote:

Thank you for registering your details with Pathway Travel.

We are currently processing your request, as is our parent company http://www.sableshuck.com.

EDIT (Just to avoid posting twice in a row)

I sent a comment to Marlowe Digital through their website asking if there was a site for Omni Publications itself, and just got the following reply:

Quote:

Jehane,

Thanks for expressing an interest in Marlowe. Our current work for Omni Publications is a complete rebranding - unfortunately we can't share this with you at present. We can however direct you to the current Omni identity on our website.

We are currently collating some of our more recent work and intend to update our site over the next few weeks.

Marlowe Digital

Hmm, very interesting. Lots of sites out there.

On http://www.sableshuck.com/privacy_policy.php there is what looks to be Greek and under the Greek title "Lepidopteran clause". Lepidopteran means an insect with 4 wings covered with scales.

The "Greek" below it says "Butterflies are souls of the dead waiting to pass through Purgatorps". Purgatorps? ... I think this is supposed to be purgatory.

According to http://www.hewalksamongus.com/thesigns.htm under Lepidoptera the butterflies in the man in black's collection are human souls. Watch out for someone shunned by butterflies! Wink

The directory http://www.sableshuck.com/images/ is viewable so you can see all the images there. Haven't noticed where aleph.gif is used yet. Edit: aleph.gif is used in the news on the main page - it is their "aleph" anniversary

http://www.goldenfuturesandoptions.com/ - Not been mentioned above. This can be seen on HWAU on about2big.htm

Interesting places that Pathway Travel flies to, their most popular destinations:
  • Devil's Island
  • Babel
  • Nazca
  • Valhalla
  • Giza
  • Tunguska
  • Atlantis
  • Elysian Fields
  • Armageddon
  • Gomorrah
As tempting as they sound, how about Spain? Wink

Aleph, apparently, is a number used in denoting infinite sets. (From here) So I guess they're saying that they're celebrating their, uh, infinite anniversary.. ie they've been about forever. Which kinda makes sense, I guess, considering the content. Wink

Also, you can actually choose Spain as a destination to book from Pathway, Wishi - but I guess most people who sell their soul must not just do it to get a free package holiday Wink

Wishi, that's funny what you said about butterflies because when I emailed Hornchurch Star to see why the links on the adverts didn't work, the one that I said I was particularly interested in was the Butterflies one :O !!!

Apart from all the "Are you over 18" tick boxes, I have seen no hard evidence that this is tied into Stella Artois. Perhaps someone could point me in the right direction until I have more time to explore (i.e. the weekend!).

Cheers,

Fi

The main thing I saw, was that on the Marlowe Digital site, under selected works, the last entry is Stella Artois. Click on this and you will also be able to click an 'Enter Site' link to go to the stellascreen website that GuyPsons mentioned above.

I emailed the Hornchurch Star asking for free beer in return for our investigative skills... Wink

Vice is a free painfully-hip music/fashion/sex/drugs magazine. I saw the advert in the UK edition, which was just thisisnotatypo.com repeating endlessly in a spiral upon the page. Very minimalist actually, and I can't help thinking that a Pathway Travel advert might have garnered a bit more attention.

Golden Futures & Options is linked to from the Hornchurch Star too, although it links to an error page on that domain which you have to get rid of to see the site. Alas it only links you to Sable & Shuck... I think it's an old S&S marketing campaign:

"Belgian agency Marlowe has been appointed to acquire at least 45.000 souls by the end of the year - Sable & Shuck's highest target since the closure of last year's Golden Futures campaign."

It still seems more ARThing than ARGame to me though. Siiigh...

Clues I don't know what to do with: the lottery numbers are a Fibonacci sequence (you get the next number by adding the previous two together), I tried looking for files named fibonacci and 55 but no luck. The horoscope for Leo says: As the sandglass reminds us, time is always running out. It's time you turned the sandglass around and lived for today. " RIGHT NEXT TO AN IMAGE OF A SANDGLASS!

The Cancer horoscope "The stars show you getting lost in some woods in Burkittsville. Beware the hoaxers" is a sly reference to the Blair Witch Project.

The review of the film Pilot here refers to the latest Stella Artois commercial, viewable [ur=http://www.stellascreen.co.uk/l]here[/url]. I'm not sure how far the "clues in ads" will take us though as they aren't all set in the same universe - although a recent one was set at Hornchurch's spooky crossroads.

as for the "aleph" -- stating the obvious perhaps, but Aleph is the Hebrew equivalent of A.

And if you're adding souls, and travel destinations like Gemorra and Armageddon (both in what is today Israel--Armageddon, according to the Old Testament at least, will take place around Megido), Hebrew Numerology makes a lot of sense.

Aleph = 1.

first anniversary?

Fi: A quick whois on a domain will give you the address of Lowe Live (now Draft London) who are an advertising agency and taking a peek at their UK clients, you'll see InterBrew - the company which makes Stella.

Not proof that it is Stella but I'm pretty sure it is Smile

Yep, after some further investigation I think you're right Wink

I found this from an advertising web board.

D*mn bl**dy work is getting in the way of any more serious snooping!

Fi

[EDIT]
There's some more discussion here.
Seems they've had some replies to emails sent.

Now it's time to go home - woo!
But to a home with no internet - boo!

Actually the two sets of Latitude/Longitude are in (1) Belgium (Latitude: 50 45N, Longitude: 004 46E) and (2) North Dakota - near Devils Lake (Latitude: 48 06N, Longitude: 098 54W) which is consistant with the map on that page.
