INFO: the image in the moon at chasingthewish.com

The image in the moon at www.chasingthewish.com is a Greek coin (see CD detailed case info for a picture of the actual coin).

A little info on the these coins--

It's the reverse side of a tetradrachm, more commonly called an "owl". The Greeks were very original, it seems.

The obverse side is an image of Athena, patron goddess of Athens... Athens being the origin of the coin. It seems to be from the High Classical period, but I'm not an expert. I emailed a picture to a coin appraiser to get his opinion on the date(s). For now, consider it 5th century b.c. (compare it to the similar coin at http://www.lawrence.edu/dept/art/buerger/catalogue/030.html)

The reverse side of the coin, or the part we see in the moon, contains the owl, an olive leaf (note: the olive was Athena's tree), a cresent moon (Athena was also associated with the moon), and the letters AOE.

AOE = alpha theta epsilon or A th e, which is short for "Athens."

It struck me that the coin(s) might have some sort of significance as being antiquities, so I emailed the Hollow Needle, inquiring as to if they deal in ancient coins.

I don't know what might come of it, but there's my day's work.

Namaste,
Lotus

Embarassed
Aw, spoiled my fun... and I thought I was being useful. That's what I get for coming into the game 3 weeks late.

p.s. Anyway, the coin appraiser emailed me back this morning. Anyone interested in what he had to say?

If it's new, might as well post it in the Interaction forum. Smile
