I think it's rather odd.
I was reading the name "Sente Marchant" and it seems decidedly feminine to me.
Where as "Sente" on its own seems male.
Hmm...thought I'd throw that in

But then, what is alpha centauri? its so far away....
Pfffft; only 4(ish) light years. That makes it our closest star after our sun. No distance at all from an astronomical P.O.V.
Tanner: I'm feeling your theory. Perhaps (to incorporate Chris K's thoughts) the whole backwards-time thing caused Sente to lose it. And did you get the idea from that episode of Star Trek TNG?
KSG: A good point that people are frequently unaware of - schizophrenia is hearing voices and isn't the same thing as multiple personality disorder.
MikeyJ: lots of us (me included) have suggested a futuristic setting. No way to really know without further information. Completist Vs Progressive, geddit?

I wouldn't like to run out of petrol half way home.

While we're guessing at who Sente is, I've got a question. Is there any reason that S. Marchant is more Sente-like than S. Ling? I tried searching before I asked this, and didn't come up with anything. I even looked at S. Ling's entry on the Wiki.

actually its quite likly that you would run out half way (almost exactly half way) home. Depending on your breaking of course.

Well assuming that I haven't miscalculated the Roche limit, I always favour aero braking. Does the job nine timesout of ten.
Edit: Of course you always run out of fuel as far away from the nearest refuel point as possible. Its a universal constant. Like E. (ducks out of way of flying maths books)

One of the finest ideas of time travel I have heard of comes from a book I believe is called 'The Man Who Folded himself'.
Assuming you accept time travel (which I don't) and you had a machine to hand:-
You jump back in time to a point in your past
You then jump forward to a future point where it is possible to have a complete gender realignment where all parts function fully.
You now jump back in time to the time in the past where you were before you jumped to the future so that now a male and female form of yourself exist in the same timespace.
You have sex with yourself, concieve child and become your own parents.
Now is that a General Euclidian Paradox or a perfect closed loop universe? Anyone?

I don't know - but I sure know that Freud would be itching to get his hands on that person!

No friction in the vacuum of space, therefore so long as you'd already picked up speed you'd continue moving at a constant velocity until you got home. Of course, if you were out of fuel it's gonna be a rough landing. And you'd have to have spectacular aim to hit something as tiny as the earth from a few light years away. Meaning that you'd need to take your foot off the accelerator a bit before half way to save fuel from the end of the trip. I'm waffling now, aren't I? Dear PM's; only you can stop this

sounds like a perfectly ordinary closed time loop to me -- nothing paradoxical
happens to me all the time

SeeJ, meant no miscredit
Could be like Asimov's Foundation with bloke reappearing every now and again to tell you he already knew that. I call him bloke cos I've forgotten his name. Nearly called him Harry Ramsden, which probably means I think with my stomach.
