If the postcard needs to be completed before we can progress then why does Sente say on it 'More contact to follow'? And why does the form say 'when the time is right we'll be in contact again'? And the 'Patience is a necessary ingredient of genius' qhote for that matter. I can't imagine we'd be given this as deliberate misinformation. Though you have got me thinking that maybe there's something we need to do to kick off the full game. To that end, I stuck the long number into the form to see if anything happened. Couldn't remember if this had been done by anyone and it was quicker to repeat than to search. Sadly, just got the usual response page.

Also, I'd never noticed that the 22 and the 10 appear in the long number so that's interesting, though the relevance doesn't leap off the page at me right now....

There are two things which could also hint towards the postcard (ok, I really mean that number string) being entirely irrelevant:

Firstly the quote from Stephensons' Cryptonomicon- "One last thing - it all begins with AADAA...". As mentioned, the book is partially about a code which is believed to be encrypted, but turns out to be random.

The other is the use of the word "pareidolia", which is the process of looking for meaning when there isn't any...

Just a different spin for you.

There you go. An evening in a british pub. 8)

Yeah...in November, when I am old enough to legally enter a pub, I'll see if they have darts.

I remember my parents and some of their friends playing darts in Germany, but I was about five then. I also really sucked at it. It took me several tries just to hit the board. I've never been very coordinated.

Anyway, thanks for the explanation.

back to the topic

bump...

so has everyone entered their guesses?

or are we all just thinking that Sente has forsaken us?

at least we know that the design of the T-shirt that the winner will receive will be decided at the end of January. anyone who is a bit bored and wants to make a design, go for it.

about the contest generally see this thread

about ARGFest generally see

this combersome thread .

Well, in London, it's been the 22nd for...fourteen hours and ten minutes, now. No e-mails yet. This sucks. I really thought it would start today.

Wait for it. Ten-to-one, if it starts today, they'll do it as a prank, and send out the emails at 11:00 PM. =P

So has it started yet, or have we just moved from the pre-pre-game to the pre-game? How does one define the start of an ARG?

I say - it definitely has not started yet. I think this month (up to March 21st) is just going to be an intense campaign to get more people involved. It's a very reasonable move, if you think about it: how many non-ARGers got exposed to this game through firebox and Marketing Week ads that have long since forgot all about it? This way, they will bring yet more new people in, and those people will actually come in just in time for the game (as opposed to a year too early, ahem). I am expecting some big promo boom around the end of this "campaign" - just before the launch.

How does one define the start of an ARG? In other words, how will we know when this ARG has started? I think it will be when the new information that is released/we find stops being meta stuff (= help find the cube, go to www.perplexcity.com) and starts being the juicy, puzzly, addictive, in-game info. Can't wait Very Happy
