Question (related to the IRC, but not specifically about it)

Well, I tried to use the IRC Java applet yesterday, and the bloody thing told me something along the lines of "unregistered trial version". I get the feeling that it may (or may not, who knows?) relate to my firewall. I'm using Windows XP SP1, and I have no idea how to open specific ports. This relates to both my theory about my problem here, and problems I'm having elsewhere: Does anyone know how, with SP1 firewall, to unblock specific ports, without needing a)an IP address or b )to re-enter it for each service you want those ports open for?
