[book promotion] vilewatch

www.vilewatch.com is an extensive promotion for the book The Black Crusade by Richard Harland.

It all started for me with a trip to the library. I opened up a book and a handwritten note fell out.
Quote:
Yes, its me, Martin Smythe! They've driven me underground but they'll never stop me spreading the word! The conspiricy of vileness must be defeated! You'll understand when you read the Smorta manuscript in The Black Crusade. The bookshops are trying to sell it as fiction, but I've hidden a true copy in this very library. It's not a library book, but yours to take + own - and spread the word! This is one of two messages. I believe that fate will lead the right person to The Black Crusade!!!!

I've hidden it next to "The Crusades" on the non-fiction shelves at 909.07 OLD
I'm being watched-must vanish

Hope flared for an instant as the note sounded rather arg-like. At first I thought it was just an impressive library treasure hunt however the librarians were quite bewildered. The free book was not on the shelf, so my hunt begins for a bookstore that has it in stock. Further investigation has led me to the website of the author of The Black Crusade www.richardharland.net

www.vilewatch.com is further promotion of the book and claims that many more similar handwritten notes have been placed in all kinds of places in eastern Australia (namely Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria). You can communicate with the characters via email and send in sighting reports of the elusive Martin Smythe.

So, for all of the other aussies here, keep your eyes open for handwritten notes tucked away in odd corners. Smile

Too many stickers to count

I now own the book, and can confirm it is as bizarre as the website and just as enjoyable.

There is definitely activity happening. There is rapid response on the Vilewatch website from Donna and some of the 12 High Watchers. So go ahead, ask Donna a question, you'll probably be amused by the response.

I have received the Vilewatch.com stickers, actually over 200 of them! Shocked
I'm open to any suggestions on how best to use the stickers that don't involve payphones - someone already had that idea Very Happy
Quote:
Our 'Vilewatching Needs You!' stickers have upset TriTel, the phone company, whose Managing Director has emailed Martin Smythe personally at his martin {at} vilewatch.com address. Whether our founder has checked out this particular email (addressed politely but threateningly to 'Dear Martin') we don't know, but we can tell TriTel that Martin is far too elusive to be brought before a court. And what jail in the world could hold him?

Of course, Martin has nothing to do with stickers, which we mail out for free to individual vilewatchers. (See below and on the Vilebusters page). But we don't tell anyone to stick their stickers on TriTel's pay phones! That would be illegal! Tch! Tch!! We only encourage vilewatchers to be as creative with their stickers as possible.

The letter I received with the stickers hints at the possibility of Vilebuster participants to become part of the committee:
Quote:
...the whole system of 12 High Watchers is too unwieldly - we need a tighter, smaller, truly revolutionary committee...

Vilewatch update - Kent Lawson

Kent Lawson has appeared on the scene and he is quite a character.

Kent Lawson wrote:
My name is Kent Lawson. I am a Doctor of Biology and a botanist, currently associated with a university which you will understand my not naming, the research which has brought me to my present location being commercially sensitive. I will tell you, however, that location is a shanty town in the Pantanal do Rio Negro, an area of western Uruguay that for half the year is fertile plains, and for the other a series of swamps, marshes and shallow lakes. I tell you this because of all the wretched places you have never heard of, this is surely the last you otherwise would.

Myself and my co-worker, Dr Vida Marajó, arrived some weeks ago, at the height of the flooding. I am writing this on my wireless laptop in the shambolic excuse for a residence we have been alotted on this temporary island; the roof and walls shield us from neither the rain, insects nor the scrutiny of the locals, who grow cash crops and graze cattle the other half of the year but at present have not much to amuse them. This and their isolation is doubtless what has shaped their celebrations so peculiarly.

...

Kent seems to have landed himself in trouble, squarely on the toe:
Kent Lawson wrote:
It's in my hand now. I see the glistening, the deliquesence beginning. Oh, delicious. Just a little more...

Read and see more here.

I'm anticipating further updates from Kent and Vida soon.
