A few new ideas (possibly)?

Another newbie sticking his nose in but I've been watching for a little while after being enlightened by the IT boffins where I work. Having been baffled by the science/maths that some are using to try and make progress, I've restorted to good old speculation and coincidence.

Firstly, going way back to the first set of images from Sentes letter, the 959 on the £50 note comes up in google as being a Internet Encylopedia reference for FTP spec
http://www.freesoft.org/CIE/RFC/959/

Nothing unsual except it got me thinking about the dates, 179, 148 possibly 1 from Taversen Square. Could there be other numbers that help make up a server address or and FTP site where further information can be downloaded or a password to access staring us straight in the face?
I have kind of tried but I'm no internet clever clogs so I'm sure my wild speculation could be seized upon by those with more knowledge.

Secondly, the postcard. Having looked at Adrian Hons pictures (a link was posted somewhere in another thread, the skyline of Philadelphia is not looking unlike that in the painting.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/adrianhon/1097356/
Which a random guess could attribute PCPS to Philapelphia City Postal Service? Who knows, I'm sure many locals might discredit this.

Thirdly while browsing the Postcard link regarding Houston, a quick search later led me to Asheville University in North Carolina, where the admissions phone number extension is 2210 (i think extension is correct). I know Chapel Hill and Asheville are miles apart but are there any postcards around Asheville seeing as they have a Uni connection.

Not sure if any of the random theories have been brought up so far, but couldn't find the doing a search. What any or none of it means who knows, but I just decided to get it off my chest.

cheers dudes much luck etc...

Hey Sigh, welcome to the board.

To address your points, first up I'd never thought of checking numbers against the RFC list. For non-techie types, whenever a new communication protocol is developed the developers list the details in an RFC - short for Request For Comments - so that it can be peer-reviewed. The RFC gives all the details anyone who wanted to implement the protocol (i.e. make some software or hardware that used that protocol) would need.

FTP is short for File Transfer Protocol and before the web was invented it was the main protocol over which files were transferred. It's still in common use today, for example when I upload files to my web server I use FTP . Out of interest, the web runs over HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) and the relevant RFCs are 1945 (v1.0), 2068 (v1.1) and 2616 (v1.1) so if these numbers crop up then maybe it's a further clue.

All machines on the internet have an address which can be expressed in decimal as 4 groups of 3 digits called an IP (Internet Protocol) address, e.g. 255.255.255.255. The largest these numbers can be is 255 (because this is the largest number we can count to with 8 bits, starting from 0) so it's possible that those numbers Sigh mentions are part of an IP address. However, we need a couple more numbers and an order to arrange them in.

All interesting speculation though.

As for the postcard resembling Philadelphia, my personal instinct is that it's just an abstract image of a city and not any city in particular. And I think you might be stretching a little bit with the university phone extension - there's hundreds of universities all over the world and I'd say there's a pretty good chance that 2210 is an extension number of something or other in most of them. Still, I could be wrong and it's that sort of lateral thinking that counts in these games. Good work!

Dude, all I know for sure is the phrase "I'm no internet clever clogs" is probably one of the funniest things I'll hear this week. Good on you!

Cheers guys for blowing my own self deception out of the water. The more you think about it the plausible it seems, yay for an overactive imagination.

However I do know a little of internet noodling so i'm not a complete donut. I'm just not prone to dabbling in the dark forces of the wee little dwarfs that program all that we see. As for NC all I can say is that any mathematical conundrum that comes my way I attempt but then decide I realise my self worth and decide I have something more important I should be doing.

Alas I just continue to watch with anticipation and see what comes next from the feverish insanity of Mr Hon et al.

Cheers again dudes have a blow out new year I'm off out tonight cos New Year in Leeds sucks and don't get arrested, wait a minute what am I saying....
