Before I do something silly, a question; (whose answer I cannot decypher on the site, oddly...)
Is it the numerical ranking by order or by number? If I rate something a "1", am I making it my top choice or am I making it the lowest of a possible "14"?
-- Steve is starting to see why "first past the post" has lasted as long as it has.

I questioned that too Anton, considering all the choices I ranked last (or so I thought) were the ones listed as being most voted for. But then again everyone is always playing while I am sleeping. But if it says to rank it, 1 would have to be highest priority.

erm, if 1 is the choice you most prefer, then i did it all backwards.... oops.
edit: I am a prime example of the problems with electronic voting

#1 is your first choice, #2 is your second choice, and so on. Sorry for the confusion. The idea is to order them by greater preference. The time that is best for you should be #1. The time that is worst for you should be #14. If you only want to vote for, say, 3 of them, then mark the rest (11) of them "No opinion."

I believe it was Kali who sent her Xbox in for repairs. I was wondering how much it ended up costing you to get it fixed. I believe that my box has a Thomson drive which is known for having problems reading the second layer in multi-layered disc's/DVD's. Anyways, I was thinking about sending it in, and wondered how much I might expect to pay.

Kali's box had a problem with the Ethernet jack, if I remember correctly, not the drive. So the cost of repairs probably wouldn't be the same.
If you do need to replace your old Thompson drive, and you're willing to do the work yourself, you can find a replacement drive on eBay for pretty cheap. My drive totally crapped out a few months back (The day after I got Fable. Pissed me off to no end) and I found another drive for 30 bucks shipped. Took about 15 minutes to swap it out, too.

After you find out how much it will cost to send in your Xbox, check with these guys:
http://www.llamma.com/xbox/
On that site, you can find reasonably-priced replacement drives, repair terms, trade-in terms, and even thorough instructions on how to clean the drive yourself. A few months ago ROBOGriff had to clean his brother's XBox DVD drive. Using the instructions on that web site, Griff got the drive working good as new again.

I have a friend that bought some replacement parts for his thomson drive from llama. He used their instructions and it seemed to help the situation, but the bottom line is that thomson drives are all ****! I think it's probably better to buy a replacement drive, like a Philips. Samsung is the best, but it's probably too expensive to justify.
If you don't know which drive you have, you can check these pictures, on the second post:

jeebus those drives are expensive. Might as well buy a new box... I just may break down and do that soon before my Xbox implodes for good. Moving all those save game files is going to be a major pain though...

Likewise, Llamma.com has a web page illustrating each drive (which isn't blocked by work's #$!%#* filtering):

Yeah, I REALLY wish you could move games over a LAN. You'd think you'd be able to, but if you can, I haven't figured out how. It'd make copying stuff over much more pleasent, especailly for some of those games I can't even fit on my memory card (KOTOR comes to mind...).

A modded xbox can do it just fine. Use FTP or samba server and you have access to all your save files (and much more) ...

Thanks for all the info! I had thought I posted my question on the main Halo 2 thread, and wasn't even checking in here. Damn those late night, post misplacing, mischievous gnomes!
