I asked Josh a bit more about Alyssa and the situation regarding her boyfriend's death... he responded:
Quote:
[snip]

Alyssa, she told us the first day to call her that, but she was
pretty unique that way. Most other teachers demanded we call them
Mr. Mrs. Ms. (or the occasional Dr.) She was pretty cool like that,
always seemed to want to make friends and not just be a teacher.

Her Boyfriend? To be honest, I haven't kept up with the local news.
There was some newspaper articles a while back that said they were
still had some leads but it looked like robbery was the prime motive.
Noone was ever charged, but they did put a thorough search on Alyssa
during that time, from what she tells me.

That key symbol on the picture is very troubling. Consider, for a
moment, that whatever put that on his picture also put it into my head
during a dream. If it can do that, what else could it do to me? I'm
not sure I really want to start answering questions like that -- a man
only has so much courage!

The only think I can think of is that the number 13 must be important
somehow. What is so special about 13?

Either (a) it's a clue, or (b) Josh's character is speculating. But either way, what IS so special about the number 13???

Well... 13 has always been a number concerning the idea of "luck" and usually, but not always, points to bad luck. We really can't know for sure what it means yet, but I'm guessing that we'll know when the time comes.

Well, here's the wikipedia entry on Thirteen: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thirteen

How could the same image appear on the defaced picture and in Josh's dreams? He defaced the image, duh. I'm totally in on the "josh is the killer" angle.

I think the general consensus is that "Whoever is sending me dreeeam messages must have defaced the image!" ... although, of course, "josh is the killer" might seem more logically sound... Razz

Update in the blog: Josh visited Alyssa, didn't go great... but there's been an update (correction) to the grid puzzle. The 52, 2nd from the last number, ought to have been 57. Okay, now the heck what to do with it. ...? Razz

Grids and keys and dreams, oh my! This would have become my whole
blog, if I had any interest in sharing with the world that, not only
do I have very similar codes to those on a hacked website, but that
now I'm receiving *more*!

This one came out a bit more complex -- I don't know where the extra
detail came from, but the layout seems to indicate this one might
provide some insight to the grid that came yesterday. Without knowing
what the message means (which is why I have Friends like you!) there's
no way to be certain though.

The original puzzle:

11H3333T   XxXx    XxXx     xX
11I  HIR       8x9x    8x5x5  x4

11T33EEN Xx6x7xXxXx6x7xXxXxXx1xX

So I guess this tells us that the 13 and number-grid puzzles are definitely related. I guess the 13 is supposed to be the "key" to the other? Or other way around? The ascii art on "13" looks like a key detail, while the art on the new one (above above) looks like a keyhole. Hmmm?

Email Josh and offer to help, and he'll add you to his email list.

Or just see them posted here, at unforums.

An earlier email from Josh wrote:
Finally, the information I share in my emails doesn't need to be just between you and I. I'm just concerned about putting too much information where *anybody* can read it. I have to have a life after this, you know! So if you think there's someone you can trust who's too shy to email me (or hasn't figured out my easy email puzzle!) feel free to share.

I'm starting to see this now.

We have two keys: One "13" key from Josh's dream and one larger "13" key from the image on /~appleharbour/. The key ascii art of the key whole indicating that this is the puzzle we need to unlock using the other keys. The stuff on the right of the key hole looks like a cross section of what's inside.

So to make this puzzle easier for everyone, here's this for reference.

Also notice that the characters directly to the right of the keyhole are themed "52/FIFTYTWO" Similar to the 13 deal.

So I guess the thing to do now is to compare the lock with the keys and go from there. Good luck everyone.[/url]

I've stared at this puzzle for so long I think I'm going to be dreaming about it myself.

I honestly can't see any other similarities other than the X -> Integer deal. I am wondering about the 00+ and 13+.

How this all fits with the grid of numbers? I have no clue. I'm really thinking right now Josh needs to start dreaming formulas or I'm not sure we're going to get anywhere fast.

Anyone else see anything I'm not?

Something stable like two, or odd like three... okay, so how is this supposed to help us solve the other two puzzles (well, three - two more key-y ciphers and the grid of numbers)... divide it into even and odd numbers? Or something??

New email from Josh

Just received this email. The Subject read: How to kill a gentle soul.

Quote:
Alyssa called me this morning, sobbing uncontrollably. I'm not sure
how she got my number, but I'm glad she was able to reach me. She
didn't sound good at all.

Through her gasps for breath she told me that someone did something to
her site again. She thinks it was revenge for her earlier threat, and
now she's sorry she ever posted it. She was going to just delete the
whole thing but chose instead to beg for them to stop.

It was the most sad, pathetic thing I have ever heard. If you've
never heard the heartbroken sobs of one tormented over the loss of a
loved one, may you never have to. I felt myself tear up in sympathy,
but I knew I had to be strong for her.

I told her that she needed to get away from it, that she needed to
forget the website and these awful people who won't leave her alone
and find a place where she could put her life back together. I
suggested if she had any family nearby, to go stay with them for a
while, but she didn't feel like seeing anyone or leaving her house.
She even said that They (meaning the police) might think she was
trying to run away.

By the time she was ready to hang up, she had at least stopped crying.
I'm glad I was able to do that much for her, but I feel so sorry that
this is happening and I feel so powerless to do anything. She brings
out the protective instinct, that makes you want to drop everything to
help her.

My girlfriend had better *never* hear about this. I'm sure this would
trigger the Violent Jealousy gene women carry, and I'd be lucky to
survive without needing reconstructive surgery.

--Josh

P.S. forgot to mention... http://home.earthlink.net/~appleharbor has changed. When i sourced the page, it said the page contained two pictures - "images/town.gif" and "helpme/sayonara.jpg". Could mean something, but could also be me reading too much into things.
