i'm more than happy to run a log-bot on my server.... i think my ISP wont mind cause i've done it in the past...they only kicked when i ran a IRC server and that was after...ooo...3 months.
Yah Sish if ya want i could get a simple bot wrote in perl to dump logs, then u can pull via rsync or ftp when your update script runs, or ill just set u a account on meh server for like chat.incognitus.net/syzygy or summat.

FYI, Spacely has kindly upgraded the UF java chat client to a shiny new version that supports multiple rooms, and is generally a lot nicer than the old one.

I already have my desktop connected 24/7, logs are pushed from that - what I was wondering is if chat-solutions and whoever mods #syzygy would mind a dedicated logger - some networks don't like having multiple connections from the same address and such. chat-solutions.org's website is screwed at the moment so I can't check their rules...
Once things are OK with CS.org and the #syzygy mods then I'd have my server connected to IRC directly, running a client with nobody sitting behind it, so all it would do is give real-time logs - It could be an interactive bot rather than a simple logger, but I'll think about that when I've got the simple stuff set up :)
ED> Wishi-san seemed OK with things, I'll be getting to it then~
ED2> Mostly done, logs should now be real time; the stats page is still regenerated once per hour as it takes up all the processing power - it could survive being done once every 5 minutes, but I think that'd lead to an increase in stat whoring...
The logs now also contain the full date on every line, so search-by-date should be easier to write whn I eventually get round to it :)
ED3> most things should be working now
To-Do:
o) Search by date & nick as well as main text
o) Regex for non-programmers guide
o) website snapshotter & recent alteration pointer outer
o) Automate siggy signup *

You know, I've just realised that you guys are doing the PMs a *massive* favour by doing this! Now they won't even have to try and spy on the room

My dedicated logger uses a different format (more data, easier to parse) so I couldn't keep the old stuff from my desktop; it's only been online for ~24 hours, during which a manual search shows that yes, nobody's used the word "cube"

The logs are there for use of the community - not as a historical record; thus things like people spamming the channel will be edited out, and whoever was IUGuest can have the logs changed to their real name so that it's easier to search for them later - you can take comfort in the fact that my willingness to edit things means the logs aren't valid evidence in a court of law
(Note that I can't be arsed to edit petty things for personal gain; as said, I only edit if it's of benefit to the whole community to do so)

+/- 2 lines of context have been added - a good thing or not?
lookee
Note that I've added a bug whereby the first and last two lines of conversation (out of all the logs put together) can't be searched for, that's not a problem to anyone, is it?

Yah Shish, but make the line where the word is found bold

The word itself is hilighted; I'm thinking of various ways to show the importance of the matched line - currently I'm experimenting with different line sizes...
ED> Now lines fade in and out, better?
Also, it would seem that you *can* search for a word that's the second to last line, no idea how that works; it really shouldn't as I bail out at end of file, and there's two lines lag in the buffer :?

Much easier to see what the relivant line is now
I was gonna say can you put line numbers, but you have full date and time so thats better

Hmmm... upgrades
(for those too lazy to click, the search now has timestamp & line number optional, toggling of context, and will only bother searching the past 7 days unless told to search all)
Non-regex searching is on the to-do list, but is considerably harder than a simple if(line.matches(search)); also I need to make it like grep's context, so if a word is used twice it extends the current result rather than starting a new one.
Also, for sanity reasons hits are limted to 50, to stop someone doing a "match all" regex getting hit with several MB of archives; I'll have an infinite number of hits split over several pages when I figure out the best way of doing it...
Still to do: search by date & username
ED> Wow, looking at the code I just realised I haven't used *any* functions o_O Time for some neatening then...
ED2> LOTS of changes have been made - is it still working alright?

AIM i have a question.. why dont people just use AIM, MSN, or Yahoo messanger insteadd of IRC... because for some reason i always hear about people with connecting problems and you never hear people having problems with AIM MSN or Yahoo..
Edit: Removed excessive bolding. -SpaceBass
