[This is not Porn] New ARG? Puzzle?

In a different forum, I learned of an eerie photo gallery at www.thisisnotporn.com . It was vaguely eerie, just to make people wonder. I thought. Now there is a passworded section with a riddle and ascii text hidden in the background, forming some kind of picture. A new ARG? A puzzle? Help me out, people.

Edit by Addlepated - changed subject line for clarity.

Some weird stuff in from view source.

"Beware. Abandon hope, all who enter here."

and

"Alexander cut me
An Oracle predicted me
A future king tied* me
Say my name to clear your path."

At least thats what it looks like.

*edited to change led to tied

The Gordian knot ?

Goes with the not/not and Asia stuff?

Quote:
A story is told that Gordius, in Greek mythology, king of Phrygia, had the pole of his wagon fastened to the yoke with a knot that defied efforts to untie it. An oracle stated that he who untied this Gordian knot would rule Asia. According to legend, Alexander The Great simply cut the knot with his sword. Which was a non-trivial and quite an unexpected solution. Sure enough, he has conquered a good deal of Asia eventually reaching as far East as Northern India.

There is also some audio when you load the picture. It sounds like someone calling out numbers over a weak radio signal.

Is Alexander the one who ruled by the sword? or is there another user name for the login?

I think it's more a puzzle than a game. There's been a massive dissection (like, 800 messages worth) on another board:

I don't know if you've all got your popup blockers on but I noticed that something was being blocked and when not blocked only stays on for a little time.

Interesting bits from the source...

Title: SAVE HIM!!
Viewable Text: HELP I AM DROWNING!!

In the style tag there is this:

Code:

   font-size: 36px;
   color: #999999;

</style>

Unusual collection of numbers, which I guessed was ASCII codes. Converted this and got:
heebban olla vogala nestas hagunnan hinase hi(c) (e)nda thu uu(at) unbida(n) (uu)e nu

Quick search told me this was the phrase without the brackets:
hebban olla vogala nestas hagunnan hinase hic enda thu wat unbidan we nu

This is apparently a mixture of Latin, Basque and Dutch. There's some form of attempt to translate it here

I don't know if this has been covered in the gamefaqs topics but ah well Smile

There should be a countdown clock displayed, but it doesn't work for me. The source code indicates a finish time:
Code:
//ENTER BELOW THE DATE YOU WISH TO COUNTDOWN TO
later = new Date("Jun 6 2005 11:38:00");

Launching in 2005?!? I might have forgotten all about this by then -- just don't make me play a year-long pregame!

Unless it's a fun-filled, whirlwind-of-a-ride, super-great pregame as good as the game itself Smile

ouch! the puzzles are intriguing, but the volume and repetitiveness of the gamefaqs forums make my head hurt. There's some more discussion of thisisnotporn.com at

There's some form of attempt to translate it here

It all begins with love - the "probatio pennae"

In the Middle Ages, when pens were still made from feathers, scribes used to test their new quills on the pages of the book on which they were working at the time.

In 1932 an English academic in an Oxford library found a loose piece of parchment which had been used to reinforce the binding of a book, and on which, alongside a Latin inscription, a verse in Old Dutch has been immortalised as the so-called "probatio pennae".

This short text was written in around 1100 by a monk from West Flanders, living at that time in Rochester Abbey in the county of Kent in England. It would appear that he took up his new pen and wrote down the first thing that occurred to him. To make his text intelligible to others he wrote, word for word, the Latin translation above it:

hebban olla vogala nestas hagunnan
hinase hi(c) (e)nda thu
uu(at) unbida(n) (uu)e nu

"All the birds have started their nests
except me and you.
What are we waiting for now?"

Or

Have all birds started their nests
except me and you
so what are we waiting for?

I didn't solve it myself, but the gamefaq people worked out the username and passwd a while ago:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

username: Alexander
password: Gordian

[I.e what Caterpiller said]

So it's definitely a real puzzle of some kind, but whether it's a full ARG I'm not sure. Could just be a smaller-scale diversion. Either way, I'm keen.

The creator has admitted the existence of a game, and posted a further riddle at http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/genmessage.php?board=214&topic=14442172&page=7
[be warned - they solved it pretty quickly, so don't read the following messages unless you want to know the answer]
The creator is pleading intermittent net access as the reason it wasn't added to the main site. I'm going to put the riddle as a spoiler, since the gamefaq people are a bit ahead of us - there is more to puzzle through on thisisnotporn.

Anyway, here's the latest puzzle:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Okay, I the internet monkey didn't show today. I am using a semi-public computer.
Questions:

I have a list of the sites archived in favorites, I'll post a few of them as soon as SlowTech McGee gets back on his trained snail and slides over to give me internet.

The code has been fixed on the version on my machine. The references were due to using code from my other website and hitting a bug that didn't break them away from the templates once I started working on them.

Also, as I said my next puzzles will be harder. I'm not sure if you'll get them. Due to not having the pages up however I have decided to type out by had a hint/clue/puzzle from the next parts of the puzzle.
