Just had dinner with Durga...

Wow. What a day.

I'm out in LA for the break. Prior to heading out I put out an all call to keepers in the area to see if anyone was interested in hooking up. HitsHerMark and Shad0 replied.

We met around one today at a small italian restraunt and had an incredible time. Well, I had an incredible time at least, I can't really speak for them, but they did hang around for 2 hours... Wink

We hit all the usual subjects: where do you work, what do you like to do...
Then as all good Beekeepers should, we talked bees. Those two hours absolutely flew by.

Earlier Nuriko (sp?) had been in contact with Kristen Rutherford about possibly meeting for dinner while she and some friends were in for a conference. I had invited Kristen to come to lunch with us, but she had prior engagements that wouldn't allow her to come. Really she could of just said she couldn't be there, and been done with it. I would of been a bit bummed, but I would of understood. Instead, she started trying to figure out when we could meet and worked to rearrange her schedule allow us to get together. I was dumbstruck.

Here is this person, that doesn't know me from the next guy on the street going out of her way to make me feel important ... wow. She is amazing.

Well, Nuriko graciously invited HHM, Shad0 and I to join them for dinner, which at first I was unavalible for, but plans changed and to my joy I was able to go.

Unfortunately my mother and I got lost on the way down to the Sushi bar. We found ourselves in a not-so-nice part of town so I called HHM. She preceded to tell me that she had gotten lost also due to the horrible directions. Then she asks me to hold on for a second ... The next thing I heard made me lose all concentration.

Melissa: Crew member, where are you?
Moron: Uh... I don't know... It's these coordinates, yeah, that's it...

Kristen laughed, told me she probably wasn't the one to ask for directions, then handed the phone back to HHM. I was so caught off guard that I really had no idea how to respond. It's something about that voice.

Finally, we found the restraunt after HHM and I played some cell phone tag in the courtyard. The dinner is still a blur to me. I don't remember ever having so much fun (other then possibly at the Chicago event Wink ) and speaking so little. All I did for most of the night was sit and listen to HHM, Kirsten, and Shad0 talk. Save for the times that Kirsten directly asked me a question I think I spoke a total of four times. If you get the opprotunity to meet Kirsten take it.

After dinner resumes and business cards were traded with my mother of all people, and I rode home replaying the night over and over in my tiny little head as I read about a certain someone being 'freakishly good at "Dead or Alive 3"' I hope you don't mind.

HitsHerMark, Nuriko, Shad0 and Kristen? <long envious sigh>

Meanwhile, here in Milwaukee, I'm faced with Barnes & Nobles and Borders that do not carry any of Sean, Alex, or Maureen's books and report that they have no plans to order any of them at any time.

Graaaghhh! Perfect Circle just came out in what, July? How do none of the chain bookstores in a large metropolitan area have a copy?

And while I'm threatening bookstore employees, angelo's having dinner with awesome beekeepers and Kristen.

Phaedra, I cannot tell you how many times I tried to tell the booksellers to get Sean Stewart books in at B&N. Almost every time I go in there, in fact. It's one of my small missions in life, I suppose.

If I still worked there, I'd be ordering them willy-nilly all the damned time.

Sean Stewart has a book? Must... find.. book.

And thus, a great quest is started:

The Search for the Awsome Book

Oh, dude. He has many. Mockingbird was the first I read, but I really recommend Galveston. I just used a gift certificate from Amazon in order to get Perfect Circle, which came out over the summer.

This is why i love Powell's books here in Portland, huges books store, 4 stories. They had most of Sean's books. Did not have Passion Play (although is that also fiction? may be in another section..) i bought two of em to add to my reading list. Yet another reason to love Potland. Books stores have Sean's books Very Happy

First of all, congrats to Angelo (and HHM, Nuriko, and Shad0) for the
wonderful experience.

Second, I thought you kids today eschewed B&Ms in favor of the online experience. Sure, you can't sit in an Amazon and have a coffee with your book, but you can sit on your couch and have a coffee while you order it.

Or is there some anti-Amazon backlash movement that I missed?

In amazon, you can't read it in-store. Amazon is a wonderful store, but soemtimes, you just have to go toa real book store. They occasionally have better prices. Plus, Powell's is just damn awsome bookstore!

Tell me about it. I went to both just prior to my trip in hopes of having one of their books to read on my trip out here. No such luck...

<spit take with tea>

You didn't know of Sean Stewart??!

Amazing, mind-blowing, bestselling (well for SF), multi-award-winning author.

Get thee to a bookstore.
