[PUZZLE?] E Numbers

By now we all know that all the "logged" messages in the Perplex City errorlog have ten-digit codes attached- ten-digit codes that come from the number e. I looked up a site that had e listed to the millionth digit, and checked each of these codes. I think the order the documents were modified might have some importance, so-
The ten-digit codes appear in e in a certain order- i.e. one code comes before another. But if you partition e into segments of ten digits each, you'll get the codes- none "cuts into" another one's ten-count, and no digits are skipped or counted twice. There are eleven codes. If you order on the site by date modified, then the order they appear in e is:
10 8 7 6 4 2 3 1 9 5 11
Go ahead, play with those numbers a little. Let's see if I can make this a little simpler- I'm terrible at explanations.
If you order the conversations by the order in which their codes appear in e, you get:
1. Elizabeth Lee's shoe message beginning "Have you *seen* these?"
2. Sarah Covington's message beginning "I'd say we could even expense it..."
3. Juliane Pero's message beginning "Lizzie, you are too much!!!"
4. The "Gatehouse 24" message containing "Waiting long, sis?"
5. The Zeller biography
6. Tanner's message to Sarah complaining about the equipment not being shut down properly
7. Tanner's apology to Sarah for that same message
8. Sarah's response to Tanner's first message
9. The other Gatehouse 24 message
10. Amy tanner asking Henrik if he's home for dinner
11. The message from the mail daemon

Is this the order these people/entities wrote their messages? Perhaps. They do seem to be in order that way, and that explains the e-codes- the computer must divide e into ten digit codes, then record each message and assign it a code so that someone who has access to a long list of e digits can put the messages in order fairly easily. However, some ten-digit segments of the count are missing from that log. Those might be messages we're missing.
This makes more and more sense as I write it out. We haven't really played with order yet- this could be key.

i also think this is important, and although what i am posting has already been mentioned i am adding some spec and refreshing the minds of those who cannot find this, which is now buried very deep in another thread.

so far we seem to have 4 missing logs:

6028747135 7627724076
3200305992 0033429526

below is e to the last know log digit (ive added two more series of 10 just for leniency)

2.718281828|459045235360287471352662497757|2470936999|59574966
96
76277240766303535475|9457138217|8525166427|427466391932003059
92
1817413596|62904357290033429526059563073813232862794349076323

and this is the logs in the order they appear in e:

2718281828 - marchant (removed the . after 2)

4590452353 - hesketh zeller (1 more, possibly on taversen) >

6028747135 – taversen? (or more on cube history? ni)

2662497757, 2470936999, 5957496696 – shoes (needs 1 more) >
7627724076 – lyssa's response to shoes?

6303535475, 9457138217, 8525166427, henrick tanner to sarah covington

4274663919 – amy tanner to henrik - (needs 1 more) >

henricks reply- 3200305992 to dinner?

1817413596, 6290435729 – gatehouse 24 (logs needs 1 more) >

0033429526 –another gatehouse log?

0595630738 – mail failed, PS complete.

4 missing logs (before the completion of ps).

now if there a way to find these missing logs, or even if they are on the site, using the number code, i dunno, but i do suspect we will eventually have to find these logs

its an eyesore i know Wink bear with me

Ok, I just realized the following:
there might be a repeating sequence in the frequency of the sets used as names of logs.
consider each group of digits, in the order as they appear in e. for each group, I'll put down a 0 if it is not the name of a log, and a 1 if it is the name of a log:

001
0001
00001
001
000

(skip 2, skip 3, skip 4, repeat)

If this is a repeating pattern, the next group of 10 digits might be used (at some point in time) as the name of a log file.
Or do I need...
..yeah, maybe I do need....

Calling them E numbers just makes me think of the codes that you get for food. however i dont think that they have anything to do with these... im just thinking out loud.

Yeah, E numbers in food are just quick ways to note which additives and stuff are in there, for example monosodium glutamate (MSG) is E621. Nowhere near as long as these strings.

The real relevance of these number strings is that they are all taken from the number e, which is roughly equal to 2.71828183 (on a calculator do the inverse function of the natural log, ln, to the number 1 and you should get this). It's what's known to mathematicians as an irrational number, which basically means the numbers keep on going after the decimal point for ever. Whilst it's possible (hell, probable) that the E numbers for all sorts of food additives appear in this never-ending string of numbers somewhere it's almost certainly just coincidence and nothing to do with the game.

Check the threads that others have linked to for more info. Wink

e is not only irrational , it's also trancendental like pi, which makes it REALLY interesting. Very Happy

It's not just possible, or probable, it's definite. If a string of numbers is infinite, then all possible combinations will occur at some point, whether it's in the first 200, or next 3,000, or at some point after the 300,000,000,000 number. You can just keep looking and looking, and eventually it will happen. Funny thing, infinity, it can just keep going and going...

This is delightful, but it's also off topic. I expect we'll see more e though... it's appeared twice already, so we can expect it to pop up again. Maybe when PS gets started officially, the other conversations will appear.

off subject but

if i have an infinitely long string of random digits and remove all 3s whereever they appear, then i still have an infinite seires of digits but i can be certain that 333 does not appear

funny thing infinity Smile

Smile take you an awfully long time to remove all the 3s...
