[META] Discussion on typography

I thought to start this because I see other people with the same questions about the type styles. Sometimes the text style is noticeably different. I am not a typeographer, but I think we can create a CSS stylesheet to classify various styles, and then refer to them logically by those classes; perhaps we'll see a different or alternative message within styles. I'm just gonna do this one, and let you pick apart what looks wrong so we can settle on measurements and labels, then we'll need a list of all communications that appear in varying styles to be all inclusive. The following is the Marchant quote, which itself is actually an image - so we can only know the relative size of each style.

S Marchant Quote 148 AC

All text appears to be the same font-family, Garamond. The first and last lines are aligned: center, whereas the remaining lines are justified.

[1] "I HAD THOUGHT"
[2] "I trust what I see;
my eyes are my own."
[3] "MY SENSES ARE INFALLIBLE"
[4] "I WAS WRONG."
[5] "I can no longer trust that which I witness. I
shall not put stock in images lit up before me."
[6] "I MUST HOLD IT."
[7] "I MUST HAVE IT IN MY BARE HANDS."
[8] "-S. Marchant; 148 AC; City Archives"

1 ) relative font-size: 18?pt; font-variant: small-caps
2 ) relative font-size: 26?pt; font-variant: none
3 ) relative font-size: 18?pt; font-variant: small-caps
4 ) relative font-size: 26?pt; font-variant all-caps
5 ) relative font-size: 12?pt; font-variant: none
6 ) relative font-size: 26?pt; font-variant all-caps
7 ) relative font-size: 12?pt; font-variant all-caps
8 ) relative font-size: 10?pt; font-variant: none

The similarities:

These are by size in ascending order:
Font-size 10: #8
Font-size 12: #5, #7
Font-size 18: #1, #3
Font-size 26: #2, #4, #6

These are listed arbitrarily by style thnking that "none" leads to "small-caps" leads to "all-caps" when considering a progression. Pure speculation . . .
Font-variant none: #2, #5, #8
Font-variant small-caps: #1, #3
Font-variant all-caps: #4, #6, #7

Speculation #1:
Rememeber that the Sente Letter was in all-caps.
Imagine her/him saying the all-caps lines (#4, #6 & #7)
Scary huh.

maybe its just to emphasize different things? I must hold it in my hands bigger to give the print it out hint, in the newspapers to make it stand out against other classified ads....I think your reading waaaay too much into it tbh

But this is ARG spec... it's impossible to read too far into anything!

I think it's just to make it all fit nicely and look pretty. For example, in the Marchant quote the lines with fewer words on them are typed in a bigger face so that the line is the same length on the page (well, except for the bit where it goes wonky with the 'I' on I shall not put stock in images lit up before me).

Besides, it looks more interesting if they vary the size.

to be fair i dont *think* there's any hidden codes in it or anything, but i do think the typography aspect is important, and not just to make it look pretty. one thing it does is establish a signature 'look' to in-game communications that can get our attention and even possibly confirm somethings authenticity, much like the typography used in commercial branding.

the second thing i think it is deliberately used for is to highlight important parts of the text, its basic design rules that bigger things are more important, and heirarchy of typefaces and sizes is used everywhere to denote more or less important (or attention grabbing) bits of information.

so yeah, i might just be re-iterating stuff other ppl have said, but these were th reasons why i thought the type thing was important in the first place.

rach =)

Yeah - dig it. This very aesthetic is what separates good layout from poor layout. It's a cliche though to be "reading between the lines" so I am Smile Maybe it will add up over time. I guess what;s worth noting for now is that the type-size will be relative, but the variants of all-caps and small-caps are readily distinguishable across ads.

I want the anwers now Wink
