Bungie Makes Marathon Trilogy Free Since there is so much related to Halo in the Bungiverse, I figured some of you might want to know about this. Bungie decided to make the Marathon Trilogy free (instead of open-source) yesterday. That means you can legally play it now.
I believe you could play it before since it was open source, but I never found a good page full of Windows instructions about it until today. Check out this link for more info on downloading Marathon and playing it in Windows. This instruction set is for basically playing the original files via emulation or a Marathon engine port for windows (there is also a UT engine floating around out there, but this doesn't include that).
It's free, most computers can run it, and you don't need any software to play it that can't be downloaded via that link. Enjoy!

That's awesome. I spent weeks looking for all three online before Christmas. Guess I just had to be a little patient.

Yes, Aleph One supports play over the internet. Just the thing for those without Xboxes.
I should have posted this - I posted it on just about every other forum I frequent but for some reason didn't think of posting it here. Oh well - it got posted here anyway

Once I get it working I may play a little bit...I've tried to use AlephOne before but could never quite figure it out, and didn't have the time to.

Same here, that's why I posted this...the link in my above post to "Marathon for Windows for Dummies" pretty much spells it out though. I was able to d/l and install in mere minutes, and it seems to work just fine (though I didn't go any further than the title screen in each game, yet).

ok that is sweet... All I've ever heard is word of mouth about marathon, and all the names that keep getting mentioned from the marathon universe just twist my tongue... thanks for the link, this may satisfy me for some time

Marathon... windows.. YES!
Thank you, Bungie, and whoever made this page, and the person who made this post who's name I'm too lazy to scroll down the page to look at!
Time to see if I can get this working...

No, if I remember the name correctly, it's HK-50.

Mine keeps saying that the "Images" "Sounds" and other files are installed incorrectly whenever I open it up.
EDIT: That "Marathon for Windows" site explains how to make the Marathon files work with Aleph One, but doesn't say how to get Aleph One working period, or what to do if it doesn't function correctly. Can anyone post step by step instructions of what they did?

sure.
For marathon one, special edition, all I had to do was unzip, it was set up with the files in the right places already.
For Marathon 2&3, I had to unzip A1, then unzip the music/map/sound files into the A1 root directory (i have three seperate A1 installations on my pooter, each in a different folder...one per game).
I too got the error message you listed for one of the games (i don't remember which). Take a look at the directory, and you will notice that the maps unzipped into a subdirectory by default. All you need to do is move the files in that folder back to the A1 root directory. That will get the game working correctly, and you can just delete the folder which used to contain the data files.

For some reason it still doesn't work. Aleph One only opens for me if those files are in the correct directory, but it still tells me that they are incorrectly installed. Do I need to turn my file sorting system off or something, because this is starting to get frustrating. I am having the same problem with the MarathonF, Marathon2F, and MarathonInfinityF files from Bungie.

Well, the only thing I know is that the data files must be in the same folder as the alephone.exe file (not a subfolder within that main folder). Aside from that, perhaps you downloaded the wrong alephone? Did you get this alephone file (http://voxel.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/marathon/AlephOne-20050118.zip)?
And for the scenario files, it should be from (http://files3.bungie.org/trilogy/marathon2.zip).
If you are indeed working with these files, and each individual data file is visible in the same folder as the alephone.exe file, then something is officially wonky in a way that is beyond me. Sorry!
