[Halo 2] 'The Next Halo' Is Being Worked On! Over at Gamespy.com in one of the news articles, a single line of text made me almost jump out of my chair for joy.
Quote:
... This is basically the case with Halo 2, but rather than have intelligent discussions about what might happen next, or what they want to see in the next game, some people say they feel gypped and are threatening to boycott the next game. Personally, I think Bungie did the right thing, and I'm willing to bet that those people who are pissed off now will be the first in line for Halo 3. And when will that be, you ask? Well, I have it on authority from Microsoft that the next Halo will be coming out...
Now, they don't say it's being worked on, they don't say when, but they say another one is coming out. And if my faith in Bungie holds, it will be their next game.
Still, however, I find it strange that instead of saying "Halo 3" is on the way, it's "the next Halo". Could just be me reading too much into it, but that's what ARGers do. ^^;;

I think it's gonna come down to two things: whether or not Bungie REALLY REALLY doesn't want to do another Halo versus Microsoft's demand for a new one. Considering that Bungie probably isn't that conflicted about making a new Halo, I'd say it's safe to bet that Halo 3/"The Next Halo"/whatever you want to call it will come out sometime.

Hopefully they let us play a Grunt this time. That would be fun.

Well of course they are going to work on a third Halo game. Bungie has over 500 years of history made up in the Halo-verse, and it's the only franchise driving xbox and especially xbox live sales, so it's not a matter of "if". The question is when. Will they wait 3 years leaving us an empty husk of a game with a cliffhanger worse than most daytime soaps? Probably. I've read on unficiton and other places that the next game Bungie is working on is NOT Halo related. I think it was code named "Pheonix" or something like that.
I would of course love to be wrong and [SPEC] hope to see Halo 3 (or whatever they'll call it) as a launch title for the Xbox 2.[/SPEC]

Well, as anyone who's followed the videogame industry for any amount of time can tell you, a code name doesn't necessarily translate directly to a title. The Gamecube was named "Project Dolphin" for years. And XboxNext may very well not be the name of Microsoft's next console. "Phoenix" might in fact be a project name for the next Halo game. Perhaps in it we'll see the rebirth of the Forerunners?

i wonder if halo 3 is going to be a FPS. Wouldn't it be interesting if it was something else?

wasn't Halo 1 originally going to be an RTS game? Some different genres could be really interesting.
I can see it now... PuzzleHalo... fill in the ring with blocks before it kills us all!

I always had this freaky idea of a Halo MMO. THAT would be awesome fun. XD

Pheonix was a name-in-progress for a project that Bungie either was or was not working on simultaneously with Halo 1. Everything I've read since then has led me to believe that Bungie either never had that project going or it never got far past the extremely early design stage.
Either way, it's old news and probably not what they're working on.

Phoenix? Geez, that is WAY way back. And Bungie has not said that they won't be working on another Halo game, they said that they don't know what they're working on next. The whole rumor about Bungie not making another Halo game was unfounded, and the quote I gave came from one of the biggest game websites on the internet... I somehow doubt Microsoft would let Bungie make anything OTHER than another Halo game.

Spec:
The current most likely name for the new X-Box is X-BoxNext. Could this mean that the next Halo will be for X-BoxNext?
Just my guess.

The latest EGM has an interview with Bungie which confirms that Phoenix is dead and that the next Bungie title will NOT be a Halo game.. They did mention that they could possibly work on two titles simultaneously though...
It's actually a pretty decent read--they talk about the cliffhanger ending and other things like what we may or may not see added to Halo 2 via download.

There's so many coliding comments on what the next game is going to be it's crazy... I don't know WHAT to believe.
As for what the next XBOX is going to be called, the name of the program running on it is called "Dolphin" apparently...

Yes, Halo was originally a kind of spinoff of Myth, an RTS game. Whereas Myth was a fantasy game, Halo was to be a futuristic RTS game. They even had early demos where little marines ran around at your command.
Phoenix never really got off the ground, but Bungie says that's what they're working on next. Everything Bungie's made so far is great, so I'm not really that put off that they're not working on Halo 3 next. In fact, maybe it's time for gamers to take a break from Halo and let the platform and genre advance a little before getting another Halo.

There is no small amount of irony in that.
