[OOG] Billboard that looked in-game in Manchester (UK)

I am new to this having recently seen the Firebox advert for perplexcity and searched for this before posting and couldnt find anything, so apologies if its already covered elsewhere. I was in Manchester on Tuesday 21st Dec and noticed an odd looking billboard whilst waiting for a tram at Manchester Picadilly station. There were no obvious indications of what the "advert" was for, but the picture was of a black cube on a pedestle in front of a shop with the word LOST written in the window of the shop. Unfortunately I didnt have a camera with me (was 200 miles away from home on business), but memorised the details in the picture. If anyone is interested I'll put up more details, also if you want to see it for yourself it was at the tram terminal at Manchester Picadilly station.

Edit: Out of game, ah well - Wishi-san

There's a webcam pointing in that direction, but the billboard is not visible. Sad

I didnt expect so much interest, but heres the details:

The picture has a white pedestle with a black cube sat on top. Only one face of the cube is visable. There red text on the cube, which was very small, and I need glasses, but appeared to say "you are here". The text was all in lower case and "you are" was above "here" (dont know if thats important). Next to the pedestle (to the left as you are looking at the picture) is a man with light brown hair playing what appears to be a cello. Behind this is a shop window. Now in the shop window in large letters (red or orange) is the text "LOST". Now more interestingly is what can be seen in the shop window, as it is a reflection of the street and this gives away the location. As well as a few pedestrians (the details of which I cannot remember) these are two signs. When I first looked at the signs I thought ones said "teerts semaj" and the other "NOITATS NEDRAG". Now bearing in mind this is the reflection in a window, this gives James Street and Garden Station and a quick look on Google gives Covent Garden Station on James Street, which for those not familiar with the names is in London.

Now not sure if can post links on this (someone could enlighten me though) -

www.streetsensation.co.uk/covent/js_east.htm

gives a photo of the east side of the street. The shop which has "LOUD" in the window looks like the shop in the billboard (even to the point where the "LOST" message looks similar). Also looks like the train station in the reflection, basically its the shop across the road from Covent Garden Station.

Sorry if there are any inaccuracies in my description, having to do it from memory. If someone else can get to Picadilly to take a picture, you need to go to the terminal where you get the tram to either Bury or Altringham, then as you enter it directly across the track. It stands out a fair bit and I only really noticed it because there were huge delays on the trams and didnt have much else to do.

Edit: Feel free to post links - Wishi-san

It would be good if someone could get a picture. Also if anyone knows James Street in London... there might be something there.

On the subject of the poster, what a great (pun intended) find! I can't make it to Manchester before next week due to Xmas obligations (though it's not too far away should the need arise for someone to head over there another time) so I'm glad there's others able to do this.

This does sound like it's in-game and a poster campaign is beyond even the Sable + Shuck ad campaign, so this bodes very well for the game itself once it gets going.

Interestingly, front that says LOUD on it isn't a shop; it's offices and seems to be the only non-retail establishment on the street. Anyone know what companies work there? I'm not sure how to find this out more efficiently than going to visit the place...

The thing that I found most interesting was the obscurity of it. If I hadnt seen the advert in the Firebox catalogue to have looked this far first, it wouldnt have meant anything to me. There was nothing on there that indicated to go anywhere other than the fact that it appears to be on James Street. Being new to these kinds of games, is it expected that the game space is only partially and not completely web based - I know I should probably read an FAQ! Wink

They are alternate reality games and therefore take place over a variety of mediums not just the web. Phone calls, real world events, etc and Syzygy looks like it might take this to even bigger scales than previous games.

Technically not, S&S has adverts created with the running theme of the Devil.

What I meant is that I haven't seen any of the Stella ads on a billboard. What's more, the ads have (in some magazines) been followed by URLs that redirect to S+S or H*. While the Stella ads can stand alone as an ad campaign the URLs are clearly only in-game. Until this game, those ads have been about the biggest (or at least highest profile) trailhead that any ARG I'm aware of has run. Now the PPC PMs are running ads in Firebox and The Times, leaving postcards all over the world, and (possibly) running billboard ads. All of which implies that this game is gonna set new standards for the scale of ARGs in general. And that makes me want to do a little happy dance Very Happy

Looks like the LOUD office may be located at 15 James St. Oasis is at 13 James St. and French Connection is at 11 James st. according to their web sites.

As for ads, Sharp did some television ads which had imagery from the Sacred Urns game and directed people to moretosee.com, which directed to morewasseen.com.

Still, I billboard just for this game without advertising anything else and not even particularly advertising the web site is very interesting. Razz
