I still vote for Apple - in conjunction with MindCandy and probably someone else...

I doubt it's apple, as they have already released the new cube. Albeit with a new name and a heck of a lot smaller (and cheaper).

I know. I am an Apple-fan.

But on the other hand, there has been some rumours flying around the Internet that Apple has designed the new G6 under the working-name "Cube" and that it is supposed to be scheduled sometime during late 2005/early 2006. Probably just a rumour though...but you never know!!!

I still fail to see anything "unusual" about Sony or Apple. I mean, wow, imagine video games or a computer company being behind an ARG. Can't think when that's happened before. Besides, the timing is wrong on both of those.

My bet is still on the Bedlam Cube guy, via vague Firebox connections. That, or someone with Firebox is an "angel investor," as suggested earlier in this thread.

The only other thing that really makes sense to me is that Firebox and Mind Candy are doing this to establish an ARG-making advertising business, such as MC itself, and so they are their own unusual sponsor. The Firebox guy seems to be really enthusiastic about the future of ARGs, so it's possible that he's putting money into MC with no payback beyond using his catalogue to sell those cards.

How would the timing be wrong with Apple? They are at a brilliant position within business at the moment.. I would say that this would be perfect timing.

The timing would be wrong because, as was stated earlier, they already released their new cube stuff. If they have yet another cube product which will be comming out sometime this year, then their timing would work, and it would only be the fact that there is absolutely nothing unusual about them that would rule them out.

I think Adrian has made it pretty clear who his unusual backer is: Sente (using funds from the Perplex City Council). With Sente's backing, Mind Candy was set up to run the game. Money from sale of card packs (and who knows what else) will be used to leverage the money from the council in order to keep things running until the cube is located.

Now, from an OOG standpoint, (Is anything OOG at this point?) there's no reason to assume that the backer is at all unusual. I'd guess its a group of investors, and a bunch of bank loans - much like any other startup.

I wouldn't it it's been made 'pretty clear' atall .. I assume OOG that is that the ARG is promoting something like most other ARGs do. Of course this could break the trend.. but I still don't think that this has been ruled out yet.

You're missing my point. I think its been made pretty clear that when Adrian said he had an "unusual" backer, he was speaking as the in-game character Adrian Hon, and referring to Sente as his backer.

I don't think we've received any indication who the actual OOG backer is, or even whether there is a traditional backer for this game. The actual OOG backer could be as ordinary and expected as a video game manufacturer. Or, it could be as unusual as not having any true backer at all. My point is, trying to guess the OOG backer based on the presumably in-game "unusual backer" comment would be unproductive.

Of course, since trying to guess the backer isn't the most productive of pursuits anyway... no harm done ,eh? Dunno

I think you're right about the "unusual backer" IG being Sente/PCA. OOG, I think the "unusual backer" is us, the players. We're going to buy the PPC cards and the PM's will use that money to pay for the ARG(well, that's probably the business plan, anyway). They very well may have borrowed money to start the ball rolling, as someone mentioned already, but ultimately I think the cards are going to fund the ARG.

RI_Barnica is right. I apologise for my earlier stupidity. It is much more likely that the "unusual" sponsor was Sente. So, which game do you think this one's for?

i had kinda subscribed to the 'the puzzle cards are the hook' theory but this comment from thrush makes a good point...

Hmm... I get the feeling that there could be a kind of sneaky product placement kind of thing going on here. The key seems to be a souped-up version of a PDA/phone hybrid - sort of like a Gizmondo, but hopefully a lot more powerful. Is it possible that this could be a part of the whole setup - to launch a new media handset?

i dont think the gizmondo's been specced much so far, but it does have most of these capabilities - definitely more of a fit than the DS or the PSP and its unique features do kinda make it perfect as the companian to an ARG or any kind of real life roaming game (city based pacman for example). its only just launched but its not really been marketed yet and seems like the kind of company who would be up for doing something new and different to get their product talked about, especially with the lack of software games available for it atm. maybe nothing but a possibilty, any londoners should check out their store on regent st tho cos if nothing more they do have free wi fi downstairs Smile

Hello
This is an autorespond to say thanks very much for your email and interest
in PS.

As promised we'll be back in touch on the eve of the launch (late 2004)
and we'll be able to go into much greater detail then.

Your early interest and patience will be rewarded.

Yours enigmatically,

The PS team

Just thought this might be intresting, probably nothing to do with anything though.

um, i assume thats an autoresponder email from Project Syzygy and hence the PS. whether you were trying to make a point about PS having similar initials to something else or you simply didnt know it was about Project Syzygy i dont know because your post didnt exactly give us many more clues as to why you posted that. so a little confused...

rach =)
