EMAIL SAM: hints, ads, help (Sam Greene)

I wrote to this to Sam Green(e):
Quote:
Hi, Sam. I know that you're worried about Dale. I am, too.

He sent me an email asking me to help, and I'm not sure exactly how to, yet.

Don't know if you know, but he told me how to get into his email at
synthasia. I was looking at his mail, trying to figure out what to do next
and I saw that you were concerned, too. You mentioned in your mail on 3/2
that you had a page yet to be posted.

One thing I've learned from looking deeper into this is that Dale's got
some enemies, and it might not be a good thing for you to post publicly
stuff that might help them find him. I think he got into money trouble and
they want to collect.

Anyway, can you share that page with me, and maybe we can work on this
together to see what we can do?

You can reach me at this email, or at Yahoo or AIM under the name dmax801.

Thanks,
Dan

and a few days later I got this:

Quote:
Dan:
Listen, I hope you can be trusted as I really need a friend. I did post that
page. Have you found it? I'm beginning to get very worried about what has
happened to Dale but it seems like everyone is watching me like a hawk lately.
I'm not really sure why. The Mayor and his flunky that attorney keep popping
their heads in here, like once an hour and he's been insisting on reading all
of the e-mail replies that are sent out from the website because of the
situation and the impending Press Conference. This is one of the first chances
I've had to "sneak" out a message to someone who may be able to help. I'm not
sure how many more I'll be able to send before one of them sticks their head
back in. I've actually tried to put a few key little hints in my last series of
messages to let people know who they may be able to trust, because there's at
least one other person around here we probably can trust. Hopefully they'll
notice the missing letter and tie it into what my "associate" has been doing.
I'm sorry I'm being vague but until I'm absolutely positive who I can trust,
I'm playing the cards tight against my chest.
One last important thing. Dale gave me access to his website and computer
network a few days after he was released from Greatwater because he told me he
needed someone to help him with it while he was recuperating and grieving. Of
course, I was glad to help. Even though I somehow feel like I'm betraying a
trust, I've decided I need to access anything I can find there and am going to
do it as soon as possible.
I'll be in touch.
Sam Greene

Nice. Onward!
(Please let me know how you want to respond, so we can keep his trust that this isn't being shared in public - even though it is...)

Subject: Re: Ad Pricing

Dear Mr. SpaceBass:
Thanks for your inquiry about advertising on the Aglaura NJ website. We're always glad to welcome new advertisers to our site and believe that our site can deliver your message to the local Aglaura and surrounding area consumer base like no one else can.

I'm pretty familiar with almost all of the local Aglaura businessmen. Are you new to the area or perhaps advertising a national or regional service or business? Please let me know because our rates are dependent upon this. We offer a discount to local businesses.

If you can provide me the details of your business name, location, contact information, and so on and what product or service you will be advertising on the Aglaura website, I will be more than happy to provide an advertising proposal to you with rates and details applicable to your situation.

Thanks,
Sam Greene

My initial thought was that the associate he is referring to is Wes Keeler from EOTW, so I went through all of Sam's emails to Dale and found three instances of what could be "missing letters"...
    freakin' - missing G
    'cause - missing B and E
Any thoughts?

My reply will include

I'll acknowledge that we did, indeed, get his message about who the other safe person is.

When he posted the graffitti picture, the one he told us that he would, he snuck in source code hints. We found it, and it led us to a page that he made with Digitalis and AGP on it.

So, we got his message.

I'll send that tomorrow, and do we have other things to tell him?

I wonder if Wes Keeler IS Digitalis. Anyone know if he has 6 fingers? Smile

I agree that this is probably the safe person too. It makes sense. This portion of his message still doesn't quite make as much sense to me though.

Hints in his last series? I can only find a couple (maybe 2?) of his messages. Are we missing some messages he sent out to people not on one of the forums? Did we ever find hints or just found the source code? And the missing letter? Did we miss something and solve the puzzle without the hints? Is he referring to the ppb, ppc, ppd, etc we had to change the ppa.gif to to get the rest of the pieces of the digitalis/agp message? How did we find the ppb.gif, ppc.gif, etc. anyway? I couldn't find an explaination posted anywhere so I'm assuming it happened in chat. Was it just luck in trying different names or was there some method behind it? Maybe I'm reading too much into it. Just don't like loose ends. Wink

questions to ask

Good point about the "letter" reference. I don't understand it either.

I don't have a problem saying 1) I got part of your message (so we're not idiots) but 2) some of it didn't make sense.

I'll try to avoid any mention of a "we" here, so as to not muddy the waters. If he's jumpy, let's not make it worse.

Letter sent around noon 3/7. Waiting...

All of the gifs were included in the coded text found in the source code of the tempdata2 page. The full decode can be found here.

Thanks Aveena. I only found a partial decode I guess, which only showed the one ppa.gif.

More email from Sam

"enaxor" from CD posted this:

Quote:
I just got this from Sam. He must have been researching Ong's Hat at
one time. Don't tell him I told you. Wink

Roxanne:
OK, promise not to tell anyone at all about this, OK? That purple or
blue x you mentioned. It was a left over from the map I, uh, borrowed to
make the one for the Aglaura site. You see, shortly after I got this
job and moved into the area, I was using an online service and looking
for the location of something I heard about not too far from Aglaura.
This was when I was just getting involved with the site, while Dale was
finishing building it. I have to admit I was still a little overwhelmed
and inexperienced at that time. One of the things he asked me to do for
him was to dig up a local map somewhere and put it into a
format that we could use for the site. So when I was searching online
and this map popped up, I thought "Bingo!" there's my map. A quick right
click and save and I was in business. I never even thought about that
damn x and no one, I mean no one, around here has ever questioned it.
Weird, huh? I guess it sometimes takes an outsider's eyes to see things
that are right in front of your face everyday.
Anyway, thanks for pointing it out. Like you noticed already, I've
removed the
x.

X

That sort of this really annoys me:
1) Legit explanation, and we should drop it or
2) More cover up?

This is like when we see typos - are they important, or not.

More from Sam - graffiti, missing letter, more

I wrote:

Sam, thanks for getting back to me. Radio silence scares me, since I don't
know WHAT it means...

Quote:

that page. Have you found it?

Yes, it's been found. Took a little thinking and some construction, but
the page got put together and it showed whom to trust. Thanks for passing
it along. Dylan said "Don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind
blows." I say, "Sometimes a weathervane helps."

"associate" has been doing.

That "missing letter" comment throws me and makes me worry that I haven't
seen all your messages. Not sure what you mean by that, if you mean
missing email letter or missing letter of the alphabet in a message. If
you can, 'splain that one a little more. I know we have to talk in circles
sometimes. Of course, sometimes, there are folks who never get around to
finishing the circles that they start.

Quote:
Even though I
somehow feel like I'm betraying a trust, I've decided I need to access
anything I can find there and am going to do it as soon as possible.

Makes sense. Rather than take the time to evaluate it on site, you could
ftp it somewhere or email it to someone for safekeeping - and dissection
later. Lemme know if I can help with that. I've got some storage space we
can use. It would certainly be better to have it archived in a totally
separate drive or network from where you are, just in case.

I'll tell you my Life Rule #2: "Get the data, and the data will
make the decision for you." I think the only way to understand this is to
know more. You and I are both worried about Dale and what's going on. I
think we need to use that common ground to work forward, and you'll see by
my actions that your trust is well founded.

and Sam replied
Quote:
Dan:
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you but things are absolutely crazy
around here lately. I feel kind of like I fell asleep one night and woke up in
a different world or something.
Don't worry about the "missing letter" thing. I was talking about signing my
name "Green" instead of "Greene" in a series of "normal" e-mail responses I
sent out. It was Wes' idea, to somehow tie into a message he put on one of his
bumpersticker pictures about the "Green" man. Didn't really make sense to me at
the time but I went along with it because of feeling the need for some method
of finding out exactly who's in this with us, trying to help Dale. Seems I'm
doing a lot of that lately, going along with and getting involved with things I
don't really understand, I mean.
It's really funny you mention circles, too. Because they are turning up
everywhere around here it seems. Yeah, I'm talking about the graffiti that's
been showing up in the area lately. The Mayor and the police are holding
the "probably just kids" line but, I tell you what, they would have to be some
pretty fast and smart kids because nobody's been able to catch them or link any
evidence to anyone. And this town isn't really that big, so by now, with the
parents all alerted to it, how could local kids be getting out to be making the
fresh ones that have been appearing? Like the one I saw on Greatwater General
when I went by there to try and pick up Dale's effects. They didn't let me get
them but the girl did tell me some other people had been there not too long
before me, trying to do the same thing. For some reason though, she didn't want
to even describe them to me and got really nervous when I pressed her on it.
Damn, time's getting away from me tonight and I've got a lot to do yet. I'll be
in touch soon. I think I'm going to try and get into Dale's house tomorrow and
see what I can find that might help. Let me know if you come up with anything
in the meantime.

Numinous letter

The second letter from them sounds like they'll withdraw help. I asked Sam:
Quote:
Someone is trying to reach Dale, and since he's not responding they're implying that they're going to be unavailable to help him.

Since you can get to his mail, would you look at the two letters from "numinoustrail" tonight?

If you could respond that you've received the message and that you're grateful for the contact from the guides, then I think that would cover us until tomorrow, when he'll likely be set free.

Thanks! let me know more if you need more info.

Dan

Another comment from Sam in an email posted by "petulant" @collectivedetective

Quote:
I don't think I've seen this bit in any of the emails posted.

I got email from Sam and it contained the same info about Dale that
I've read here, but then had this on the bottom.

The graffiti thing is really starting to bother everyone around here,
especially the Mayor, probably because of his fixation on Aglaura's
image. My friend Wes is working on a few theories about the graffiti
and making a map of it too I think. The funny thing is, the Mayor's
ordered me to make one for him for his upcoming Online Press
Conference too. Maybe I'll just wait and use Wes'. That would be funny,
considering how the two of them feel about each other.
