[OFF TOPIC] Question about the forum Is there a way to be notified when a new thread is created in this forum?
When I post in a thread, I can choose to be notified of replies in that thread,
but the only way I have to see if new threads ahave been posted is to actually get my browser over here and read.
I'd *love* to have an e-mail telling me: Hei so-and-so just posted a new thread in <forum_name>. The subject is <thread_subject>.
Or something like that.
Thanks in advance,
F.O.R.

Unfortunately, I don't think there is. It may be possible to create some sort of PHP mod which enables this, but you'd have to talk to Spacely about it.
Mmm, we need an UF desktop-toolbar-add-on-uber-gadget to alert us of new posts as they happen....
Any volunteers?!

Thanks for the reply.
If it was perl or C#, I'd volunteer
Then again, I might learn PhP during the holidays; if that happens I'll get back to you and volunteer.

RSS Feed There is an RSS Feed of the Forum (look for the little orange boxes at the bottom of the page on the list of PS threads). You can use that to subscribe in a Feed Reader of your choice. Many are available for free. (I use bloglines, a web based service, www.bloglines.com). Bloglines puts a small icon in the corner of my firefox window when there is something new, be it from these forums or other feeds (blogs, news sites, etc) that I subscribe to.
I have it set to notify me of all new posts in the PS section as well as a couple of other ARGs I am following. Then I scroll thru all the messages and read the ones of particular interest. It doesn't work perfectly (some duplication of posts -- they show up in the feed more than once) but it works pretty well overall.
I guess this is not quite as good as email, but if you use Thunderbird as your email program (free from mozilla.org), you can also have RSS feeds along with your email. I've not used that feature, but I have heard it is great.

You can already get an RSS feed for new topics here and for new posts here .
All you'd need is to get some RSS reader gadget to monitor the feeds for you on your desktop or to write a script (wouldn't have to be PHP) that would send you an email.
Edit - Apparently we posted that at the same time kirstenhill. Great minds think alike I guess...

Thanks for the replies and RSS suggestions.
I didn't realize we have RSS feeds for the forums.
Heck, it might be the first good reason I have to actually use my RSS reader
And yes, I could write a script to send me e-mails once the reader detects new feeds.
Thanks again,
F.O.R.

I personally suggest Sharpreader. Its really good, and comes bundled with Slashdot, CNet and Wired news, all of which are great feeds

At work, I've tried Albion, and it seems to have built-in e-mail forwarding, in case anyone cares.
I might look at alternatives here at home.
